I think what's so remarkable about this race was Seabiscuit's age when he ran it. He was racing horses 3 and 4 years younger than himself. Not only did he win this race, he set a track record at the same time that would stand for 10 years. THAT'S an exceptional feat. Most horses today never run much past their third year, and they don't see anywhere near the number of races Seabiscuit ran during his life.

You really must read the book Seabiscuit if you haven't already. It is superbly written. Seabiscuit's jockey, Red Pollard, and his trainer, Tom Smith, were also heroes in this story, and even his owner, Charles Howard, for putting his faith in Pollard and Smith.

Especially given Seabiscuit's age, this was an incredible feat. This was truly a special horse. The real story behind Seabiscuit is even more fascinating than the movies have shown.

Seabiscuit had the attitude to fight for the win. But I believe Tom Smith deserves all the credit for getting it out of him. Without him I doubt Seabiscuit woud have ever been heard of. Sadly, there has been numerous nameless horses who were handled badly and never got the chance to shine. I'm not saying "Sunny Jim" mishandled him,he knew he could run,but he wouldn't run. He never unlocked that door,yet the old cowboy Tom Smith knew by just looking at Seabiscuit, that he was worth the effort.

201&1 is an incredible turn of speed for a seven year old horse. Such a feat wouldn't even be attempted today. Talk about going out on top. Phenominal!

Great video to watch! My grandparents' house was about 2 miles from Santa Anita and granddad used to take my mom and aunt over to Santa Anita to watch "The Biscuit" run. I heard many stories of Seabiscuit as a kid.

Yes I did read the book,but I knew about Tom Smith before that. He later was a leading trainer,he trained Jet Pilot, who won the 1947 Kentucky Derby. His talent was pure cowboy,and he learned thru a lifetime of association with the horse. I believe he was the ultimate trainer.

I love Secretariat,he is my 2nd fav horse....Seabiscuite was/is best becoz of his big heart (great soul)......its very hard to stand back on youe feet after so much hate and damage. Seabiscuite is a model to all the underdogs that there is a 2nd chance.....never give up.)

One thing you have to look at when you compare Seabiscuit to Secretariat was that when Seabiscuit was really rolling, he was already too old to be in the Triple Crown Races. He won this race when he was seven years old which is a long time for a race horse. Secretariat only ran until he was three and had won the Triple Crown. Seabiscuit beat the Triple Crown winner of 1937 War Admiral in 1938 when Biscuit was already five. Biscuit is the greatest in my humble opinion. :)

I was an East Coast snob about Santa Anita until I went there. It is a beautiful track (despite the fact that people don't dress up), and has a magnificent statue of Seabiscuit. The view of the mountains in the backdrop is breathtaking.

i love Seabiscuit. I don't understand why he doesn't get more press in the books as such a great horse...maybe i am misinformed, but I still love him! :)

Look at the huge crowd in the grandstand ! You don't get big crowds like that anymore. Horse racing has lost alot of popularity in the last 20 years. Seabiscuit is my hero, as far as athletes go.

@veiledbrenda ultimate late bloomer to set a track record at ripe age of 7. he wasn't a freak of nature like Man o War but maybe had the same temperament. he was a different kind of horse and they didn't know how to train him in the begining. great true story.

Santa Anita Park is a beautiful place...I am going there in April as its 25 miles from home.

In the movie, Seabiscuit & Red won this race after sustaining substantial injuries and being told neither of them would ever race again. Is that true and is this that race?

437,000 in earnings in 1940 would be about 8 million today. Not bad. Now if you went through purse money over his career, with the races he won I'm sure it would total over 8 million. Probably more like 15!

Hello, from Great Britain. How right you are. We had a two year old that won 16 races in 1984, named Provideo-must have run 40 times. There was one that ran more. Unfortunately legal raceday medications have destroyed American racing, and hasn't done a lot for the Breeding industry as well.

To make a comeback from that injury is crazy

@1ktluvsu Yes, it's true. Read the book; it's fascinating not just as a story of an incredible racehorse, but it vividly captures the people and the era in which he became an icon.

In Thoroughbred Champions: Top 100 [American] Racehorses of the 20th Century, Seabiscuit is listed as #25, between Nashua & Whirlaway. Pretty good company! And he got a bestselling book 8 years ago, and his film bio got a best film Oscar nomination. Seems pretty well remembered to me. : )

@monroe444444 Neither Hillebrand's book nor the movie mention Kayak II, Charles S. Howard's Argentine import which won the '39 'Cap while Seabiscuit was out with his injury. For the '40 'Cap Howard entered both horses, declaring for Seabiscuit. Instead of a "joint entry" of today (meaning either would pay off on a bet), Santa Anita then had "declaring," meaning if both horses stood a chance of winning the jockeys were instructed to allow the declared horse to win. Which is what happened.

Race horses today could never last the campaign that horse had. They're not bred for it anymore. Shame really. Horses used to race once a week now you're lucky if they run once a month.
