Sea Trial: Bertram 31 Patriot with Twin Cummins QSB 5.9 380HP
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video we take the Bertram 31 "Patriot" for a Sea Trial. See how a 31 foot pleasure boat performs with twin Cummins QSB 5.9 380HP! Hint, it is a rocket ship! This boat was a complete restoration and it turned out beautiful, mechanically and cosmetically. Enjoy!

This is my literal dream boat. Growing up fishing in the 80s these were the holy Grail of offshore boats. I would literally only be at the dock to get fuel and bait. The canyons of NJ would be it's home port 😂
So much better than out Boards! Lord Jesus what a beauty
what a beautiful boat my god, then the repower made it better then it ever could be stock.. great work great boat !
Live the sound of the turbos !
Sweet boat, power plants, and AWESOME sound!
Awesome. Love the story telling behind the Cummins power. We love these machines because of the shared experiences and common bond of the love of boats. Keep it up.
Tony and Crew - love the videos. Keep'em coming.
Well done boys! Proud of that baby!!

back 20 years ago we did a few of these with 6BTA's . Man they were fast.
That’s a badass boat boys!
Yeah…. My favorite boat ever!… awesome!
Growing up on long island fishing out of fire island inlet the 31 and 25 were the shit
5:30 your totally hauling ass!!! Love the spooling turbos!
Looks like a fun day work.
Bad ass boat!!
Bertram The best boat on the water then and now , I'm in the middle of building one myself with cummins 5.9 12v but boosting to 500hp can't wait to be done my est 51 knot WOT. she did 34 knots with 454's stock but your wallet would be empty quickly

You do not want to install a 12 valve they are sluggish although good fuel mileage with the right delivery valves and turbo set up. A common rail is much more tunable and much more horsepower also good fuel mileage
Very nice boat and motores!!Here in the Greece the profesional boats only Cummis!!!
Got to love cummins

Awesome.
You could have stevie wonder steering in the salon and he would never know!
Knew as soon as this video was playing that it was here at the Channel Islands harbor, buddy of mine has a Bertram 31 on the opposite side facing toppers on A slip
when i was with Cummins in NSW Au, i went for an install inspection, 504 v8, the shaft was so far out of alignment the twin disc chattered, the drunken crew actually wanted to deal to me, clock dialed angle and parallel alignment , no noise
wow that`s flying, I`m guessing that`s a heavy boat
Wow 😋😉🤗💯👌
Great video. Sorry guys knots is the correct speed measurement for flybridge boats. The exception is speedboats which can be in km/h or mph. I know Bertram’s are heavy boats but I was expecting around 36-37 knots for this amount of horsepower still 34.3 knots is moving.
@SeaboardMarineIncVideos

MPH is a valid measurement of speed, sure its not conventional but we were using a phone app that displayed MPH, assuming most of you know the difference. As for expecting more speed. Most boat builders tend to over prop their boats which will gain a few MPH on the top end at the cost of long term overall performance. As the boat gains weight/equipment, the bottom becomes fouled, engines age, etc, having a more conservative prop will ensure good performance in the long run and is easier on the engines and running gear.

@@scubasteve7303 hardly a know it all… got that from the net but have been around boats all my life and I’m a traditionalist who doesn’t like things being changed for no good reason. Ships don’t use mph km/h… anyway I still love the US but don’t understand why so many turn signals on the cars there are red!!! It is dangerous and illogical especially considering you have so many of the newer cars which have amber turn signals. Anyway. Loved all my time in the US everyone is super polite. I have a 1982 28 Bertram Flybridge with twin Honda 250 outboards that goes 48MPH on the GPS.

That's awesome. Outboards certainly have some good traits. Power to weight is a definite strength. For high speed boats they are a good option.
Going to check out a Bertram 31 with twin 5.9 370hp Cummins, owner is saying fast cruise is 27knots/16gph. That sound somewhat accurate.

A friend had a 32' aluminium modified planing hull (full keel), installed Iveco 400HP. New propeller put him at 24 knots (light) cruise. Engine setting at Round 350HP.
What size props and gearing are you turning? Thanks.
One guy has to take a hit for the team and jump off the back so it hits 40mph. lol
What props were you using?
Very nice, any mods made to the hull like tunnels or ??????

No we did a few mods to the interior, but not much. The hull is pretty stock.
That thing should hit 55+knots easy with that many ponies

I think you might be thinking in terms of Gasoline engines. These diesels are heavy and this is a pretty deep V hull.
I wonder how practical it is now with almost no cockpit left to use ? But they got to 34 Knot,s !

They have a nice fly bridge. Some people much prefer to pilot their boat from up top. This is a more extreme case of that. Everyone has their own idea of the perfect boat. How boring would it be if they were all the same? At the time of this video the planned enclosure for the top was not completed.

Live well is awkward, without a doubt. Depends if they will be trolling or bottom fishing, etc.
That's great speed for that setup. Unfortunately in todays world, that's barely moving.
Hey, gentlemen, all told, including all of your restorative work, what would the asking price be for this boat? Ballpark

Is it possible to take a 6bta 250 hp Cummins and make it into a 270 or even a 315 hp 6bta? Can I just change fuel pump injectors and turbo or is there something different?
@SeaboardMarineIncVideos
5 жыл бұрын
I would ask this... Do you really want to burn that kind of fuel? to make 300HP you'll be burning 15 gal per hour. How often are you really running WOT and wishing you had just a little more top end?

The Motors are going in my 31 Bertram. I’d like at least a 26 knot cruise. I just don’t know if I’d achieve that with 220 hp?

It is possible to get more ponies, but its not cheap or simple. Just like all engines more ponies is basically More fuel, More Air and More cooling, More fuel = adjusting, possibly replacing the injection pump plus all new injectors, More Air = probably new aftercooler and larger turbo, ... More cooling = possible new raw water pump and other plumbing etc.. Probably well over 10K per motor, better off selling those and Buying some Recon's

I have a 64 bertram 38 that’s been extended 5 feet so it’s 43 foot now. It has twin cummins d903 v8 non turbo diesels.. I’d like to replace them with twin cummins 6bt engines around 350hp each.. trying to figure out the logistics to pull it off.. the 903’s are pretty tired and sluggish..

Velocity can be measured lots of ways...Next time maybe will do Kilometers per hour. Or feet per minute, which actually has some nautical engineering legitimacy when measuring prop slip. 😊
