Sea-Dweller 126600: Rolex's Most Controversial Watch

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Watchfinder & Co. reviews the controversial Rolex Sea-Dweller 126600 50th Anniversary watch. Replacing the short-lived Sea-Dweller 4000, it ups the case size to 43mm, adds a vintage-inspired line of red text to the dial and, controversially, adds the magnifying window to the crystal. We've put down our thoughts in our latest review video-what do you think? A worthy-if delayed-replacement to the 16600?

After wearing mine for a couple of days, I think 43mm is a perfect size. Especially in this day an age of big watch cases. I also really love the cyclops. It's like having a big submariner but with the exclusivity of the Sea Dweller.

I don't think I heard you mention that the bracelet is wider, and more proportional than the Deep Sea variants. That is one of the most important changes to this watch, giving it the balance that is missing in the other Deep seas. A big omission in a review, in my opinion.

It's beautiful. I've always wished the Deepsea had the magnification and was concerned that the 44mm was just a tiny bit too big. Additionally who wants people calling your watch James Cameron? I already have a 40mm Submariner LV and want something that looks a bit different and bigger and this 126600 fits the bill. I was fortunate to get it from my AD and it's such beautiful watch. The old 116600 is a sub date without a cyclop/HRV , this 126600 is a super sub, that's the difference

Another great review, as always. This model looks very sharp, but I doubt I will give it a look. While I am attached to my 43mm Supermarine and this Sea Dweller probably wears a little smaller due to the sloped bezel, I find myself drifting back to 40mm tool watches, and I don't think I am alone in this. If Rolex will put this red lettering on the Submariner, along with a red triangle around the pip, I would be all over it. They may be a little behind the curve in moving upward in size.

Fun fact: in the 1920s a car would cost around 800 USD. Adjusted for inflation, that would be about 10000 USD in 2020, almost 13 times more. This watch, today in 2020, costs about 15000 USD. One hundred years from now, if inflation rates remain the same, this watch will probably cost about 15000*13=195000 USD.

Nothing against the sub but the Dweller's fully graduated, wider bezel ring with deeper cut teeth, has an all business look. The slightly less glossy dial is also very cool. And the 2 tone? Pure braun. We'll get an ever rose soon enough but yellow gold really works with the beasty yet classy nautical vibe. A killer.

I really wonder how this wears. The classic 16600 sits just right on my wrist, but the Grand Seiko 42mm spring drive diver feels a bit too top heavy. But I can easily wear a SBBN007 Tuna. So maybe it's a matter of case design and how it sits on the wrist, not just weight? I'd try one out, but it's not like there are places that rent them out for a day.

Another impeccable review of Watchfinder. I was extremely lucky to get two of these new SeaDweller for my collection. One for my own use and the other one to keep as I believe it will be a collector’s item sooner rather than later. The watch is absolutely precise and I was surprised to realize that despite of its bigger size, when you put it on your wrist it definitely does not show. The cyclope is my main complaint about the watch as it is definitely not appropriate for a 50th anniversary of an icon that has never had a cyclope before. I also have the SD 4000 and I strongly believe that in terms of aesthetics, Rolex had reached perfection with that watch. It is a beauty and its design is so nice and harmonic that I deeply regret that Rolex had not enlarged it to 43mm and just added the red line to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the SeaDweller. It would be a masterpiece.

I was lucky enough to purchase this watch two weeks ago at my AD, being first on the waiting list. It blew me away. It's big on my 6.9in / 17.5cm wrist but not overly so, no overhang. It oozes masculinity without overdoing it. Larger case, dial (now 29mm), bezel, hour hand, bracelet. Tapered lugs and larger bracelet contribute to make it look balanced and proportionate. Now at last with the first 3235 movement in a sports model. Then there's the red lettering to make it a little bit more special. I just love everything about this watch. I paid retail for it which I generally never do and I did it gladly. Such a purposeful looking toolwatch that doesn't need fat ugly lugs nor unbearably thick and top heavy case to make it look muscular. Rolex nailed it on the head. It is the perfect sports watch to me.

I have one SD 4000 2014 and that is the one watch that I would chose to keep and use if I could have only one watch. For me, it is the perfect SD. Functional, symmetrical, elegant and discreet. A true winner. I had hoped Rolex would just add an extra line on it to mark the 50th Anniversary of this icon. Last but not least :- when you are diving you want to see clearly the hands of the watch and not the date. SD's never had magnifiers. The 50th Anniversary Edition should honnor that tradition.

Sylvio Bertoli when you’re diving you aren’t looking at the numbers on the dial, you’re looking at the time marked on the bezel & the cyclops in no way interrupts that important function. Once you get on land you still have the magnified date which is a major plus in my humble opinion.

I love this watch. I'm on the waiting list; September is the expected delivery date. I currently own the 116600. Should I trade it in, or should I really put in a safe and see what happens?

Hi. I just got a Sea-Dweller Deep Sea D Blue. Can you do a review on Ulysse Nardin Marine in stainless steel on a steel. Bracelet. That’s what I want to add next to my collection. Ernie/-

The addition of the cyclops imo is Rolex's attempt at broadening the spectrum of people who buy the Sea Dweller. Dive purists will still buy it because it's the Sea Dweller (albeit they will hold a grudge) and desk divers will buy it because it now has date functionality which makes it more than just a dive watch.

It’s a bit funny reading this knowing that as of December 2020 even the OP is ‘collectable.’ There is literally no non-‘collectable’ steel professional Rolex in existence anymore, hence the likes of the OP and even precious metal timepieces being hard to come by. That is, unless one is willing to pay for grey market.

I'm turned 40 next week and have mine wrapped up and ready to open! Having always found my partners Submariner too small, I feel this is the perfect size. Not as chunky as the Deep Sea but big enough to feel like a man's watch. Cannot wait to wear it and struggle to see how anyone couldn't like them. I can only assume they have never see one in the flesh. :-)

Love the video but don't agree on the 116600 being bland.. For me the 116600 has a more complete dial than the 16660 it has the matte black dial which harps back to the original Sea Dwellers, the ones that have now turned a brown colour over the years, and it lacks the cyclops which is a distraction for many Rolex lovers but like yourself put up with it.

Hello, I am confused why the bezels on the watches you are displaying are of a matte finish but other videos show a shiny ceramic bezel. Lighting? I owned an original Deep Sea and that bezel was shiny as well.

So exactly 3 Years on, what is the general consensus around the SD43; Did they crack it? I for one think they did. Ironic how it was such a big deal having a cyclops yet today people are loving the SD43. Many have been converted and they now proudly own and wear the 126600.

  • @robynsjp

Not convinced. Sure, it's a fantastic toolwatch, but hang on : I wear a big diver like 20 days a year max. Why should I pay like 10K ? The SuperOcean Abyss will do that job for just 2.5K. For 20 days a year, a SuperOcean is good enough for me. And I like smaller divers for casual wear, but that will not be a big SD then. More like the 16600 or 14060 ! As for cyclops, I'm not a big fan of dates on watches, so a cyclops is a definite no go for me. My Rolex ? Full black Milgauss !

Love it as an everyday watch, I put a black with red accent rubber b band that keeps the Rolex clasp, very sharp looking, comfortable, and makes it more of an everyday wear. Love the cyclopse, makes it feel like a sub on steroids, my wrist is 7.75in too and I love big watches, but this is a perfect size for me for a daily wear. When I clang it against the doorway by accident, it chips the wood molding not the other way around.
