    When it comes to doing a bigger, bolder version of their 'standard' dive watch, I think the Pelagos definitely goes the extra distance. It's everything you want in a more 'serious' watch than a Black Bay, without it just looking like a scaled up Black Bay. The Sea-Dweller will always just look like a big submariner at first glance, but the Pelagos is hard to mistake for anything other than a Pelagos.

    The Pelagos is the best pure tool watch in the world of mechanical watches, bar none (my opinion). The Rolex Sea Dweller, with its mirror-like polished accents and precious metals, is still first and foremost a luxury piece of jewelry. Apples and oranges.

    @@williamstalvey6920 To each their own. GS makes some amazing looking watches. Don't know about the diver, but there are plenty of GS watches I'd like to have in my collection. As a true purpose dive watch, I have yet to see one better the Rolex. Some may have a better depth rating, but they lack the finesse, others may be better looking, but lack the capabilities. The Sea-Dweller for me is the perfect dive watch, and the 116600 for me is the perfect Sea-Dweller. The wart like HEV on other brands (and I consider Tudor to be part of the Rolex brand, because it is) looks terrible to me.

    A year ago, when I first found this channel and watched this video, I knew that these were my two grail watches. Got the Pelagos LHD a month and a half ago and finally managed to get the SD about two weeks ago. Both watches have their own personality. Both get a lot of wrist time. But, the Pelagos has a slight edge(personal choice) because of how it wears. I love them both but for some random reason it's the Pelagos that I reach out for on a regular basis. You can't go wrong with either of them. The video doesn't do justice to how pretty the Pelagos looks, it's a beauty for quarter the price. Thanks for the video!

    If you've been considering the Pelagos, I 100% recommend it. It is absolutely gorgeous, tough as nails, and though you can't see the movement, you will appreciate the 70 hour power reserve and the less than +1 second per day that even Rolex can't beat. And nobody can accuse it of being a ripoff of (or homage to, whatever) a Submariner like the Black Bay. It really is its own watch.

  • @bloodymarvelous4790

    @bloodymarvelous4790

    2 жыл бұрын

    Since both Tudor and Rolex are made by the same company, I don't think anybody can call one a ripoff of the other. By the way, the +1 second/day falls within the range given by Tudor, which is -5/+5 seconds/day. It also falls within the range given by Rolex of -2/+2 seconds/day. Just because your watch clocks at +1s/d doesn't mean that Rolex can't match that. Tudors can also leave the factory at +4s/d, while Rolexes never will.

  • @siilentio

    @siilentio

    in case anyone is reading this, i just wanted to correct something, its -2/+4 sec per day range that a tudor manufacture calibre is allowed to run regarding the +1 secs mentioned before, you can achieve this with a ETA calibre too, its not about the quality rather than the time being spend regulating it note: doesnt mean ETA‘s are of bad quality, they are great! if it still runs +1 secs a day after many years than you got great isochronism, the more important part than running as close as possible to 0secs a day

Nevertheless I decided to go for the inhouse movement version last year. Once I've seen the watch at the AD, I got dissapointed again. Again the indices which weren't placed perfecty and by a white spot under the crystal. After waiting for a second watch, I finally bought my pelagos and didn't regret it at all. 4:38 an important difference between the two for those looking at buying, the tudor is matte all over, including dial, bezel, and the rolex is polished in most areas apart from the bracelet (bracelet sides are polished). so if you prefer low key, proper tool watch guise, go for the tudor. if you prefer a little more bling, go for the rolex. i had the tudor but it didnt do it for me, so i got the sd43, and suffice to say imo its the perfect watch for me. both watches are beasts, they will easily outlive us and take whatever we can throw at them. the tudor is insane value. wear your watches in good health.

    What I don't like about the SD43 is that the movement is still the same as the one in the 40mm version, they just beefed up the case. This left the date too close to the centre, a fact they then disguised using the cyclops, a feature Seadwellers have never had before.

    I always assumed that if and hopefully when I indulged myself in buying a luxury watch, it would be an Omega, possibly a Rolex. I could never justify such an outlay, but back in 2014 when I got engaged, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to warrant such a purchase. Well, the lady gets a nice, expensive diamond ring, why shouldn’t us guys get something too...?! I went in rather blind believing Rolex were the best of the best with their phenomenal marketing and image. As most watch enthusiasts will know, in reality they are second or even third tier compared to the truly esteemed giants like Patek Phillipe, Lange & Söhne etc. That is not to denigrate Rolex, I’d effectively be denigrating my own watch and some by doing so and Rolex is an utterly phenomenal brand with such a wide range of incredibly beautiful watches that I defy anyone not to fall in love with one. The Rolex Daytona Platinum Ice Blue is my such watch and I have no shame in admitting that is out of my price range...! Anyway, with a budget of up to around £5k I started looking and began with Omega in confidence. While many of the watches were/ are great, when it came to one that I wanted to own, wear and pay my hard cash for, nothing truly spoke to me. The Omega Seamaster garnered obvious interest, but just didn’t do it for me, despite Omega getting much critical acclaim about their wonderful Co-Axial movement. A touch despondent, I then looked at Rolex, a little reluctantly as I was put off by the admittedly subjective “look at me” stigma it would bring, but supremely confident I would fall in love with one nonetheless. Yet the more I looked, the more I was just underwhelmed and much as I love the aforementioned Daytona, even if I had that kind of money, it is a bit flash for me. The submariner range came closest to getting a bite, but just as with Omega, nothing that remotely convinced me. They were a little small, flashy/ glossy and I didn’t like the amount of text on the face. And I hate cyclops! Utterly despondent, I began browsing all ranges. A few Tag (I know...) watches looked nice, but ultimately meh, then when all hope was lost, something called a Tudor Pelagos leapt out of the screen. I’d never even heard of Tudor... a little research and I soon learned what we all know, in very crude terms Tudor is effectively made by Rolex at affordable prices, but in real terms that does a complete disservice to the rich heritage and individuality of Tudor in its own right. I loved that it was largely Rolex quality, but without the albeit subjective stigma’s that come with a Rolex. I loved that it looked like a submariner, but without the glossy, flashy elements. I loved that clean face/ dial with minimal, plain text as opposed to the cluttered, confusing dial of Rolex. The matt finish of the bezel and face made it majestically understated and wonderfully legible. The lume was resplendent, the clasp with its micro adjustments ingenious. The rubber strap included (though given the bracelets ingenuousness I have worn that almost exclusively). The snowflake hands, which after some research is a nod to the historical Tudor submariners that were provided to the French navy in the 1960’s, sums up much of the wonderful contradictions of the Pelagos; a contemporary, modern watch, yet with classic, historical connotations. And I simply adored that it was brushed titanium rather than shiny steel, a big preference for me. Oh, and it didn’t have cyclops!!! It just flew under the radar which I loved and was a watch you wouldn’t be frightened to wear, a proper tool watch. If ever a watch was made for James Bomd, this was/ is it ;-) After more research than is probably healthy ;-) I looked in to the movement which of course is a massive thing for watch enthusiasts, probably the biggest thing for most and of course the (original) Pelagos has an ETA 2824 movement (albeit a high quality one with Tudor enhancements) rather than an in-house movement. Now I understand my conclusions will be an anathema to those that believe a luxury watch simply must have an in-house movement, but given there was little real world benefit as the Pelagos comfortably runs within chronometer specifications and some, I regarded it unimportant. It would be easier and cheaper to service and though investment potential was and is irrelevant to me, hindsight, whilst still currently subjective of course, indicates the original ETA Pelagos will be more of a collectible that the in-house 5 liner Pelagos given the original 2 liner was only manufactured for 3 years. It is also the first titanium watch made by either Tudor or Rolex. There is precedent of ETA watches, even for Rolex (technically a Valjoux as they were purchased by ETA in 1966) being more collectible than in-house versions. So as you can probably guess, I bought the Tudor Pelagos and am absolutely delighted with it. Over 5 years later it is losing 1.9 seconds a day (this changes in the summer to around the same but gaining). The 5 liner is a beautiful watch too, I love the blue version, yet as per my stated enthusiasm for understated, non-flashy watches, I admire it yet wouldn’t want it. And I certainly prefer the 2 liner to the 5 as to me the original Pelagos is noticeably different to any Rolex which was a great allure for me, the 5 liner and the lines, pardon the pun, become more blurred. The loss of the marker at 3 is another negative on the new version, but which ever version you have, the Pelagos is amazing. I’ve never quite understood why the Pelagos doesn’t garner far more acclaim, even playing second fiddle to the Tudor Black Bay, albeit a fine, wonderful watch in its own right. Maybe one day it will be remembered as it deserves to be, but in the mean time I will enjoy wearing it and admire its understated majesty every single day.

    It's quite strange to me that my Pelagos LHD doesn't feel as light as a Titanium watch. And the bracelet is very rough, and uncomfortable for me, so I changed it with its original rubber band, it feels good now. Overall, it's a very good watch.

    If you dive, A dive computer is best with a Frogman as your backup . But if you need a backup backup the Pelagos is a better backup backup watch than the SD............you will agree with me when you take your expensive SD down and it starts banging against your tanks , regulators , D-rings of your BC , and dive boat ladders.

    Selling my Pelagos as the Titanium is a pro and a con. I love the dark hue and unique finish it has yet it is such a scratch magnet! You aren't really scratching the titanium though yet the oxidised layer which looks worse than a scratch on steel as the colour of the scratch is much brighter. Great watch in EVERY other regard though yet I really must part with the titanium and stick with my steel pieces.

    I own a Blue Pelagos. RHD. A fantastic piece. Great VFM too. I still prefer my 2500D Omega Planet Ocean though. As for the Rolex, not really my thing.

    This channel has changed my mind about Rolex. I've always written them off as a piece of gaudy jewellery, worn by people who know nothing of watches, as part of a uniform of success. Whilst that is often true, I've come to appreciate the clean, simple and precise execution that defines them.

    Ya know....Rolexes are many things, but gaudy they are not. That's just a misperception based on the fact that some people that buy/wear them may do so ostentatiously - but the watches themselves are quite understated compared to other Swiss marques.
