SDR PLAY Spectrum Analyzer by Steve Andrews

This is a great tool for checking out filters and other devices using a noise generator as a source. Perfect for the experimenter.

Helpful video. I have a RSP1A at home and I will definitely buy one of those Noise Generators to play with, as a starting RF and Radio amateur. I have seen that this program could also use a external tracking generator, but I need to put time in it to find out if it would be even possible and how. One of the software buttons on the GUI says Tracking Generator. But this handy "trick" with White Noise source is very handy. Maybe you can also try to "normalize" the source to the SA to get more accurate readings of the filters.

The RSP Spectrum Analyzer software also has (4) markers with delta functions which can be used for accurate frequency and amplitude measurements between marker positions. So by using the delta markers, no need to do the math and you get very accurate measurements. In the download, there is a well written user manual for the software which explains the markers and their use along with a few other handy features.

Hi Darrell, Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I saw the markers but didn't read enough of the manual. I was too excited about the program itself and how ell it worked. This is a very useful tool. Thank you for the comments Paul W1VLF

Great video as usual! I think it would be safe to put some attenuator in front of rsp, to avoid damaging it with too high signal level...

@@W1VLF Good to know, I've heard, that for example tinysa or tinyvna are easy to destroy that way. Original RSP's have some serious filtering at input, so using them in that way should be safer. How much of attenuation did you used?

Hey Paul! Great video. I've been looking at the RSPDX for a while now and that software looks great. I have some older XP machines... wonder if the software will play on those older machine?. An excellent alternate to an expensive SA with tracking generator. Glenn W2BX

Hey Glen... Yes.. the DX is a great receiver and it doubles as a nice spectrum analyzer. Don't know about older machines maybe some else in the group does. W1VLF

Yes, this program will run under Windows XP so long as the machine has at minimum USB 2.0. Will not work with the older USB 1.1. I've used this system with Win Xp but it really shines with Win 7+.

To me, it sounds a lot like a data control channel for Public Service radio systems. Some are continuously running, and others popup on as as-needed basis. I'd sugest looking in the 800 MHz bands and you may find similar modulation.

Hi Ernest.. Most any of the modules listed on eBay will work fine down to a few KHz.. Here is the one that I have..www.ebay.com/itm/114065473540?hash=item1a8ed50004:g:Z0oAAOSw3R5gLhhP&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4IuBeNURLT0qZHfKnqm5wVbTsXqX68MCIIqYsMID5XaLvEBwDBuRYsbyUxyglbZgIo7F%2BPiKI%2BtTHOVs6qSeG4ah6smTZfadFib2vzQYAFAkhu%2FGeaJvpGiX%2ByCxoREgkO3s5JcebIVHptjtyO%2BfCvLNFBG6SB4nK7FnNovfQcdBgpaZPrzt7dxYdUHEwWsw7p3MDyc9KnRfdBOu8KmKax6DUoz6hKXCvrRilGwZSQUYajn0ncFlIROBgy3bajMdpWkyAXKFNurkgqGz0%2FIpgyrqaVnwvxQioS14TbqRr%2Feu%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR8re2oKlYw

Forgot to mention - This program appears to be abandonware now because it hasn't been updated since 2020 and nothing has been heard from the author. BUT, such is okay because the last release is very stable and has all needed features :).
