Thanks Steve. My Rework station has a pickup tool, but I rarely use it. I just peel the plastic back for what I need, dump them on the table, and then use tweezers to place them. That tool would be good for someone building multiple boards. Arts & Crafts have wax tipped pencils, as well as other types, to pick up tiny objects.

I normally just tip them out, but for things like LEDs, it's a pain to maintain the correct polarity.

For small components like resistors, a smaller diameter needle may work better, and provide better visibility for positioning the part on the board. I've built a vacuum pickup tool from a nebulizer I purchased from a thrift store. It worked well but was noisy. My current version uses a diaphragm pump salvaged from an old hospital-type blood pressure monitor. It had a solenoid pressure dump value that was rated for vacuum as well. It's connected so it connects the handle to atmosphere to dump the vacuum and release the part instantly when a foot pedal is pressed. This closes the suction to the diaphragm pump, but only for the brief time needed to release the part. This brief period of a shut off suction to the pump has caused it no harm. When the foot pedal hasn't been pressed for a period of time, the pump shuts off via microcontroller control and turns on again when when the pedal is pressed. One final feature is a big toggle switch to switch the foot pedal to control my solder paste dispenser.

Regulator is faulty, it has a leaking diaphragm or the actual needle valve in it is not sealing properly. There should be no air leaking out of the diaphragm vent in normal operation. just make sure your valve is capable of vacuum operation, ie it has a direct acting piston opening and closing the port, as valves with pilot operation use the incoming air to drive a shuttle valve to do the switching. yours does look like it is direct acting, suitable for vacuum work. With the diaphragm pump I would also add in the vacuum accumulator, and a vacuum switch ( easiest is a refrigerant low pressure switch, as it is adjustable and will work down to a vacuum) or a pressure transducer to control the pump. Keep the volume from the valve to the tip of the tool as small as possible, to get the fastest response from it, and get a small 1/8 silencer for the port of the valve you use to depressurise the tool path, so that you do not suck dirt back into the filter as the valve releases.

Unfortunately there's apparently a few revisions of the FB because I have 2 here and neither had the opamp located where everyone shows lol. Can't find any info on this exact revisions

How much maximum pressure does that membrane pump provide?

How small can the nozzle tip be? Also, do you think a switch / button on the hand piece would be more convenient?

The nozzle can be any diameter really, you will maybe need a more powerful vacuum source for smaller nozzles though. I wanted to avoid any hand movement on the handpiece, just to decouple the action of releasing the component from placing the component.

At some point I think I saw a video on youtube where someone had re-purposed a fridge compressor to act as a vacuum pump and it was pretty silent.

why not just bore out the hole on the pickup pencil so that it allows more air in to offset the vacuume when you release your finger?

I could, but when placing small components I want to avoid any finger movement on the pencil as it will affect fine placement.

@@sdgelectronics I guess you could just adjust the vacuum for the larger/smaller parts. So you had these parts for two years and purchased other parts forgetting you had them. Goodness Steve, we are brothers. I do the same thing. Now that I am retired I have more time for my things to do. Good YT channel mister.
