I am also curious if anyone has made an adapter yet that fits flush into the side and holds the smaller micro SD cards, like the old transcend cards. (Or is there even enough depth to put an adapter in so that it fits flush?). Anyway, thanks! I will probably get myself an SD card then.

Yes. The model you're looking for is called the "BaseQi 420AG" which is a brushed aluminum MicroSD adapter that sits flush with your MacBook. I was really hoping that the M1 Max MacBooks would have SD Express support to allow for a mini slot in SSD style expansion, but I guess it's not to be. Still, I'm happy with the 420AG as is - I've thrown in a 400GB Samsung MicroSD and now have a nice lil' chunk of extra local storage to dump files on to in a pinch.

Can we use the micro or low profile micro SD card which is half the size? Like we used to use on earlier MacBooks?

Just Got 512GB Transcend JetDrive it Sits in Flush with the SD slot look it up.

nice one , I went for the 1TB , looks very nice but the speed is disapointing , is still good for additional storage compared to Apple prices
