Sculpting with Air Dry Clay: Tips and Materials

Sculpting a "Potplant Creature" in AIR DRYING CLAY.
For this project I will be using AIR DRY clay as my primary medium, build around a ALUMINUM armature. After sculpting, the clay need to air dry for 4-5 days before its ready for painting. It DOES NOT need to be fired or molded.
MATERIALS and TOOLS used, and where you can get them:
AIR DRY CLAY:
in this video I used PEBEO air dry clay amzn.to/3goSgFu.
Though, per 2022 my new favorite is DAS which you cant find here: amzn.to/3rgW1TB)
ARMATURE:
Aluminium Mire (gauge 10 / 3.2mm diameter) - amzn.to/3oivPGh
Aluminium Wire (gauge 6 / 4.9mm diameter) - amzn.to/34qcX0Q
Aluminium Wire Mesh - amzn.to/3okXfev
PLYERS
STEEL KNEAD IT - amzn.to/34AwZFZ
(Or other epoxy putty - eg. amzn.to/3Gt1CKK)
WOODEN BASE
BALL BEARINGS (or marbles) - for eyes (eg. amzn.to/330479Y)
Variety of SCULPTING TOOLS, eg:
Stainless Steel Sculpting Tools - amzn.to/3gfE6GD
Loop Tools - amzn.to/34rUHnL
Silicone tip / dotting tools - amzn.to/34sQe4w

Sometimes it can crack when it’s drying. And from my personal experience if depending on how thick the clay is you can put a wet paper towel over it (after it’s wrung out) for a couple days

You can touch up the cracks with more clay and it's really easy to blend out

  • @SofiaBue

    @SofiaBue

    2 жыл бұрын

Both NeonEli and Tony are right :) You can slow down the drying process (preventing cracks) by draping a damp paper towel, or simply a loose piece of plastic overtop whilst leaving it to dry. The plastic sheet will keep some of the condensation in, making it dry slower and more 'stable'. Should small crack start to form they can be repaired with fresh clay. The sooner you notice any cracks the easier it is to fix them (before the sculpture is fully dry).
