    Quick tip to add to this. When you sculpt a palm, your fingers are suppose to look shorter on palm side of your hand. This is because there is a slanted plane that starts in between the knuckles and stops at the end of the webbing in between your fingers. You can notice this plane alot more if you slightly bend your fingers forward and apart stiffly and can actually feel it really well with your other hand.

    I need to give this a go, ive been struggling with 3D sculpting for years, I find it hard to make subtle changes without having a physical piece of clay in front of me. From watching this Ive realised that I often will have too high a strength on brush and go too far with pushing and pulling the forms.

  • @artofjhill

    Yea do give it a go. Digital sculpting is fun once you get the hang of it. Definitely go low on intensities especially if you want more control. I know artist that use 3-4 intensity. I use 12. Also pressure sensitive so I’m often using a soft touch

    Hey J, What do you think about the 3D scans? I been seeing a lot of posts from 3D scan store and its crazy the level of detail they can get with scans right now! Do you think this is will be a problem for 3D sculptors in the future?

  • @artofjhill

    @artofjhill

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey. 3D scans already is replacing lots of work that would've been made by an artist. There will always be art to and jobs for artists though. Movies are done with photography and there are lots of artists on that. Pixar keeps making beautifully hand made stuff etc. So I wouldn't ever stop learning and improving hand made techniques unless you wanted to focus on the 3D scan workflow which will also always be useful for different productions.

    Great video demonstration, and excellent work. I thought it was a cool theme--the connection of young and old reaching out literally and as down through time. It is somewhat reminiscent of Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling fresco depicting the hands of God and Adam. You described your process and motivations very clearly in an impressive flow of commentary. I'm curious how you would approach hands intended for animation and rigging, as compared to a static design, particularly how modeling skin would work. Obviously, skin stretches over joints and bunches up into folds as things move around, so I'm wondering how to model for realistic skin behavior. Thanks for posting such and informative tutorial.

  • @artofjhill

    @artofjhill

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the nice comment. For CG hands to behave as you describe, they would need to be built with good topology for animation then be rigged with a skeleton model and tendons in the hand and the skin would be simulated to physically slide around. Maybe also multiple displacement textures to show the wrinkles compressing and such while animating. That would be the highest end way to author a cg hand and would only happen if it was in a big budget film and was in close up. At that point, you'd just film a real hand though :p

  • @marshallross3373

    @marshallross3373

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@artofjhill "...just film a real hand though"... LOL...good point. Although, recently the fidelity has improved so much in CG and in games that we can't be too far of from truly hyper-realism of this sort. Also, that's interesting about multiple displacement textures. I guess you'd have to create at least 2 or more keyframe-like maps and blend between them. And as for the skin and tendon simulations, I've seen some videos of Ziva. Probably could be applied to hands, but like you said, would it be worth the effort? Anyway, thanks for the demo. Cheers!

    I am trying to re sculpt on my hands/fingers to a model that I got from a Styku scan. It's REALLY difficult because I have no idea about masking or cutting or anything....all I know is clay build up brush and move brush, and how to smooth. Yeaah.
