Scuba Diving The TANGALOOMA WRECKS Of Moreton Island 🇦🇺

Спорт

Scuba diving the Tangalooma Wrecks of Moreton Island!
In this episode, Holly and Mark are on Sunreef's staff day out to go scuba dive the Tangalooma wrecks off Moreton Island.
As a thank you for all the hard work during whale season. The management at Sunreef are taking all the staff down to Moreton Island on Whale One for some scuba diving, freediving, BBQs and fun!
Dive site:
Tangalooma wrecks
Histroy:
Located just north of the Tangalooma Island Resort are the Tangalooma Wrecks, a cluster of ships scuttled by the Queensland Government between 1963 and 1984 to provide safe anchorage spot for recreational boat owners on the eastern side of Moreton Bay.
Coral is now starting to form in and around the wrecks, providing a haven for over 100 species of fish and sometimes even dolphins, wobbegongs and dugongs.
A total of 15 vessels were sunk - five in 1963; five in the 1970's; and a further five in the 1980's.

Wow - crazy to see so many wrecks put together to help form a barrier. Very cool! That current reminds me of the ones we deal with here in the river.

@@BlueHorizonDiving I dive along the St. Clair River in Michigan. Some dives can be much more challenging than others. Current and freighters can push you around a bit! 😆

@@lydialeigh4 I remember it was Michigan, just wasn't sure what rivers. Love the freighters pushing you about, do you really feel them coming over?

@@BlueHorizonDiving You hear them well before you feel them - and they are loud under water. Some say it sounds like a heart beat. I say it’s more like a slow drum beat. Now I think its cool to hear them coming, but the first few times were a little unnerving. I would crawl closer to the sea wall because it sounded like they were going to pass right over me. 😳😄 Dug up a bottle from the mid 1800’s there too. If you check out Marine City Webcam, you’ll be able to see one of the places along the river where we jump in. Just a few feet from the lighthouse! 🤙

Hahaha! Everyone gets caught out by the current around the wrecks! It’s so deceiving. You can only really dive or snorkel on the slack tide if you want to make it back to your boat to the beach.

Hahaha, true. We knew the current would be flowing due to tide times there but was surprised that it can have a decent strength compared to other areas nearby.

I was snorkelling there 10 years ago and didn't notice any current at all and I swam a long distance back to the boat with 5year old on my back so I can't say it was a rough area what so ever.
