The Scrubba Wash Bag is an innovative piece of travel gear designed to give you “clean clothes anywhere,” and who doesn’t want that? Cleaning your clothes is something every long-term traveler in the world has to deal with, so a product that claims to make that easier is definitely worth checking out.
In testing, we found that it does take a little while to master the washing process, but it’s straightforward and simple enough for anyone to get the hang of eventually. And we’re happy to report that the Scrubba Wash Bag does deliver on its promise of “clean clothes anywhere.”
Washing your clothes is always a nuisance, regardless of how you do it. While it is a pain that the Scrubba can only wash a certain amount of clothes at one time, and it’s not perfect for bulkier items, we’ve been impressed with its packability, durability, and benefits over alternative washing methods. If you struggle to find a laundromat on the road or you’re tired of washing your clothes in a sink, the Scrubba Wash Bag is a simple and impressively practical solution.

How do you wash your clothes while traveling?

  • @GlobalAdventurer

In the bathroom sink. It's cheaper and more effective in my opinion. And you can always simply use some of those cheap elbow length playtex rubber gloves so you don't have to touch the soapy water. The key to removing dirt by hand is moving the clothes back and forth forcefully through the water, forcing the soapy water through the clothing. Scrubbing isn't usually necessary unless there's a major stain. That's how washing machines clean.... forcing water through the fabric. I actually learned this many years ago from a couple from France when I was staying in a hostel 😀 On edit: Wearing stain resistant or nylon/polyester clothing helps out a lot too when it comes to washing clothing too. Thank you for your video!

I use the Scrubba bag for about 6 years now. Sinks in some places can be really dirty. And this allows me to soak my clothes for a few hours if needed and just have it in a corner of the room. The cleaning staff can then do their job without being bothered. It saved me when I was in a place with any sink in the country side. Doubles as a dirty laundry bag between hotels too. Tips: 1. leave your dirty clothes at least an hour with the laundry soap before doing the first wash. 2. I place the bag on the floor and just use my foot to scrub. Less tiring and more effective

What's the best way to dry the cloth?

  • @CO-kd6sd
    @CO-kd6sd5 жыл бұрын

Noooo. Don't overpay for this thing. You can get a bigger capacity (if you want) and better quality dry bag for a lot less. That valve has the potential to break, which has happened with previous versions, and nobody has time to be dealing with that on their travels. The nubs don't make that much of a difference and if whatever your washing is really soiled, you'll want to let it soak before washing. Also, if you're going to be rearranging the items so all areas make contact with the nubs and wringing out your clothes anyway, there shouldn't be a problem with agitating them by hand beforehand. Here's how I wash: 1. Fill dry bag with warm water and put soap in 2. Put clothes in and agitate by hand for a minute or two 3. Close bag and slosh around for a couple of seconds 4. Drain water and rinse Clean. No valves necessary. No window needed. Get a proper dry bag from a company like Sea to Summit (who have a better warranty) and save yourself some money. They'll have different colors and capacities to choose from to better suit your needs. Lastly, if you're washing your clothes away from a bathroom space, please use sustainable detergent!! There are so many videos out there of people demonstrating the Scrubba and other bags and they are contaminating waterways and other areas. Don't be that person.

All great points, Co Co. Bummer the valve broke-we haven't had this happen (fingers crossed it doesn't). But always good to keep an eye on while testing! We'll have to try out some other dry bags for washing, too. 👍 -Hannah

I actually have a Sea-to-Summit drybag I've used in the same capacity, and I'd recommend the Scrubba over it. Most drybags (including the aforementioned) are quite a bit thinner, which is understandable, and rely on a wafer of coating to maintain waterproofing. The Scrubba's layer of plastic is significantly thicker. I suspect that's because while a regular dry bag is only designed to keep water out and air in, the Scrubba is designed to keep water in and air out. Since water is significantly heavier, the outward pressure of carrying a bag around with water is higher. I also think the valve on the Scrubba, the window on the side, and the nubs are small but useful upgrades. If the valve breaks, the valve breaks. Just my opinion.

I am not disparaging the Scrubba... I've seen it work and it works well. So I pulled out my dry bag that I use for kayaking, went to the Dollar Tree and bought four rubbery/plastic spiked dryer balls for $1.25 U.S. plus tax. I put the balls in the bag with a SMALL amount of powdered detergent (and if you want to save space, use two and not four), and use them to press and scrub into the clothes I added as I agitated and massaged them into the clothing. I shook the bag vigorously in between (as my old hands get tired of working so hard) and repeat the process for 10-15 minutes, dump the water and rinse thoroughly using the same process. If you buy a new dry bag at a local (big box) U.S. retailer at the time of this comment, it will cost $14 (for a large one) plus tax. All in, for me it was a $17 solution to a $55 bag on our favorite online store. My version packs to near nothing (OK, about like a 2 liter bottle if you are using a large bag), and I keep it in my truck when I car camp. I was recently in a tornado ravaged area and had to help family and friends without running water and electricity (though there was a lot of fresh water in containers being brought in). I was able to clean a few loads using about 2 gallons of water per small load (1 gallon to wash, 1 to rinse) for our group to everyone's relief and great satisfaction. I'd think having about 3-4 gallons per load for two people (split evenly between washing and rinsing) would be perfect. I can wash daily laundry for two in one round if it's not large, bulky or winter laundry. In summer conditions, I can wash laundry for three, maybe four, depending on their size and the clothes they wear (I like using this method on synthetic fabrics -- think performance, moisture wicking Ts and nylon or polyester shorts or pants --as they repel water and weigh less, are less bulky overall, and they dry faster).

Brought mine with me for a two-week trip to Europe. I did have access to washing machines at some points, but this just made it so much more convenient. The only kicker is making sure you extract as much water as possible, since it's not being extracted by a washing machine. Hotel room towels work well. If you're changing hotels often, you need to plan accordingly so things have adequate time to dry.

This was a very helpful review, thank you! I was full-time in an RV for four years, so I’ve got this bag, but most of the places I stay at in the Thousand Trails campgrounds have a laundromat on site. But my old dog just started leaking, so he’s wearing doggy diapers now and this is absolutely perfect for him so he has fresh diapers all the time. I also forgot to close the valve, L O L. I use the towel underneath it as I’m scrubbing, and then I use the same towel to ring out the clothes later. So that works well. I’m glad I got this. And thanks again for your review. Safe travels!

With regard to getting clothes dry after using the sack I beleive the portable clothes dryer has already been invented in the form of portable washing lines. A stretchy cord with hooks either end. While camping I always take string (also handy for extra guy ropes, during high winds) & pegs. Its usually possible to fix up a line. If not I use the pegs to hang small items on the guy ropes. You can get portable lines that do not require pegs as they are double & you can pull corners of the cloth between the twisted lines. But pegs are jolly useful for a lot of things. I often have one or two in my handbag. Useful for closing that bag of nuts, pegging a note to something, holding the tongue of your shoe in place while you slip your foot in, pegging babies toy to something so it dosen't get lost. Pegging papers you need for some transaction together, holding receipts, stamps etc. Stopping your sunhat from blowing away, pegging a garment at the throat to keep a cold wind out, gatering a too large hood so it dosen't fall over your eyes etc etc.

@@PackHacker I usually have two in my handbag. If I was camping in a place such things are not provided & I was travelling in a vehicle I would probably take about twelve, but if I had to carry everything it would probably be about five. Also it is not always necessary to wash the whole garment if an item is not really dirty but just needs refreshing. Sometimes it is possible just to wash the armpits & neckline of a teeshirt for example. As well as needing less water, it will dry quicker as the water from the wet patches spreads out across the entire garment.

Alright. I bought a dry bag to test this. I washed 5 pairs of socks. I scrubbed for way more than 3 minutes. I used fabric softener too so they would come out nice and soft. After drying, the socks were "crunchy" under the toes and heel which means that this wasn't enough to completely wash off the sweat. I also did something like 5 rinses. It still wasn't enough to get rid of all the hair and lint from the water. I had to rinse off the socks individually in the end. I highly doubt that having the little knobs in there would have made a difference. I might as well have used the dry bag as a basin and washed the socks by hand. They probably would have come out cleaner.

If your tap won't run hot to the point where it is a little uncomfortable for your hands, then you may need to add water from a kettle to your basin. I wouldn't pour just boiled water direct onto clothes though, it could cause the dye to come out, or even shrink delicate fabrics. Then you move the cloth around & squeeze in such a way as to force the water through the marked area, repeatedly. For heavily marked items you may need to resoap & repeat this process several times. I have managed to clean items that have had cooking oil spilt on them like this. If you want to remove black tarry oil, as sometimes found on beaches, out of clothing then you need to start by dissolving the mark using a lighter type of oil. I have used essential oil of Lavender on small marks. If you want to get black tarry oil from the beach off of inflatable water toys etc I have found margerine very helpful for softening the tar. A little fine sand in margerine may enable you to remove stubborn spots by rubbing.

I soak everything overnight or when out during the day to get my washing done. after soaking I wash with cold power liquid soap powder and rinse with conditioner. its all about time management.

It will. I have the old version that I bought December 2016. The updated twist knob is much better. I travel internationally about 3 weeks a year. Even though I paid $50 for it, it has more than paid for itself in convenience. It's much faster to wash 2 outfits in this, squeeze them out and hang them to dry in my hotel room than it is to wash each item in the sink or bath tub. Plus it saves my back and I don't have to find a laundry mat in a country where I can't speak the language. I've recommended it to friends, family and people I meet in my tour groups.

  • @Commentator541

I like everything about it, but at 50$ it doesn't make sense. Laundromat is 1-2 dollars in most cities and you can fit a lot of clothes in there. It's a great idea, perfectly executed, but this can not cost over 35$, although ideally it would be priced somewhere in between 20-30.

Hey Commentator541 - thanks for sharing your thoughts here! Yes, if you're traveling to cities, the Scrubba does not seem as necessary and you can opt to save space in your pack. I've been using the Scrubba for about 5 years, mostly on Canadian fly-in fishing trips where weight is an issue, so as few clothes as practical are packed. No problems with the Scrubba, but it has had a lot of use and is showing it's age. I will replace it as it's invaluable not only to me but also to my fishing pals olfactory senses. :-)

I have owned a Scrubba for several years and have taken it on many trips. I like it because sinks in hotels or hostels are sometimes either too small, have no plug, or are not really clean so they would not work well for hand washing clothes. I prefer to do my own laundry for many reasons, including reducing costs, not losing items when you send them out for a wash, and not knowing what sort of chemicals/soaps/or dirty water your clothing is exposed to at a laundry service (trust me, I've seen how stuff gets washed in a bunch of places...pretty dodgy). I'd recommend using Scrubba in the tub or shower in case you spring a leak (mine hasn't, but it's possible to forget to close the valve or not fold the top tightly enough). Pro tip: you can use your foot to agitate the Scrubba while you're in the shower! Then you can rinse and dry yourself and your clothes at the same time. :) Yes it's a pricey gadget, so perhaps not worth it for everybody, but I travel a lot and always bring my Scrubba so it's paid me back in savings on laundry services. For a cheaper option, you could do the same with a mid-weight dry bag without the scrubbing nubs.

I have the older model with a floatie-style valve. I'm also not sure mine shows water levels for amounts of clothes. I'd definitely say you have to be conservative with how much you load in it. I have, sometimes, washed soiled clothes and after drying them, realized they still weren't clean. Re-washing those items in smaller batches with more soaking helped. I also found it productive, if you have enough body strength, to actually shake the Scrubba instead of massage it. It seems to work faster and more effectively. Overall I'm mostly happy with the Scrubba, but not as happy as I'd be just using wash-and-fold dropoff laundry, which most of the world has. But insofar as I've chosen to use it, and I've used it with limited loads, it's worked well. YMMV.
