For all those who upsettedly say this is a departure from "Scrooge"/"Christmas Carol" (and I agree it is to a certain extent in one particular way). But, first, how many of you have seen the 1970 version named Scrooge with Albert Finney (a fine British actor) where the unrepentant miser actually goes to hell? This story's just telling you how he got there. It wasn't directly because of his lack of kindness but because he had no savior who could deliver him from his sin and the prospect of going to hell. And he was so wretched bcz he had no hope (only money which is nice, but it doesn't do you any good in the very end). He also had no love or concern for others, just lots of Greed. And, even though you may have heard it 1000 times, the message of truth never changes: Jesus is the only way to heaven. For no other God has risen from the dead. Afterall, he went to His death, a horrible & violent one, to pay for the sins of the world, saving those who will or now do believe, i.e., put their trust in Him, and not in themselves, before they die, to be saved. Good works mean nothing unless they come from a believer in Jesus Christ, because it's not the works that save. Only the precious blood of Christ will save your soul and keep you from facing judgement. Everyone sins, but Jesus forgives, if only you turn to Him.

This is just as bad as my nephew’s school rendition of A Christmas Carol. In that version, Cratchit gets paid $15/hr in 1843 ($1.4 million/yr today), key scenes are omitted, Scrooge knows he’s dead prior to going to the grave and the Ghost of Christmas yet to Come has a speaking role.

Jesus truly IS the reason for the season. So thanks, ziel online. I've never seen this before. I was looking for various airings of the many adaptions of Dickens' Christmas Carol and/or Scrooge which aren't all that easy to find. Wasn't expecting this. And I believe it makes a point about denying God!! Not a good idea. He loves us but He hates sin. It hurts Him AND it hurts others and if not right away, then, later, it'll hurt us, ourselves.Yet He forgives it thru His Son and the cross. A great reason for one to want Jesus Christ & His forgiveness in their life. Btw, I like the woman's voice who narrated. Sounds a bit familiar.

Separation of church and state which was the creation of both Thomas Jefferson and the churches, as part of the freedom of religion act was created because of religious persecution . In England at that time the government enforced a single religion on the people and refused it's people the right to worship as he/she chose. To prevent the US government from doing the same, the freedom of religion act was created along with separation of church from state. Meaning ...every man or woman would have the right to worship as they saw fit "WITHOUT GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE " provided that religion followed the Constitution and the Bill of Rights..in short....THE LAWS OF THE LAND. It was not created to prevent religious practice in the public square..It was made to protect that right!

@@epaddon yeah it was because both Marley and Scrooge cared for money and didn't care for love, kindness or generosity.... Scrooge here.... What the Hell is this ????! I get why one should want to celebrate Christmas or anything else without government's interference or without having problems but in the original Scrooge hated Christmas because he thought it was a loss of time and money , he was a man of worldly mind, a materialist.. He deeply wanted love but he was a flawed man and couldn't see how his clerk or his nephew loved him. Yet when he saw their love and he saw how he could save Tiny Tim from his ugly fate and bring happiness he did it !!!! He made his peace with God and tried and managed to be a better man, he found Salvation... Scrooge here is a religion hater , a man who hates Christianity so much he fights to end a celebration of love and kindness for ever and uses something which was meant to help people in his blind rage .... So yeah a total perversion of Dickens'play and an insult to both Christianity and atheism... Scrooge here finds religion and kindness but he seriously misses the whole point ....

On the contrary, Dickens WOULD like to have seen references to how social injustices, poor people, health/hospital care, education had improved in the 20th century. Dickens was never opposed to Jesus or Christianity, but only 'organized religion which sought to interpret the Bible's words many times to its own advantage (as discussed with the Ghost of Christmas Present). Several ideas dealt with by Dickens in his novels are also dealt with here in this adaptation.

@ziel online - You may not realize this, but that trite cliche, "Jesus is the reason for the season", is in error. It would be December 25th whether or not Jesus was born or not. It would still be cold and snowy in the Rocky Mountains, hot and dry in the Sahara Desert, and sultry and steaming in Indonesia whether Jesus existed or not. The Winter Solstice would make the season notable, if for no other reason. And how could Jesus have been born on December 25th if shepherds were tending their flocks and lambs?

The word Christmas comes from the birth of Christ, hence CHRISTmas. And no one believes that the very first Christmas was necessarily on Dec. 25. In fact, there's a one-hour docu/program that, if I recall, is entitled "The Star of Bethlehem" (I haven't seen it in a while) that stands straight up with science and is quite informative of the real first Christmas researching the very star that is totally backed-up with proof. The details that are found through very old astrological charts, tables, records, and some very driven star-studying taken on by a man who happens to be a lawyer, just about a decade or so ago, show some very compelling evidence of the very star and all the many surprising data that connects with/onto the written Word of God, i.e., the Bible in almost unbelievable ways. It's most convincing to just about anyone, even the skeptics.

Hell , I am an atheist but I love Jesus' teachings, to love thy neighbor and to try and be kind to every single person no matter their sexuality, creed or homeland... Christians have committed some truly terrible crimes like Crusades or slavery but this is just some believers who say that they are Christians but they give to this faith and these teachings a really bad name !!!! This movie for me gets some facts wrong about both Christianity and atheism.... I don't believe in God but I won't try to stop Christmas or even try to destroy a Christian place of belief !!!! Faith is not a gift I have managed to give myself yet but I've seen some truly beautiful Christians or Buddhists or even Muslims .... Everyone can believe in everything or in nothing as long as they show respect to other people who find strength, love or spiritual help in faith or in science... Maybe when we finally learn to do this this world will be a better place..... OMGosh!! I'm a retired film and TV critic and I'm glad I am. I'm no longer being paid to watch rubbish like this so I stopped at 11:27. My First Law of Film Reviewing is: Bad films don't get better if they are still bad at 10 minutes. This one, I can promise you, will not get better. Pity, I kind of liked Dean Jones but in straight roles, he never quite pulled comedy off convincingly. The person bringing the law suit against the writer, producers and director of this film should be Charles Dickens, sadly, he not being with us, perhaps his Estate could move to have this version (possibly the worst of the 135 versions [I kid you not]) struck from the record forever. Why oh, why are Scrooge and Marley lawyers? Dickens chose Scrooge's profession as money lender and his grasping greed for money because it is seen as one of the seven deadly sins. As far as I know, being a lawyer is not a sin, however, a certain occupant of 1600 Penn. Ave., may have had that changed in the last four years. When one thinks of all the great portrayals of Scrooge; IMHO and that of thousands of others, is that the late, great Alistair Sims's Scrooge is 'Scrooginess' personified; a magnificent performance, in his 1951 black & white UK version. Sadly, it just being in black and white will deter millions of potential Scrooge fans, especially in the US. Albert Finney also did a fantastic Scrooge but, awfully, it was in a musical version that makes one want to pray for death after the 237th song! George C. Scott too, did a great Scrooge, perhaps too well. Besides, all I could see in his Scrooge was George S. Patton out of uniform! Even the early silent version had a better script than this dismal offering. Next year please, do yourself a favour and select a better Scrooge for your holiday viewing pleasure. Cheers, and Happy New Year! BH

The Christmas carol was created in 1822 . It was where Americans learned that the meaning of Christmas was sharing and caring about each other . Not for religious reasons . There’s really no religious reason for Christmas . The church just used the holiday to get some attention . The Bible does not mention a birth date for Jesus .
