    @@sukritialok3026 Koko was a lowland gorilla female who spoke American Sign Language taught to her by her human instructor/student, Penny Patterson. I don't recall the specific video where Penny describes Koko's linking of known words in her vocabulary to identify unknown food/objects, but I did make an error by telling you that cry-hurt-fruit was her way of communicating a lemon. It was actually a radish.

    No doubt at all. Some people do not realize this is not language, however. Bunny is doing something just as amazing though, taking random sounds, linking them to concepts, and then can use these signs to communicate. It's easy to miss since Bunny are using English words as signs. Imagine if the buttons were not words, and the sounds were not of English speech, but instead of random sounds, then you learn what each sound refer to, and try to communicate using these sounds. In fact, a human could probably not do better than Bunny only using these signs.

  • @grimfpv292

    @grimfpv292

    One could argue it's not English, but a new framework for exchange of concepts, abstract and concrete. But that is just another way of saying it is a language. And it's English at that even. (Meaning, she could communicate her needs, and even information about the world, with anyone capable in the English language)

  • @xiupsilon876

    @xiupsilon876

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@grimfpv292 It's not new, it's called semiosis, study of signs. Most definitions of language would require syntax and grammar, which Bunny does not have access to. It requires knowledge of Bunny's training to fully understand what concepts Bunny is referring to with her signifiers (the sounds/buttons). Sometimes Bunny's signifier and the concept in English does not overlap. Such as "upstairs", which Bunny have even generalized to mean something akin to "up", or "above". Bunny's communication is rich with information, but this information can't be interpreted by any random person, because Bunny is not using English. Compare that to the sentences I'm writing right here, which is english, and any english speaker regardless of background can clearly understand.

    @@xiupsilon876 Isn't that what language is? Agreed upon sounds used to communicate? Otherwise there would only be one language on the planet. It may be a rudimentary language without a set of grammatical rules, but it is a language. There are languages without sound, body language, sign language. This would fit the second definition. Bunny and her family are the community. noun 1. the principal method of human communication, consisting of words used in a structured and conventional way and conveyed by speech, writing, or gesture "a study of the way children learn language" 2. a system of communication used by a particular country or community.

  • @theindigopapillon3495

    @@xiupsilon876 It can't be interpreted yet. It is no different than a child first learning to talk or when a child who cannot speak begins to communicate using a speech or icon board. As they become more experienced they begin to hone their communication to become quite specific.

    When Bunny asked "Love you where now?" I could not understand her statement as anything else besides "do you still love me?" it's so pure, and I love it. I had a severe phobia of dogs growing up, then I went to UConn (home of the UConn Huskies) and after overcoming the general fear, I met my college best friend's childhood dog, and learned to love dogs first hand. Sadly her 14 y/o golden retriever entered doggie heaven a week after i met her. My best friend has since adopted two rescues, and they're both my favorite non-human friends, and I want to join her someday as a fellow dog caretaker, and best believe I'll try to use buttons to give my future dog a voice that I can understand too.

    7:20 It's funny, I commented on Undecided with Matt Ferrell's channel about the possibility of Neuralink allowing dogs to talk just like Dug from the Disney movie, UP. And he replied that he almost wouldn't want that because he's afraid some dogs are more judgmental, whiny, or complains a lot. I think he has a point and certainly all dogs have unique personalities but Bunny seems like such a sweetheart. Imagine how much more effective search and rescue dogs could be if they could communicate to us. Imagine all those times dogs were able to warn us with their senses but now with the ability to communicate to us exactly what it is that they are picking up on. I'm sure there'll be many false alarms but I think the possibilities are fascinating.

    Thank you so much for sharing, sweet, Bunny with us. I love that France gave Non-Human animals "human rights". I'd like to see the US do the same. Of course they have language. This is soooo great - don't listen to any of the "haters" out there. Bunny is wonderful - being able to watch her progress is a gift! Thanks so much! If my dog was younger, I'd set her up with a play date - they'd have such fun - my girl is like Bunny, sweet, gentle, playful - SMART!!! As a pup - IF - I was able to get the ball away from her - I could only do it that way - once - she's just that smart. Is Bunny gentle with other critters? My girl is. She had her nose on a tiny, baby bunny, didn't hurt it - just wanted to smell it. Right now, I'm watching her watch three Chipmunks forging for food - not 20 feet from her. She's watching and enjoying - not moving. Fur babies are the best. Much Love!

    Juliann Davis XD i bet my ass the soundboard would help there too! when you need to work around a filter (although in this case a technical one, the mediating soundboard) between what you want to say and what you can say, the brain actually has to work more, and this way it gets rid of many self hurdles, like anger and such, to express what it wants to express. I have experienced this in the form of poliglots being more cordial in conversation, since they know the struggle of expressing something in a new language. It adds to the empathy i think!

So does animals, fish, birds, reptiles, all spieces, in their own language. Surely intelligence can not be measured by the vocal cord?! And that is exactly what people does. I agree wholeheartedly! Why would need not jump at this opportunity to make a closer connection with the non-humans in our lives. I am grateful all that you and Bunny are to teach us how to teach and learn from each other and that so much more is possible than we ever dreamed. Very best to you and yours! :)

    It’s that human hubris that we are where it ends. We are the ultimate and that’s our downfall. It may take years but if this is just scratching the surface what’s next? (I’m completely amazed and I’m not sitting here like some pumpkin saying “oh magic dog tricks”) I’m looking at it as someone who questions everything and is really interested in progress and communication and believe that when you can’t communicate right away with some thing, it’s unfair to make blanket statements about it cognition and it’s brain capacity or its ability to understand and try or want to communicate. I was completely but when I found and rescued a dog from the street many many many many years ago and as I asked him to follow me home I was testing him to see what he understood and right away I knew he understood stop wait sit down come and OK. I didn’t know the stock and I kept him for four years he was completely aware of so much and I know that it’s not every single dog because they have to be taught somehow otherwise they just grow up like wild children but maybe it’s certain dogs that have more smart than others I’m not sure. Well I am sure of is having had two poodles in my childhood you’re super smart and super agile and she’s willing to work. Bunny’s amazing and you guys are amazing and you’re doing a magnificent job

    My dog when she wants that much attention especially gets excited if I get DOWN or SETTLE on the floor with her instead of expecting her to come UP to me on the couch.

    Cannot read text overlay. Too small. And not onscreen long enough. Note: Vertical orientation of shooting phone reduces size to 1/3 screen size.. exacerbating the problem.

    Meanwhile, at the Office for Human Behaviour, a report hits someone's desk. " Sir! Bunny is making an amazing breakthrough! Gets ON DEMAND ear scritches, by getting the human to buy buttons that say " give scritches " " I posit this demonstrates humans ARE capable of higher reasoning, given enough education and a caring dog to help them along in their development. I suggest this project go forward. " " Approved"

    I'm so glad this research is taking place! I hope that in a few years from now all dogs will have affordable access to these communication devices and loving caregivers (like you) to spend time learning "dog talk." Bunny is such a love and she's blazing the trail for the future of all dogs!

    crazy to see the progress that has been being made. I wish people would take time to do this in a lab, and read the dogs brain waves with things like an EEG. We could totally develop technology like in that rick and morty episode.

    Oh they have dogs in labs, especially Beagles, and you really don't wan to see the neuro experiments. This is much better, providing the "parents" have received sufficient training in how to respond. It falls on them to keep the dog encouraged instead of frustrated. Not every dog parent is qualified to try this. And not every dog is Bunny.
