Wes Craven was one of the very few genuine innovators who've ever worked on the horror genre. With his astute mind and erudition, he irreversibly changed the face of horror movies no less than *3 times* during his lifetime, when most directors generally only do it once: first, by making horror truly horrific and nauseating (as it should be) and an instrument to dissect the causes of society's moral decay as opposed to mere escapist entertainment in *Last House on the Left* (1972); then by giving the stagnant slasher genre a vivid new breath with I take to be his _magnum opus_ - the creepy, horrific and meditative *A Nightmare on Elm Street* (1984), and then one final time by giving the tired, formulaic genre the same thing that was responsible for the perceived renovation of theatre in the 60's - a deconstruction: first with *New Nightmare* (1994) and then finally with *Scream* (1996), cementing his status as one of the genre's greatest directors ever. Wherever you are, thank you, Wes Craven. We miss your genius and your human touch daily.

Will said. I pointed that out in my comment that he has rewritten horror three times. And I remember when A New nightmare came out everyone was like yeah that was pretty good but not like the best. And then scream came out and people were talking about Wes craven like he was the golden god. And you know I don't think he's the golden God but he's definitely an excellent director. Last House on the Left is frighteningly disgusting

@@kodiekulp Proof that mainstream "acceptance" is no indication of quality. Scream's script is abysmal, in fact it's so poor it sounds like a modern film. A New Nightmare is very flawed but is a superior "self-aware" experience to Scream IMHO.

I was like 7-10 years old when this came on tv and I remember the bathroom scene was so intense for me I had to shut it off. This was the only time ever I did this so it's burned in my mind. When I watched scary movie a few years later it was so therapeutic I had a massive laugh attack that was never again matched. It's funny how this franchise was responsible for two of my most intense reactions. Makes me wonder of what movie/scene was so scary back in the day that people couldn't watch it and what kids nowadays are gonna find too scary.

I really enjoyed your take on Scream. Does this mean you’ll be covering the sequels? I sure hope so! I remember a good bit of the second film, cannot remember a thing about part three, and never bothered watching the fourth installment, so I’d very much appreciate a refresher course via your magnificent reviews! Besides, this way we might be lucky enough to see more of Lloyd’s beloved Out Of Context Lone Star 911 Clip Of The Week sprinkled in amongst the critical film analyses! 22:20 I saw Scream pretty young as a kid before I knew anything about the world of horror movies, so I initially interpreted this scene as Billy revealing himself as actually being a guy named Anthony Perkins, that Billy Loomis was just a faux ego and never actually existed, and by him factitiously calling himself a psycho it was implied he had a history of doing this, a history of mental illness and psychopathy, hence being revealed to be the killer...

There was a big hint that Billy was a killer in his first appearance. When he is talking to Sidney, you hear a alternative-rockified version of “Don’t Fear the Reaper” play, which was famously used in “Halloween” when Michael Meyers was stalking Laurie in the car. Another important clue is when Sidney was first attacked. Billy comes through her window and drops his phone, the important thing was not his phone, but it fell next to his shoe. He was wearing a very distinctive pair of hiking boots, and those are the same boots you see step down from the toilet when Sidney is attacked in the bathroom.

You really think some Voltron virus is going to have any affect on the Snob? If he beat the bejesus out of Santa Claus nothing can stop the man. Glad to see you back and if I may add you're looking mighty snazzy tonight.

Great review. When this came up on YT I was surprised you hadn't already done it, seems like a given but since you're not a big fan, I get it. I remember when this came out and someone decided to wear a ghostface costume to school for Halloween (iirc the film came out around that time?) The look of pure terror on everyone's face was pure gold, somehow more memorable than the movie itself.

I had the same reaction to Scream. I saw it and liked it when I was a kid, but kinda developed a hipster-y attitude about it the older I got. It spawned so many awful 90s and early 2000s slasher flicks that it soured the whole thing, plus I kinda found the wink and nod, self-aware shit to be lame and pretentious. When Scream 4 came out, it directly made fun of the contrarians like myself and I got a chuckle out of it. I went back and watched the whole series and ended up loving it all over again. The characters are so great and memorable, the killer is iconic and the whole series is just a ton of fun. Super excited for Scream 5!

This feature came out around the year i went to my first year in High School here in Sweden. It marked for me a bit of a renaissance for horror flicks. It was a bit of a return to features that dealt with horror and young adolescents. I wouldnt say it was a phenomena but we sure had a lot of movie nights with our friends in class. It was social events. So while im not a horror fan or ever have been its still a feature that is a landmark i remember. So thank you Craven!

Even as much of a snapshot of the mid 90s as Scream is and despite a few unintentionally hilarious moments, a lot of this movie legitimately frightens to this day. There's a real sense of unease throughout the film, and there seemingly being nowhere safe as despite everyone knowing "the rules" of a Scary Movie that won't save you because the killer knows them too. Although with all the Ice Nine Kills I've been listening to I'm also half expecting Spencer Charnas to be the one under the Ghostface mask. "Your number's up, it's time to scream!"
