You’re a legend mate, did my brakes and it made a horrible noise when driving, turns out it was the dust shield!
After struggling (a lot) to change my wheel hub this happened and I thought I really messed up. Thank you Jeff for a quick fix that truly saved my mental health lol.
Thanks DIY Jeff! I just replaced my rear pads and rotors. The first time I drove the car after replacing the parts I had the exact problem. Your video was just what I needed to solve the problem.

This exact same thing happened to me literally minutes ago as I drove out a repair shop after having my rotors replaced. I ended up going back and they fixed it in seconds. The sound was loud enough to make me think it was something very serious.

Yeah my car often turns heads, except I have already been to two different shops who were specifically informed it was the backer plate, and the car still made noise afterward. My friend has a hoist, so I will just do it myself. It's such a simple fix.

Hi there i just had my front breaks done and now they are scraping and i dont have the money to take it to another shop what should i do ? Also i just checked the front rotors and they are smooth the only one that is rough is my rotor in the back can that cause scraping@DIYJeff
Awesome 👏. Just got my brakes done, and had squealing above 40 mph. Took the wheels off and found the dust shield against the rotor. Saved me the hassle of taking my car back to the shop. Content like this is outstanding

Michael, awesome! Glad the video helped you out.
This is what makes the internet great. I just spent $500 on rear brakes only and once I left the shop and got home on my quiet street, I hear this rubbing sound. I started wondering if the calipers were seized and then need to change those. I did my research and saw this great video and I think this could be the culprit. So when I bring car back in, I will tell them to check this before they try to sell me new calipers.

@Nesty Jr., I'm glad the video was helpful in solving your problem.
Simple and straight to the point. Will be checking this out on my car. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you! Seriously saved our sanity. I have a 100 series Landcruiser that kept making a metal scraping rotational sound exactly like this when I would turn left, it would stop on braking. It sounded like either a rock got caught or my brakes skipped the squeal and went right to metal on metal. Replaced the brakes and thought that was it. Then a week later the sound came back this time from the rear right. So we changed the calipers thinking they were hung up. Got it all back together and about said every swear word in the book as it did it again from the right. We couldn't figure it out. Looking up forum after forum and videos where everyone kept talking about cv joints, bearings and replacing brakes. We ruled out those and were stuck. Luckily I found your video and ran it out to my husband. Our wheel shroud wasn't bent on the edge like this one in the video, but it was hitting from behind, where a rivet from the e brake cable punched a bump into the shroud! Ground it down and threw on some white paint (or use mechanics Blue) so we could see if it was getting scraped off and its good!!!. Seems that since the car leans a bit as you turn, it was just enough to bump it. Thank you for saving us the headache and 💰

This is exactly what is happening to me right now. 100 series Landcruiser and all callipers, rotors, pads are new and still I get the scraping on turning left! I have just ordered up new ball joints. Can you describe where on the back plate the rubbing occurred for you. I am surely going to check again. Do I need to pull off the rotors again to see this?
I'm so freaking grateful for your video. My 2009 W169 Mercedes A class started with this horrible squealing at high speed. Got worse if I turned in one direction. Took it to an independent specialist who said I needed new discs and pads all round despite an MOT test months earlier without so much as an advisory. I took my wheel off, the backing plate was a little warped and corroded and the screwdriver fix has solved my problem. I will replace my pads and rotors but only when necessary. Thanks for saving me half a G 👍🏻 👍🏻👍🏻

So glad I came across this video. I've had a severe metal grinding sound on my front passenger side for some time and so we tried replacing the brakes however the sounds still there at any speed. So I'll be checking to see if this is the issue. My fiancee seems to think it's the wheel bearings, but it doesn't make a humming sound at all or vibrate in any fashion when driving or braking. It just makes a god awful grinding noise. So we are trying to see which it is without spending unnecessary money on a part that isnt bad. I will be checking myself tomorrow to see if the cover is hitting the rotor and checking the tire to see if it's the wheel bearing. Ty for sharing this video. You have truly helped prove my views and thoughts about the issue as per my car to my fiancee. Again deep thanks for helping me save money on this issue.

You’re a hero haha worked like a charm. i did approached it a little differently. I noticed that plate was somewhat flexible so I took a wrench/ longer rod and simply pushed against it through the rims of the wheel (with the wheel still being on). It was a lot easier and saved myself from using a jack and taking the wheel off. I didnt know exactly what part was rubbing so i pushed against all the parts i could to provide some room. After that, no scraping sounds haha just a shortcut for another shortcut ;).

@Chris Tian, let me know if this ends up being your issue. It's also possible that you have a faulty brake pad where the pad separated from its metal sheath. It's not an uncommon problem.
I had replaced the brakes and then had this sound intermittently for the past year. On inspection, everything seemed fine, but the margins were really close. A slight turn would typically produce the sound at about 60 kms/hr but only some of the time. Gapped it a bit more and problem now seems solved. Thanks so much. Video helped a lot.

That damn sound is the story of my life. Took my car to two different mechanics who grinded the backer plate and the sound was back a day later. Had new tires, new calipers and rotors, and all new brakes... car still sounds like shit. Lol. Sometimes sticking a screwdriver in there and just pushing on the backer plate to bend it away seemed like it worked, for a moment or two, at least. But this makes sense, since I was trying to bend the plate at the wrong places. Looking forward to taking the wheel off tomorrow and trying this.
Wow something so simple. Crazy thing is i had this same noise and took my tire off and bent the dust shield away from the rotor and it was perfect. THEN i happen to see your video & it proved what i did was correct😀😀👍🏽

I just got new brake pads in May of this year I just got back from Les Schwab to see if maybe my rotors needed resurfacing because I hear that interval grinding noise on mostly turns and now also going straight but after their inspection they said brakes and rotors are in good condition. Watching this because I drove over a pothole that’s unavoidable and now my tire is making some kind of grinding noise, so I’m trying to figure it out. Hoping it’s nothing too expensive. The pothole is by my workplace so I drive over it every single time, I guess my car finally decided to give up. I try to avoid it but it’s nearly impossible because I have to turn and it’s just in the right spot. City should really fix it. Never thought it would happen to me

SuperNovah , I’m glad the video was helpful. It’s great when you can fix something yourself.
I work 7 days a week and don't have much time to work on my vehicle and can't put into shop because I need it. Anyway I replaced my breaks about a year ago because I had a bad caliper that was sticking. Actually probably 5mo ago. Anyway the rotors got warped and I had to replace them agian but this time I didn't have much time so I took the whole caliper bracket off compressed calipers with prybar, put the glue stuff on back of pads changed rotors put back together. Took about 10min per side which is about usual seeing how I just did them and replace all pins, boots recently I didn't bother with them. They moved freely and caps where still on new boot covers. Anyway yesterday I had to pull over jack up car because of noise the spring had popped off caliper and was rubbing rim which I know was my fault being in a hurry as it was late and raining when I did it. Anyway last night I noticed a different metal sound that just started when I apply the breaks on the same side the spring popped off. Yes I put it back on and secured it and this sound seems different. The breaks work great and it's just this noise that I don't like. I always work on my vehicles but usually not in such a hurry to do them. I had to fix them asap because it started to shake when I applied the breaks about mid way then stopped as I pressed harder. The rotors where old but not sure why they failed like they did with good pads on them. The old pads didn't look much different from the new pads. I also do not use cheap break parts. I use ceramic pads name brand but don't remember although American made, and the rotors are the same brand with anti rust protection and supposedly designed for quieter and better stopping but not the ones with vents in them. One lever down because I hear they wear pads out faster and I don't like replacing brakes often. Excuse my typos I just realized I was about to spell brakes breaks lol. I'm gonna pop wheel off in a minute but hopefully if I don't find it you have an idea of the problem. I'm worried the spring may have popped completely off again and caliper is sitting crooked. Doesn't make sound but when brakes are pressed midway. I don't wanna take a day off from work because I don't get to work weekends in the winter months and this extra money goes into savings but I need my vehicle so may take off Sunday if I can't figure out before hand. Edit OK I fixed it temporarily. It was the caliper spring again. It popped off one side. I put it back on and double checked it seems good now but gonna replace it tonight.
I’ve been going crazy trying to figure out the grinding noise from my rear left wheel. I’ve been thinking it was the brake shoes rubbing on the inside of the disc and spent ages messing about with them, I also took the calliper off and checked the brake pads, all good. One thing I overlooked was that the brake disc dust cover (shroud) had rusted so bad that bits of it snapped off in my hand, I then pulled the rest of it off with some pliers. After watching g this video, I’m thinking there may be some of the shroud remaining and bent out of shape rubbing against the disc. I’m going to check it tomorrow, if it is the cause it will save me a trip to the mechanics.

@Nl_Bush_Doctor, it depends on which direction and how much the cowl is bent. On my car, I heard it while driving with and without the brake engaged. If you haven't had brake work done just before you heard the noise then that's not your problem. It's possible you are hearing the brake wear indicator designed to rub on the rotor when your brake pads are getting really low. It's a warning to replace your pads.

I have a grinding noise when I'm braking thought it was brakes at first they were fine but changed then thought I needed a new caliper changed as well still makes the noise when stopping the rotors don't look real bad so haven't changed them is it possible the shield is the issue as well?
@DIYJeff
2 жыл бұрын
@Brad Wells, your symptoms don’t point to the dust shield, but it is possible. I’ve heard some people experience this sound when braking, coming from the brake pad wear indicator. Even though you may have enough pad, the wear indicator may still be contacting the rotor.
I know this is off topic but I’ll ask. How do I reset ABS VSA on my 06 Honda CRV? Any help is appreciated
@DIYJeff
7 ай бұрын
If the light is on due to an ABS problem, whatever is causing the problem must be fixed or the light will just come back on. You’ll need a computer diagnostic tool to read the error code.
The easiest fix in the world
I put on new shields and have this problem. I can see where its rubbing but there is only about 1/8 inch of room for it to move. I cant get it to bend so im going to have to remove it and try to bend it out so it lays flat against the hub. Otherwise I guess I'll just cut off a half inch from the bottom. What a PITA.

Hey DIY Jeff,, I Have a Grinding sound on My newly installed Pads and Rotors, but the noise stops when the Brakes are applied, What do You think My issue is?
@DIYJeff
4 жыл бұрын
Ryan Austin, it's possible it could still be the dust shield as shown in the video, but if you look at the dust shield and it's not making contact with the rotor, then it's possible the pads are not releasing from the rotor when you let off the brakes. Pads are equipped with springs to push them away from the rotors when you let off the brake. It's possible they are barely touching the rotor causing the grinding sound and when you press on the brake, the pads make full contact and stop. One way to test this is take the tire off and twist the rotor. If you hear the grinding noise when twisting you can try to pinpoint where the sounds is coming from.
