Scrap Wood Reindeer / Bandsaw Magic!

In this speeded up time-lapse video, Nick shows how to make a deer with just a few quick cuts on a band saw. It’s a handy technique called “compound cutting” and it can be used to make all sorts of three-dimensional shapes. These particular reindeer are sized so you can cut them from scraps of 2x4s. Or, glue up blocks from different species of scrapwood. You can get the plans and full-size patterns for these reindeer in PDF format from or store at workshopcompan... . And if you're interested in knowing more about the band saw, pick up a copy of Nick's book, "Using the Band Saw," from workshopcompan... .

    I usually set it to a fairly slow speed -- 900 to 1500 rpm. The finer the grit, the slower the speed. If you don't give the abrasive time to clear the dust, it will load up and burn the wood.

    Is there any reason the wood for the nose and the wood for the antlers has to be the full width of the board? Seems to me to be wasted wood. Unless I’m missing something there’s probably enough to do at least one more reindeer out of the parts that are cut away.

  • @WorkshopCompanion

    You may be using a blade that's too wide to turn the corners without stress -- a 1/4" (6 mm) blade will just barely make the turns. Or you're attempting to saw thick stock with a normal blade. The gullets of a normal blade aren't deep enough to clear the sawdust when cutting stock over 3/4" (19 mm) thick. The chips pack in the gullets increasing the friction, and the blade heats up and breaks. Try a 3/16" (4 mm) 4 TPI skip-tooth blade.

  • @WorkshopCompanion

    @WorkshopCompanion

    2 жыл бұрын

    If it's your first, look to the used market. (1) Since tools don't wear out like other consumer goods, you get more band saw for your bucks. (2) You get to know the saw inside and out because the troll who had it before you trashed it and now you have to clean it, restore it, and re-align it. (3) If it isn't what you wanted, you don't have that much money invested. But you still have the experience and you're no one tool wiser. As for brands, I have had good experiences with Shopsmith, Delta, Craftsman, Grizzly, and Atlas, all from the last half of the twentieth century.

  • @WorkshopCompanion

    @WorkshopCompanion

    Use 1/4" skip tooth (6 tpi) or 3/16" (10 tpi). If you don't drill the holes for the antlers and the legs, you'll need the smaller blade to negotiate the tight curves.
