I know one of the people that was managing homebuilder in Tasmania from shortly after it was announced until now. From what they told me the scheme had two (2) employees in Tasmania, them and another person, to manage all aspects of homebuilder which included receiving the applications, answering questions, reviewing applications, transfering money, answering complaints, etc. which had them in catastrophic stress due to the lack of resources. This was further compounded by the Federal government giving them access to the money to enact homebuilder but not actually allowing them to hire enough staff to manage the scheme with the money. The end result was state government employees were pulled away from other duties to manage the federal scheme but the states couldn't add more resources because it would have come from their own budget during a lockdown. It was designed to look good on paper, but fail in implementation and look like the states were the cause of the failure.

The example from Australia that is - rightfully - held up as gold standard, is the fast and hard lockdowns, and excellent contact tracing that are controlling outbreaks in Victoria, not actually the whole of Australia. It’s not a coincidence that Victoria has a Labor government and so is not in thrall to the chamber of commerce and can act for the protection of the people (whether the people appreciate it or not). The federal (national) government is Tory and so they have acted on big business advice/demands when it comes to their responsibilities in closing borders, income support (states cannot raise money through taxes so social welfare is federal), and vaccine rollout - all of which is also an example… of what not to do.

25:33 ok, clarinet nerd here, you may think the distinction between a clarinet and a saxophone is the material or the curve a sax has, maybe even the distinction between having open holes like most clarinet or keys like a sax, but the distinction is is actually none of the above. if you made a clarinet out of brass it would sound like a slightly brighter than normal clarinet, and if you made a saxophone out of wood, it would sound like a darker sax. neither instrument swaps their sound when made of the other material. same for the shape, the earliest saxophones were actually straight and had to be played standing or even elevated so you wouldn’t be banging it on the ground while you played it, and bass clarinets are *roughly* normal saxophone shaped. The holes don’t matter either, there are plateau clarinets which have keys like a sax, and the main reason saxophones don’t have open holes is because you’d need massive hands to cover them. i believe bass clarinets also have keys and not open holes. So what is the difference? Well I’m glad you asked! The real difference between a saxophone and a clarinet is, drumroll please: The shape of the bore! Saxophones have a conical bore, meaning the end you blow into is significantly smaller than the end the sound comes out of, and it gets gradually bigger as you get closer to the bell end. Whereas, the clarinet has a cylindrical bore, meaning, if you ignore the bell and the mouthpiece, the end you blow into and the end the sound comes out of are roughly the same diameter, with a taper down on the mouthpiece because it wouldn’t work without it and a taper open at the bell to amplify the sound. Hope that explanation didn’t *BORE* our readers! Okay I’ll see myself out… And yes, pedants who are gonna pedant my mild pedanticism here, I know that, at least on a clarinet, the sound largely comes out of the holes and not the bell, but the bell is there for a reason, so I’d say calling it the end the sound comes out of is fair.

I was thinking about this the other day, and I am not so sure that his skill uncovering and reporting on media and corporate corruption of our government and democratic process and being a funny fucking smartass is as useful for running a government as it may appear. We're talking about running a country here, a massive undertaking that takes skill, experience, knowledge, and connections, whether you're corrupt or not. It's probably easier being corrupt honestly, and while I'm confident in Jojo's genuine well-meaning and concern for any and all of the good causes he works for, as well as a general trust in his moral compass and ability to make sound judgments, I'm not sure it is enough to carry the full weight of the state machine bureaucracy on one's shoulders. Then again... How could a well-intentioned but inexperienced politician fuck up the country any worse than the cabal of malicious career criminals who currently run the government?

They had announced that mid-year the company would be departing Woolworths to run independently (some say because Woolworths didn't want any part of the gambling debate running around pokies, almost non existent at our venue but a huge part of the business in most venues). Then, Covid. Suddenly the seperation was aborted, we ALH employees counted as Woolies who were killing it in trade (and their bottle shops were also raking it in) and therefore not required to pay us. So much fun being a job searcher knowing the day your industry opens you're going back to your job, which we were guaranteed. Except at my venue they bought in a new exec chef who decided not to call in a couple dozen employees in favour of people he had worked with before. I walked out mid Friday night shift not long after.
