Just found a nice fresh rub line coming from a stream, going thru an oak flat, going towards the edge of a field. in the middle of this line, was a nice fresh scrape about 3- 3 1/2 ft in diameter. trees the deer is hitting are all about 6 " wide and most are shredded!

Trail cams are defiantly helpful if used right. I like to look at the whole area, what kind of food is available, and where they are bedding. Over 90% of the time when I find a good rub line that I want to hunt, I wait until the next season or longer to hunt it. To me figuring out what time of the season they make the rub line is more important then the rub line. The why I figure that out is following the rub lines and actually figuring out the timing of the rub line by looking at what the deer have available to them.

The rubs and scrapes I find are about 50-100ft apart and they are made on trees at the minimum of 3 inches in diameter. It rained hard for 2 days in my area in Sunset,SC and then the next day was just misting. That third day I found a fresh big scrape-had to have been early that morning- on a big tree and the buck tore the tree up-looked like he took a hatchet to it.

cool the old rub was so warn in the plant itself. that it caused the plant to grow more sprouts underneath the rub..nature takes care of itself #nature

This is true! Nature has a way of healing itself.

I haven't scouted the entire 40 acres I have but I found one rub on a maple tree near one corner of it that is about 3" to 4" in diameter. The only rub I've found so far. The land isn't as flat as this - it's one big ridge in the middle and two intersecting hollows on one side and part of another on the upper corner.

Yeah. I see hoof prints in the leaves all over the place out there. Tried to make two small clover plots but it hasn't rained out there much until today I think. Probably have to replant next spring or so.

How do you get in that thick stuff without spooking deer? Any tips will be appreciated!

I usually set it up a long time in advance. Trim you an entrance and exit trail so you can get in quite. Hunt it only at the perfect times.

What if theres just one random rub? i found a monster rub and looked everywere and couldn't find another rub, the tree was literally the size of a paint can

Sounds like a big buck is in the area. A single rub don't give a whole lot of information other then maybe like the one you are talking about sounds like there is at least one big buck in the area.

Sounds like it's a sign post rub most likely. Scout around u will find bedding or rut funnel, near. Hunt it

i’ve got one buck on camera so far in a 7 acre lot and i’ve seen about 8 rubs throughout the land and he’s a big 10 pointer but i’m trying to get him to stick around in the area so i can find his sheds. what do i do?

That’s a tough one he probably already has his core areas set and are not likely to change. Maybe he will drop them on your property hard to say. You could always kill him before season is over if he’s on your property in the daytime.

I found a 600 foot radius area with 20 scrapes in it and on the other side of the slough there are a few rubs and mean they traumatize a bunch of 6 ft plants with thumb size stalks. But no scrapes near the rubs and no rubs near the scrapes. Both areas could be a little over 100 yrds from each other. What do you make of something like that?

+Parrot Bill It is hard to say without seeing it. A lot of times the rubs are made on the bucks trails between bedding and feeding areas earlier in the season and scrapes are made were a lot of doe travels routes are. Not always the case but a lot of the time.

Jacob Schmitt Yesterday I found 10 rubs on small trees 2 to 3 inches in diameter. I saw your video on a rub trail and looked to see if there were more. The trail lasted about 5 yrds, but went through 2 thickets and a bedding area. Should I setup a stand along that this weekend?

how are you guys telling the difference between a scrape and a rub?

I have one and a half acres of nothing but old rubs and like three new rubs but what does this mean I don't know why but if I find a new rub there is an old one right by it and it is very thick in there so would you reccomend me thin it a little? and thanks for answering the rest of my questions

I don't think I would thin it out. The bucks are most likely using it because it is thick. The reason there are old and new rubs is because it gets used year after year. I bet there is a very good spot pretty close by to hunt.

Jacob Schmitt but the only problem is that we have horses and one horse is in this pasture but he only stays in the front part and it is surrounded by open area so do you think any of this affects the deer coming into it?

Konner Miller I don't think the horses will affect them much. They will stay away from the horses some distance but as long as the horses are there all the time the deer will be used to them. If it is open all around they will hold close to some available cover there.

By no means am I bashing your tactics man. Purely an honest question, but do you think that walking up and down his rub line, and touching them with your bow, that you have touched and has your scent on it can cause the buck to stop using that line?

+Jake Lovewell In this case there is no way he would ever stop using it. This is late in the season and our bow season don't end until the last day in February. He might not even have any horns. Also I almost always scout rub lines for future seasons. unless it is very early in the season(the first few days) and then I am fixing to put an arrow in him. If I was planing on hunting the area anytime soon I would not touch them or anything like that. I don't think it would make him stop using it but I really don't want to educate a deer I am fixing to hunt in anyway.

It is a very good indicator but not always. I would assume that there was a big buck in the area especially if there was more then 1 big tree like that or if it was really tour up.

I’m kinda late but it comes in September

I’m new to deer hunting and need help finding the deer. I do stalk hunting and I do find tracks, scrapes, and rubs. But they are few and hard to make sense of what direction they are going. I suspect the area I’m hunting is mostly traveled by one buck and he’s very mature considering the scrapes are on huge trees and not like what you are showing. It seems it’s a passage area and I’m having a hard time figuring out where to look.

All Things Magnum it sounds like that’s a good buck I will say one thing whitetails are very weary and a very hard to stalk in most conditions it is possible though to do there are guys that have done it with regular success it’s hard to give really good advice without even seeing the area but it sounds like if there are fresh buck sign like you talked about in your other comment I would be setting up on it at least for a few hunts and then go from there

All Things Magnum video analysis i offer on my website but if I was you I would hunt that fresh buck sign immediately they are in rut right now and I would be there tomorrow if I was you and at least hunt it for a few times and then go from there but if you want I can do a video analysis of the area you just go to my website and buy it but I really think the first thing you need to do is hunt that fresh buck sign and hunt it long and hard for at least 2 days

Wael Harp take horns from a spike .rub the same size trees as the video.do it one handed.dont touch the tree with your other hand.you will never rub the tree like that

John Moye because the mature bucks feel safe, a mature buck won’t move in the open often during daylight hours , so it’s best to find a highly active deer funnel or route they use between bedding etc. thick cover= big bucks during day light you may have to cut some small shooting lanes or cut a few limbs so you can get a shot where you think the deer will come from. the only thing i won't hunt in that area is, it's too open and deer most likely passing through it only... i prefer to hunt near the bedding area that's thicker and ridge, if you wanna see and kill bigger buck.. for me, i would check all those out and follow it to where it's going and food source... people who hunt that area will most likely see does only...

Doug Beard sounds like you have some good hunting and got them figured out what state do you hunt

SMALL deer make rubs on SMALL trees. Most of the rubs filmed were on very small trees.....made by a spike or small 4-point. If you hunt taking this guy's advice you're definitely wasting your time. If you want to find a trophy whitetail look for a rub(s) on a tree that is 5 to 6 inches in diameter.

joeychampagne sorry to bust your bubble but big bucks rub small trees too. It is a good indicator that there is a big buck in the area when you find big trees rubbed but it’s not the only thing to look for. I got two on my wall I killed off the exact area that I filmed these rubs. One has almost a 19 inch inside spread I killed him and another good buck there a couple months before I filmed these rubs.
