    Corrections, clarifications, and updates from @MusNothus: · Jet boots did not exist when I made this guide. So…just forget everything I said and use jet boots instead. · As I mention in the video, the M1000 and Boomstick loadouts I showed (11121 and 11212, respectively) were designed solely for mobility and not combat utility, and therefore they’re really not great for combat (e.g., Fear the Boomstick is not very good for combat and White Phosphorus is a much better choice). The loadouts I actually use for playing on Hazard 5 are 23121 for the M1000 with hoverclock and 11313 for the Boomstick with special powder. I explain why on a Karl.gg loadout page I made: karl.gg/preview/8933#/ · Cool flare technique: I wish I had included this in the video because it’s super useful and I do it all the time, but if you hit F to throw a flare while you are being pulled forward by the grappling hook, the flare will inherit your momentum and will move along with you. In effect, this lights up the cave as you move through it, which lets you see way more than you would throwing a flare while stationary, and it saves you from having to shoot a flare from your flare gun. · Cool movement technique: This wasn’t possible at the time of this video but became possible with an update. If you throw an object in the air and grapple after it, you can catch the object midair and throw it again, allowing you to throw objects much higher. For example: www.reddit.com/r/DeepRockGalactic/comments/uxf661/scout_can_throw_heavy_objects_high_with_grappling/. It can also be done with special powder: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqJttJaOlLPFh9I.html. On low gravity, this allows you to keep objects in the air indefinitely and even bring them all the way up the drop pod shaft. · 08:31 The speed boost from “Momentum” on the grappling hook does seem to kick in midair, so you do start moving faster through the air, rather than only moving faster after you hit the ground, but I think the fact that it’s so hard to notice proves that the midair effect isn’t that beneficial. 09:18 This also means that you are able to stack overcharged winch and momentum’s effects to slingshot yourself even faster, but whether or not you actually want to do that (since you might just hurt yourself more) or how useful it is to do so is debatable. · 05:28 I mentioned I don’t know how to interpret the grappling hook’s max speed. @boreal9458 explained that the normal walking speed is 300 and the normal running speed is 435. Max speed on the grappling hook is the speed you are pulled forward, and when you let go, your speed is cut in half. As another reference, @xanthousizalith5641 says that the spring-loaded ripper moves at a speed of 1600. · 11:44 I mentioned I reassigned caps lock to be another left shift. Here’s how: I downloaded a program called KeyTweak which is a registry editor that allows you to reassign the function of different keys on your keyboard. KeyTweak is super easy to use and very helpful, so I'd recommend it (though be careful since it is a registry editor). Basically, in that program I reprogrammed the caps lock key to function as an additional left shift key. I really like using the caps lock key for sprinting because it's directly across from the 'A' key, so if my ring finger is on 'A' then it's really easy for my pinky to be on caps lock without my straining my hand to reach it. You could just go into the game and set caps lock as a secondary input for sprint, but then you'll still be turning caps lock on, so you might accidentally type stuff in all caps in chat. I also never actually want to use caps lock, so it hasn't been a problem for me to not have a key for caps lock anymore. I also noticed that there would be times when I was panicking in the game when I'd accidentally hit 'tab' and I'd pull up my terrain scanner and that would get me killed, so I set 'tab' as my secondary input for sprint and now I have ` open my terrain scanner. That means that the tab key, caps lock key, and left shift key all cause me to sprint now, so I can just slam my pinky down indiscriminately and I'll still end up sprinting. · On a related note, one of my favorite QoL mods is mod.io/g/drg/m/sprint-by-default-hold-to-walk because you no longer have to hit shift to sprint. This used to make my pinky finger sore if I played too long, but now I don’t have to worry about that. It also helps prevent accidentally triggering dash when you were just trying to sprint. Keep “hold to sprint” unchecked when using this mod. · 17:01 I’ve heard others give the advice that you want to angle your power attack to be about 45 degrees downward from the angle of your grappling hook (i.e., rather than thinking of it as 15 to 30 degrees downward from level with flat ground), which does seem to be about right on average, though that angle is not exact and depends on how early you let go of the grappling hook, as I explain. · 15:30 Mission seeds are different now, so this seed no longer works. The mission selector also doesn’t seem to give you the exact same cave shape anymore either. · 21:13 With rocky mountain stout or in Sandblasted Corridors, you can do a regular pickaxe strike and then do a power attack immediate afterwards to break terrain twice in a short period of time. Credit to @DrillingInTheNameOf for pointing this out. · 25:34 Another important breakpoint is that on hazard 5 with serrated edge, you can one-shot a caretaker’s appendages with a power attack, but without serrated edge you don’t quite kill them with a power attack. · 27:01 Unfortunately you no longer can start taming a grunt and then keep taming it if you fall away from it. Now you need to remain close by for the whole duration of the charming process. · 28:31 AxisKronos has a video on all the “god spots” in the game: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dmqZuamPnNncgaw.htmlsi=oxMYUlzEnngHWPLd, which are locations where ground melee enemies can’t hit you. Many are best reached by a scout, so I think this is relevant information for scouts to know. · 29:05 As @blueboy1958 mentioned, scouts can help their teammates by grappling to a high up cave angel, then flying it down to the ground so their teammates can ride it. · 29:35 Similar to knocking down health, if you’re ever at a mineral vein but you’re full on that mineral, it’s still best to pickaxe out the whole vein if you have the time. That will allow you or your teammates to quickly pick it up later, which is especially useful if you’re in a huge swarm later and don’t have time to pickaxe it down then. This is also just a courteous thing to do, in my opinion. · 34:48 Another way to gauge distance for bulk smashing is to aim your grappling hook at something more than 16 meters away from you in the direction of the bulk (I often like picking something at my max grappling hook range away), wait for it to walk close enough to you that you see the embers appear, and then grapple. · 34:42 If you are client and have high ping, do not attempt to use the bulk smash technique. The lag from high ping somehow allows bulks to smash before you get out of their attack radius, so they will kill you. · 35:08 To kill more bugs with a bulk smash, pheromone the bulk / ghost / crassus beforehand with a crossbow bolt or pheromone grenade so that bugs will bunch up around it while attacking it. · 38:28 and 40:02 As LazyMaybe explains in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/hK16xMiHeJm8mpc.html, Quickfire Ejector for the boomstick does not improve your reload time as much as you’d think and only makes you reload 0.15 seconds faster than with double trigger, because the game incorporates the rate of fire into the amount of time it takes to reload. Therefore, double trigger really is a much better choice overall. · 40:46 It now takes 2 cryo grenades to freeze a breeder. · 53:54 Even though dash doesn’t completely negate the slowdowns of stun or electricity, you still do of course speed up when you dash while stunned or electrified, so that’s not to say that dash is not useful in this context. In fact, I’d say dash is the best way to get away from a slasher after it stuns you, aside from using the grappling hook. · 54:32 @sawyerwedeimann3767 says, “the second wind perk continues when grappling. so if you run for 2 seconds then grapple and keep running when you land you only need to run for 2 more seconds and you will keep the boost as long as you keep moving so if you use it right it can be an almost permanent speedboost,” though I haven’t personally tested it. · 55:20 The boltshark didn’t exist when I made this guide. It has a Battle Frenzy perk that gives you a 50% movement speed bonus for 2.5 seconds after killing an enemy. · 55:26 With Season 3, that GK2’s Battle Frenzy got combined with Battle Cool, so now it gives you a 50% movement speed bonus and a spread recovery bonus after killing an enemy. · 57:08 General movement/kiting tip: If you watch really good players play, you’ll see that they always keep moving, they jump a lot, and they grapple a lot. These things combined will help prevent you from getting hit by enemies, and jumping in particular also helps prevent you from getting stuck on irregular terrain. Plus, jumping and grappling allows you to dodge in the vertical axis, rather than just in the horizontal axes like strafing does. You can also strafe while in the air, or “air strafe.” · 59:58 The boomerang didn’t exist when I made this guide. You can also throw a boomerang before getting grabbed and hope it gets the grabber/leech. · 1:14:09 @tddzyx7070 says you can ledge grab off silicate harvesters and lootbugs, though I haven’t tested that.

    Since I can’t edit the pinned comment, I will add any new updates to this comment: • I don’t think any of the bugs I mentioned have been patched, but please correct me if I’m wrong. • One technique that everyone kind of already does intuitively: the scout scoop. When there are minerals scattered over the ground, you can grapple through them to pick them up quickly. • As the scout, it’s often best for you to avoid calling Molly away from your teammates, since you can grapple back and forth to Molly quickly, but they can’t. • This is another movement guide that came out after I posted mine, and I think it gives some good advice: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oJ57sMughrKphZs.html • There are some good fall damage-related tips in this guide kzread.info/dash/bejne/kYGbmsamoNvYm5M.html, which came out after I posted my guide. • www.youtube.com/@cupnoodles7109 shows some really cool techniques on their channel. They also have a guide to avoiding fall damage and a huge list of tips and tricks on Reddit. I can’t share those URLs directly because KZread doesn’t like external links and immediately deletes my comment when I try to share those links. Their Reddit username is “SheepHerdr,” though, so you can just search them on Reddit and look through their posts to find this stuff. • Check out this newer guide on bunny hopping kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaZkspaFZ5mvpqw.html for a bunch of tips, including stuff about capped and uncapped speed boosts, how frame rate affects bunny hopping, and how overcharged winch is different for guests than for the host.

    Thanks for the many updates. I'd like to add that the first level of the grappling hook is more than -0.5, once you factor in the later choices. Once cool down is reduced by the other upgrades I always take, -0.5 is a greater improvement than the percentage you mentioned at first.

Between you, Siirvend, Sniss, DRG Historian, etc. I feel like a kid in a candy shop here on DRG KZread. (Edit) You missed a handy little trick with the auto-switch setting. You can stop it from switching by holding the interact button while you let go of the fire button. I learned this by accident while collecting high-up fossils.

However, after all the knowledge you parted in this video the beard is definitely greener than I thought. I'm excited to level up my game considerably though so thank you for all the tips. Also, the office parkour skit had me dying laughing. Great video, rock 'n' stone!

    I wish hoverboots cut your vertical momentum but allowed your horizontal momentum to continue. It'd be really fun as a kind of general mobility perk alongside Dash, where you could use Hoverboots to extend the distance of a running jump OR cancel fall damage, or any number of things. The reason Dash is such a good and fun perk to use is because it lets you DO things with it. Dash can get you out of goop, run away from enemies, Clear a large gap, or cross a distance with a heavy object faster. Hoverboots on any class other than scout is basically JUST for negating fall damage, as they don't have ways to gain height organically to take advantage of the hover to make ledges. It has the potential to be such a fun movement perk and as it is it's just so thoroughly underwhelming.

  • @MusNothus

    @MusNothus

    2 жыл бұрын

    Oh that is such an interesting idea, I've never thought about it that way. It'd be awesome if it locked your vertical position in place but then you could walk around horizontally while hovering, especially since you can burn bugs with it so you could walk over a crowd or slide over a crowd if it just maintained your horizontal momentum. That'd be such a cool addition to the perk and I don't think it'd be too overpowered to be viable, even though it could help other classes clear gaps easier.

    Also being at a standstill if it happens during a swarm is asking for a few swipes to take you out, or getting hit by a projectile. I just use special powder to break my fall now if my grapple is recharging, or if I mistakenly grabbed a surface with my grapple that will result in fall damage, OR if I'm trying to get a hard to reach mineral vein but fail to land inside the alcove I made with a power attack.

  • @MusNothus

    @MusNothus

    For anyone who's interested in more info on the ways I recorded stuff in this video, here's some more detail: I used to record gameplay with GeForce Experience, but it can only record two audio tracks and if I remember correctly will put your game audio incoming voice chat audio on one track, then the other track will be your mic, so there's no way to separate voice chat audio from game audio completely (there are some overly complicated things you can do with virtual audio outputs using voicemeeter or VB cable, but I found it to be unnecessarily complicated and still didn't get the result I wanted). So anyway, now I use OBS to record because you can very easily isolate game audio, your mic, and discord audio into 3 separate tracks, and it's free. If you do use OBS, this video is a nice explanation of how to set it up: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pnerzMaHftmWfJc.html, and I found that you just have to have DRG in windowed fullscreen to make it work best (I can give more details on how to set that all up if anyone is curious). I do use GeForce Experience for the "Ansel" function, though. Ansel is actually meant for taking screenshots, but if you just hide the side panel and the mouse cursor, then you can record video the same way you would record regular gameplay. In a solo game, entering Ansel mode will freeze the gameplay, so that's how I got those freeze frame shots of the bulk detonator later in the guide and how I got the thumbnail. If you're not playing solo (i.e., even if you're the only player but didn't select solo so others can join), then the game doesn't pause so you can get live action shots. That's how I got a lot of the stationary third person shots in the guide. Ansel is really awesome, and it also has a ton of cool filters you can use. But Ansel does have some limitations. It can only move a certain range from the player using it, it can't "follow" players, and rotating it is done with the mouse so it's very hard to get that to look smooth (that's why for most Ansel shots I either keep the camera stationary or I only move it forward, back, or left/right because that's done with the keyboard and is smoother, but I rarely rotate when filming in Ansel). Better Spectator fills in a lot of those areas where Ansel is lack because Better Spectator can follow the player and you can get smooth shots panning from one player to another. It's really an awesome mod in general, basically allowing you to view other players when you're downed but with the ability to zoom in and out, rotate, and also pan between different players and entities like Molly, BET-C, and Doretta. It also removes the static video effect from the normal death camera. When it pans between entities, it also does so smoothly, which was very nice for filming. So, I used "Better Spectator" for a ton of shots in this guide. I also used it for the shots outside the space rig in this intro, by essentially zooming out on one character, then panning to the next, and then zooming in. And I used "Better Spectator" for some of the last shots in the guide like when I'm panning around a big cave in Magma Core, which I pulled off by spawning an additional MULE as an additional focal point for the camera, then hiding the MULEs with the "Spawn Menu" mod (drg.mod.io/spawn-menu), and then just panning from one MULE to the next and then to my dwarf. The "Spawn Menu" mod was also indispensable for making this guide.

    Scout is my favourite class and I am experienced with it, so I knew most of tricks and methods. However, this guide was still helpful: it provided me with theroretical basis and hard numbers for a lot of things that I've been "eyeballing" and based my estimates on gut feeling. And I've picked up a couple of new tricks from the guide, so it was, all in all, helpful and surprisingly enjoyable experience. I commend manner of presentation and structure of the guide.

    6:17 A reference for Scout's grapple speed. Driller's Spring Loaded Rippers have an internal speed of 1600, so if you go without the speed boost you'll be slightly slower than Spring Loaded Rippers, if you take the boost you'll be notably FASTER than Rippers. Obviously this is more important than just Rippers, but it's a good reference point for anyone coming to scout from Driller or anyone who plays with a Driller who likes to use Rippers. 40:10 Quickfire Ejector is actually completely useless. Due to how Rate of Fire works in DRG, you start reloading so much sooner after shooting, that you only actually gain a couple of frames from Quickfire Ejector. Great video, these are some real neat tips for me to use when I'm running around as Scout next

    That is a really interesting comparison. Maybe someday we'll make a youtube short showing my scout grappling away from @DrillingInTheNameOf's driller as he throws a ripper at me, to demonstrate that with one mod I survive and with the other I do not. Also yeah I think I learned that quirk about RoF and reload speed after I made this guide, so I didn't realize that RoF factors into your reload speed in a way that makes some reload speed upgrades have slower reload times than just taking RoF boosts...so I guess I got lucky by not recommending Quickfire Ejector in this guide even if I didn't understand why!

    There is one thing I noticed related to momentum mod on the grappling hook. If you use the perk dash while you are under the effect of momentum movement speed buff the ms bonus provided by dash will end at the same time the momentum movespeed ends. So basically your dash can get cancelled completely because of this bug. Anyway excelleng video! Keep up the awesome work, rock and stone!

  • @MusNothus

    @MusNothus

    Oh wow I just tested it out and that's super annoying. I can't even tell if dash and momentum's speed boosts stack or if it just switches you from the momentum boost to the dash boost. That's really good to know! I'll add that to my clarifications comment.

    Giving a like and a comment solely for you petting the lootbug @ 20:30 No, but in all seriousness: great guide. I was confident with the grappling hook already but I've learned some new stuff over here. Big props. Also thanks for an idea and a loadout for the GK2. My favourite scout gun and that overclock seemed nice yet when I tried it, it felt underwhelming. I'll do it again with your loadout and see how it fares. Cheers!

    In regards to the grappling hook mods, I find that momentum helps with kiting enemies when you prefer a specific range, as while the bypassed integrity check bonus lets you grapple more often, the momentum lets you use your walking movement to maintain a fixed ideal range from bugs, useful for closer-range drak builds that want the speed boost to safely stay close, but not too close, to oncoming grunts. Of course, -1s cooldown is still very powerful, and the speed boost is less necessary for certain builds of gk2/zhukovs/drak.

  • @MusNothus

    @MusNothus

    Yeah momentum is definitely growing on me more and more since I made this video for the reasons you stated. I'm to the point now where I'm honestly not sure which of the two options I'm going to settle on for my main loadout.

    Such a clean and helpful vid I'd love some info on how you do your camera stuff to record things in motion with ansel.

  • @MusNothus

    @MusNothus

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, and yeah I'd be happy to share some techniques! You might already know a lot of this, but I'll start from the beginning for others who see this comment and haven't used Ansel before. The TL;DR for your question, though, is that for taking shots that follow characters as they move, I actually used the Better Spectator mod instead of Ansel. I did definitely use GeForce Experience / Ansel for a lot of shots, though. It's actually meant for taking screenshots, but if you just hide the side panel and the mouse cursor, then you can record video with some additional program (either with GeForce Experience itself or something else; I used OBS because it can also isolate game audio, your mic, and discord audio into 3 separate tracks). In a solo game, entering Ansel mode will freeze the gameplay, so that's how I got those freeze frame shots of the bulk detonator later in the guide and how I got the thumbnail. If you're not playing solo (i.e., even if you're the only player but didn't select solo so other can join), then the game doesn't pause so you can get live action shots. For the shots that follow a character as they move, I actually used the mod "Better Spectator." I used the original version created by ArcticEcho (mod.io/members/arcticecho), but that version has been retired now (drg.mod.io/better-spectator?preview=061afddb01514456696e900f55dc2b2a). AssemblyStorm (mod.io/members/assemblystorm) has resurrected it, though (drg.mod.io/better-spectator-reloaded), and they have a youtube channel, too, so you should check them out (kzread.info/dron/BrIgI4pEU8AYOkxrVkVj7g.html).

    As someone who’s new to the game but learns fast, this video is EXACTLY what I needed and exceptionally well put together. Great video! If anyone sees this, is there anything nowadays in the current game that has changed that I should know about as a scout? Or is this all still relevant to a T?

    Glad to hear it! There haven't been any big changes that affect the things I talked about in this guide, but I wrote a "corrections, clarifications, and updates" comment that is pinned now with a few things. One big new technique that wasn't possible before is to throw something into the air, grapple up towards it, catch it midair, then throw it again. But yeah otherwise the game updates haven't changed too much about scout movement.
