Scotty Bowers and his director, Matt Tyrnauer, did a Q&A after the 7:35 p.m. screening of their "Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood" doc at IFC in NYC on Saturday, August 4, 2018.
This was the 95-year-old's first trip to NYC in decades, but he decided he wanted to say hi to the East Coast as the film - with its #1 per-screen-average at the B.O. - rolls out, so he had dialysis and hopped on a plane.
I captured most of the talkback, and then tacked on a shorter intro they did for the following screening, as well as some quick footage of Scotty being wheeled into the legendary Stonewall Inn!
Now THAT'S gay.

Great movie, but what was most touching was how it humanized Scotty. I ended up caring less about the gossip and assignations, and more about him. He's an amazing character and I envy the magical life he has led. Good health to him!

I was impressed by Scotty's take on the events concerning his childhood. "I was trickin' from the start" had me LOL! Incredible. Alas, I am reminded by the quote "....I am convinced that life is only 15% of what happens to me, and 85% of how I react to it."

I saw the film at the Provincetown International Film Festival in June 2018. Scotty's story is fascinating. I believe that it serves a purpose. Plenty of people pretend to be perfect while lecturing us about our behavior, but ultimately, they are human just like we are, albeit perhaps a bit hypocritical. We pretend to be accepting, but are we? Regardless of the motives of the filmmaker or of Scotty himself, we can learn a great deal from the film. Let people be themselves. Don't put any person on a throne and pretend that they are not human. You know, the fame thing isn't really real, right. The people involved had every right to live their life just as each of us have that right. Because of the status we bestowed upon them, they couldn't, at least openly. See a problem with that? Film and television stars, like all actors, are doing a job. It's a career, not their life. Let's stop hanging on their every word and holding them to a different standard.

They were being themselves, just not publicly. Even today you don't hear about what these people do privately, and rightly so. As far as acting being a job, I say far from it. Hollywood actors have always been cultural and political propagandists for a marginal cadre of individuals who would mold and manipulate public opinion and behavior for mostly profit oriented motives. These actors regular lives were deeply entwined w/ their screen lives and visa-versa. Lastly, let's not forget that the world of "acting" has always been occupied by individuals who are usually sexually ambivalent at best. Goes w/ the territory. No judgement implied, nor should one be inferred.

To stumble on this is kind of crazy for me; I knew Harry Weiss real well, and oddly a number of years ago I went to a party at Scotty's house. I didn't know about Harry's past until many years later, and it was just about as corrupt as it gets, but as a person, I adored him. I only met Scotty once at that party, he was a nice kinda kooky guy, I wish I'd know about his story then, I would have loved to talk with him about some of it.

Hello Boy Culture, did Scotty ever publish the book about Matt Tyrnauer sex life? I just watched Scotty being interviewed by Skip E. Lowe. Scotty was telling Skip that he was in the process of writing a book about Matt Tyrnauer sex life. So once again, I'm asking did the book ever get published? Scotty also said in the Skip E. Lowe interview that when he died, he was leaving all of his millions to Matt Tyrnauer, in a form of some kind of foundation or something. The feeling I get about Matt Tyrnauer is that he is a real perverted man. As the old saying goes, "What is done in the dark will eventually come to light" so be careful what you.

I, if i may would like to understand why the Anwricans remain so puritan about the homosexual past of her history ? I feel that as a researcher, researching on Anglo-American gay lives 1930 to 1950 , the rural American hidden gay men (depression 1929-1939) And their lives , the armed forces 1942-1945 and the American society,is very hard for us in Europe to assitain documented historical facts on Anerican men . I am very interested in this gentleman's life as it is exactly what i need to understand live in the 1940's in America. Sadly this person has passed away and with him so much precious information . When one considers that most of these American actors were of British and European decent yet in Europe ,it is very hard to obtain Brower's book full service which is not unobtainable for as is the documentary on his life and Hollywood. I believe that these studies should be a Pedagogical resource for all researchers and find it very frustrating that only the Americans are able to have access to this documentary. I hope the director of this documentary may read my comment and answer my questions.
