    Some years back my wife and I were camping in the desert of the UAE. We were sat enjoying a morning coffee whilst taking in the surrounding dunes with the many camels grazing around our location. To our surprise a local lady in her abaya with a wide brim hat, atop the most beautiful Arabian horse appeared over a dune. She must have been headed for our location which had a large tree. Seeing us, she moved off some way and dismounted. She was soon joined by others in a vehicle. Knowing local sensitivities, I did not approach this party but watched as she allowed the horse to run free around our camp site. With a clap of her hands, the horse would return to her. As she was riding out she wished us a good morning and was gone over the dunes. The most memorable moment of our many years in the region.

    I am too, although only half Arab. I am very proud of my heritage. My Jidu and Situ came to this country in the early 1900s. They lived the American Dream, having four of five sons who all served in WWII, the other in Korea. All came home to live their dreams too. I am blessed. I am a horse owner of over 50 years; Arabians have always been my favorite. I've owned both full and half Arabians. @@anniw8444 @Anni W The horses sticking their tongue out and chewing are a natural habit. Them sticking their tongue out and chewing are actually used in training as a form of body language. It's a form of contentment. It also shows acceptance of things in ground training. Some horses also naturally tend to chew on/play with their bits more than others. I had a show mare who even played with a snaffle bit that way.

  • @lizmaslin5258

    @lizmaslin5258

    Жыл бұрын

    As a comment to cruelty of shank bits...while I'm not a fan of them, it is more important to notice the curb chain mechanism. The tighter the curb chain and the longer the shank, the harsher the bit is. Applied by uneducated and/or harsh hands, the more painful will be its effects on the horse's mouth and jaw. Even without a mouthpiece in a bit, e.g., mechanical hackamore, just the interaction between the long shanks and the curb chain, will be a harsh effect on the horse's jaw. A lot of long spanked curb bits do have a snaffle mouth as well as having a roller in the center for relieving stress. Go ride in a western pleasure or western equitation and in the stand up line and you'll hear the sound of crickets--horse's working the "cricket" to relieve stress, boredom, and/or pain. A lot of show jumpers and eventers use long spanked bits for control. It's hard to know where to start on all of these issues and to what degree where does cruelty--intentional or not--crosses the line. I personally have ever used a spade bit once--tradition in the stock horse training of the vaqueros which dictates that the horse be completely trained via a bosal (maybe made of rawhide?) a 2-3 yr process before the horse was moved the spade bit, whose objective was to remain neutral in the horse's mouth. The idea was that the rider used only neck reining for control of the horse. This was hard to by the old, slow way, rather to than yield to quicker, harsher more forceful methods. What a can of worms!! Anyhow, food for thought, no pun intended...

Im not suggesting they sore these Arabians in the same way but all of them seem distressed they're kept way behind the vertical not to mention the 5 inch shank bits the riders are exerting incredible forces with in the mouth of these majestic creatures and then at around 4 min there's a grey who's tongue is obviously protruding and is distressed but yes the garb was intricate and beautiful so that's important right and then that grey goes on to get second place?! 🥴

    Is it normal to keep your horses head SO far behind the vertical? Almost every horse in this class had protruding parotid glands indicating this happens constantly, riding a horse and keeping his head so far behind the vertical causes them to canter in this way bc their spinal vertebrae are compressed, it causes the shorter hind steps and giant front goose steps. Is this the primary look these shows are going for? 🤔

    Arabians also hold their tails that high naturally. That’s one of the things I love about them! In the cruel practice with Tennessee Walking horses, “ the Big Lick” gaite competitions, their tail tendons are cut , then the tail is held high with the harness. People are trying to get “the Big Lick” made illegal . I know about it because I’m from Tennessee , and Tennessee Walking horse shows are common there, both the normal beautiful natural gaite and that horrible “big lick” gaite abomination.

    The action on many of those horses looks unnaturally high. An Arab should have a long and low action and I suspect that what is happening here is that the horses are being bent at the neck rather than being collected which will get the head down but with a curve in the neck. Another reason for the action is that they may have been trained to produce the high stepping action by the use of weighted shoes.

    I wish the horsemanship was being taken into consideration as well. The dapple gray Arabian was regularly showing signs of pain :( I've spent alotta time with polish racing and show Arabians here in Poland and it was unacceptable to cause a horse so much discomfort.

    Love the outfits. Don’t quite understand what kind of tack is required. Some have double bridles some not. They all have those horrendous bits which arab horses don’t need. They listen no matter what.

  • @MagnificentHorses

    I don't think there are any requirements for the tack. I'm not sure you can say that no Arabian horses require a stronger bit, though. You may be right, but I can't imagine that the owners or riders would use anything more aggressive than needed. And I don't see how the horses can be in pain from them because they would either stop or else start bucking if it were painful. That's how I look at it, anyway.

    Hate the nasty stacked and weighted shoes on some, the naturally shod are a much better, and more kind presentation of the breed. The slo-mo really shows in action how the weighted shoes tear up the horse's lower leg joints. But thank you for making and sharing this video, it's as close as I'll ever get to Scottsdale!!
