laura lee Or an eejit. When I get together with my Scottish mates I end up using their vernacular, especially after a few pints and I was born and raised in Canada. (Auch, see you Jimmy, I’ll do you, mind! or put doon the bucky ye baw bag! are 2 of my favourites.

In my family we've always said "the morn" instead of the morra. Like for example, I'll need to be up early the morn's morning.

I had a visitor this morning and he saw the sign on the door of the smallest room on the top floor. He was the first visitor who knew what a cludgie is. Much better than bog.

Hearing you talk, and I must admit, half of the words, went right over my head. I kept thinking, these are words from Glasgow, not Edinburgh where I grew up. It’s funny, but not hearing these words often or at all. It took me a while on my last visit, to understand people. Especially the Bairns, or wee yin’s. They were talking a mile a minute. But after three or four days, most of the words came back. As did my accent. Which made my landlady laugh. “ Ye sounded like a real Yank, Monday, now ye sound, like ye never left.” At that time, I’d only lived in California for seven years. I hate to think, after 19 years since my last visit, probably take a fortnight now, to understand what people are saying. Thankfully, Scots, can speak English when they have to. Lol Fun video, even though I only got half of it.

@ Shlibber Macshlibber That makes me better. I too knew oxter , didn’t know it was Scottish though. Lol I did visit Aberdeen on one trip back home. Had a BritRailPass. So I used it a lot, from Waverly Station in Edinburgh. But can’t recall many of those words. Thanks for clearing that up.

We never spoke Scots up here, we went from the Gaelic to the Kings English so its not something I'm very familiar with. Bairn, braw, tattie I know but many of the words we use are of Nordic, French or old gaelic origin like bodach(Gaelic) for an old man or petty(French) for toilet

Erin, have you heard the term "oxter guff"? Meaning smelly armpits. Not sure if it's an Ayrshire saying, or more widely used. I love it, very descriptive and insulting.

Here in the north east oxter is used that much I forgot the actual word for it 😂x

Quine is infact pronounced as Queen :) Its a word used mostly up north in the highlands and Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire way

In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania we borrowed your “yin” and say “yinz” instead of “yous” or “y’all”. Our American accent is a bizarre combination of Lowland/Ulster Scots and German. Woot, linguistics!!

This is actually spelt "wean" and said "wee-yin" we use it a lot in the north east of Scotland

Eejit is so commonly used over here, and I use it *so much* xD I swear, every Irish person uses it, there's not one that doesn't. Q for my use of Irish words would be Quare, like Square without the S, it basically means very/really, so you'd say, like, "That's quare good." "That's a quare lot." "You look quare good." "He's quare stupid." xD and then T for me would be Tick, we say Tick, but it's very commonly used around the world, mainly in the likes of the UK and America, except they all say Thick, but it's quite light of an insult over there, whereas here it's actually really offensive, people get really offended and defensive when you call them tick, like "They're quare tick." "Ye tick eejit."

You should have done aye for number one 😂x

Quyne is almost the same in swedish.

Interesting worlds. Like Ireland and Wales English wasn't the first langues of Scotland so a lot of words used in Scotland aren't English in origin; well there is Scots that is influenced by old English. That is English with out any French in it. So if one hears Scots it sound closes to old English. Which there is some You Tube videos on it. Aw yes in the UK and most of the English speaking word z is pronounce as zed were in the U.S it is pronounce as zee. Other pronunciations of “z” you might hear in the English speaking world include: zod, zad, zard, ezod, izzard, and uzzard. As to why people in the United States call “z”, “zee”, it is thought that this is likely simply adopted from the pronunciation of the letters “bee”, “cee”, “dee”, “eee”, “gee”, “pee”, “tee”, and “vee”.
