Scotlands forgotten War of Independence Part 1: King David II and Edward Baliol
In Scotlands forgotten War of Independence Part 1 Scottish history tour guide Bruce Fummey tells more tales from Scotlands history with The Battle of Dupplin Moor, Edward Baliol, David II and Edward III. This is the first in a series of three videos about Scotlands second war of independence
When people think about the Scottish wars of independence they thing of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Edward Longshanks, Braveheart, Outlaw King and all that. It's easy to forget that this wasn't the end of the story. There was Scotland's second war of independence that followed. This is Scotland's story

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As one of Scotland history tour guides people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So from April 2020 I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

I thank you. Let's spread the Gospel of Scotland one video at a rime
These videos are so fascinating. As a Protestant, I think of anything that happened before the church split as "our history" same way, as an American of English and Scottish descent on my mother's side, I figure anything that happened before the 1600s, when my family came to America, is "my history." ;-) It is so amazing to have names like William the Conqueror, King John, etc., and suddenly see them in context to each other, and to Scotland. And you make them so much fun that I keep interrupting the rest of my family to make them list. Thank you for all you do!
I am American but am of Scottish decent. I really enjoy your Scottish history videos
I cannot get enough of your videos!!! Thank you!!!!
Damn man. And your accent just made this video better than all the others. Lol. But seriously, thank you. Huge history buff here. Been writing my own historical fiction, and the wars for independence are a huge source of inspiration.

A great book to read is For The Lion: The Scottish Wars of Independence. When reading it I hated Edward Balliol. No better than his dad..infact even worse. He was a wee weasel that was just Edwards 3rds puppet. Balliol even agreed to annex a chunk of Southern Scotland to Edward 3rd. Thank god his reign was very short & Unsuccessful 🏴
I really enjoy your way of telling these historic stories it's quite comforting. Thank you very much

Thank you again Bruce.....you are the epitome of what KZread should be about. And you make me laugh with your tongue in cheek delivery.....but please don’t shatter my illusions about Edward II and the red hot poker....I so want that to be true! There’s an air of justice to it and he certainly pi**ed off enough of his nobles.

I'm snuggled up ready for a thrilling instalment from Bruce(the Fummey variety) and I'm in a wee happy place learning about Scottish history without the excessive blah about dates(which I'll never remember). Malcom may have had better publicity, but once he won his crown he didn't automatically try to give it to Edward the Confessor.
Suddenly they were a guardian down? You have missed out the most romantic bit! "Douglas threw the heart of Bruce deep into the enemy, telling it to go first as it had always done, and then plunged after it with his knights, shouting the name of his house". THAT is how to lose a guardian.

I'm not Scottish, so can I ask any Scots here if King Edward Balliol is officially acknowledged as a legitimate king of Scotland? Although he lost the war, I believe he was crowned and anointed.

@@ScotlandHistoryTours Edward was thrice the human being David II ever was. David II was an abusive husband who treated his wife (Edward III of England's sister) like dirt. Edward III probably just wanted to protect his sister from such a vile animal.

This was the first time an essentially English army had adopted the formation of dismounted (to stop 'em charging off) men-at-arms in the centre and archers on the wings. It was a battle winning tactic used from then on, for over a hundred years. Since Scots nobles led this army, it means it took Scots to show the English, how to fight :D.

One thing I would like to know is about Robert Burns who inspired his poem Bonnie Jean i've heard and read so many different stories can you clarify when you get a chance. He supposed to be connected to a McMurdo whom he was friendly with and also he had a daughter who's name was Jane or Jean the said lady married a slave traders son

Interesting cheeky thought to end on, but yeah sensible compromises or better still imaginative solutions to keep many happy or at least not disgruntled seem as hard to come by as ever. As an Irishman Scottish independence is not my affair, but seems to me, that one of causes of the desire for independence is how England centric things are in the UK, which to a degree is understandable given the population difference, but the seat of power Westminister is in the South East, furthest from the other UK nations, The monarch the same, the monarch is also The Queen of England, rather than the Queen of The UK or Queen of Britain. Could not some imaginative solution be employed to give another part a bite of the prestige cherry, such as let Edinburgh be the capital city in the 21st century for example. Also tbh the first past the post voting system doesn't help.
@ScotlandHistoryTours

Back in 2012 I thought a federal system would have been the way to go. Indeed the majority of the population of Scotland thought that. We weren't allowed that as an option. Now the majority want independence. How do we find a way to co-operate globally and manage our affairs locally. Way too big a question for a guy with a smartphone and a tripod

@@ScotlandHistoryTours If, and it's a BIG IF, since I'd have to leave my own prejudices and predispositions behind, and put myself in the shoes of a regular Scot, but if I was Scottish, not sure how I would have voted the first time round back in 2014, think I would have been torn, like a lot were I imagine, but pretty sure I'd not be hesitating to vote yes given the opportunity this time.

As a Northern English person I don't really give a hoot what the Scots do, stay or go I don't care. however I can understand the disenchantment with London. I feel it is time to move the capital to somewhere in the mid-lands. The south east dominates too much.

The battle of duplin muir was between a Englisharmy of 2500 with English officers but with a Scottish figurehead (balliol) against potentially 2 Scottish armies of between 10 - 12 thousand in each …..resulting in a huge English victory and proving that against spear men the heavy cavalry must dismount and become heavy infantry which holds the vastly numerically superior Scottish infantry whilst the flanks are exposed to withering longbow assault …..homildon hill outside Berwick was then the scence of a scaling up of this tactic and again a massive English victory…this battle is sometimes referred to as a Scottish battle but that’s utter rubbish….
