SCOTLAND v France Press Conference 10.2.24 - Co-Captain Rory Darge & Head Coach Gregor Townsend.(4K)

Спорт

The game ended controversially with Scotland (for the second week running) having to wait for a TMO decision on a try to end their game. Last week against Wales it wasn't a try, but this week it was - however the decision by referee Nic Berry went against the recommendation of the TMO.
This was the topic of conversation at the Scotland press conference.

The problem is clearly with the protocol when the ref calls ‘no try’ in such circumstances to the TMO, as said TMO believed that evidence of a try had to be 100% certain. This makes it almost impossible to award a try in one of those ‘maul on the line’ situations.

I have said for years that the benefit of the doubt should be given to the attacking team. The current situation simply encourages defenders to jump on board and hide the ball from cameras. In those situations it should be on field try unless the Tmo can provide evidence otherwise

Excellent Press Conference by Rory Darge first time up. Great to talk about the excellent games by Scotland's newest caps. Yes Scotland is building strength in depth. It is really important to give young players the opportunity, this early exposure allows them to progress to the next level.

People saying Scotland need to play better to avoid these situations are absolutely idiotic. Ive even seen people calling them a Tier 2 country. France are phenomenal at the moment and Scotland played excellent against them. There was the occasional error but that's to be expected with some of the younger guys coming through. Probably one of the best matches I've seen regardless of the score.

Correct. All those complaining about the TMO are directing their frustration at the wrong person. The TMO's response was the correct one based on the refs question. But the ref can only call what he sees. He was closer to it than any of us and he saw the ball held up at the end. Once he declared on field decision to be no try, the TMO had to show incontrovertible proof that it was grounded on or over the line, not simply grounded. And no available angle could show it, even though we all know it was most likely a try. It's a kick in the guts for Scotland, but they should never have allowed themselves to be in that position in the first place.

There are failings on two counts. Firstly, the grounding was clear and a try should have been awarded. On the basis that the couldn’t evidence that, then the second offence is by Tuilagi lying over the player preventing clear release. That is a penalty to Scotland and a yellow card, and the question then becomes should a penalty try be awarded?

I understand Scot staff frustration, it was a"lottery" tmo decision we all hate. But... why were they in that situation? France bench dominated the 2nd half and turned the game despite french players fluffing many balls, like on this last minute action on the line. This was a mediocre french team, and Scotland didn't achieve to capitalise on their good 1st half.

My opinion is that yes it was a try and should have been given however, the French were under performing and Scotland were a lot better and again shouldn’t have been in that position. And I don’t know what’s wrong with GT atm coz that’s two weeks in a row where he reluctantly used the bench! That was the main issue why wales scored 4 tries last week and this week again with extremely tired forwards having to go so deep into the second half! Louis BB try was so soft! To easy for a player with such speed and skill! Ffs GT

Close game with two teams playing very average rugby. Final Result could have gone either way without being unjust at all. For what Scotland had produced in the 2nd half they can mostly blame themself for losing that game and not the ref... As Finn rightly said If Scotland had truly deserved to win that game this last call should not have mattered

Scotland were just on the end of a very harsh but technically correct decision. We all know it was a try, and even the TMO knew. It was clear that he wanted to give it, but once the ref declared that his decision was no try, it meant that only a camera angle which clearly showed BOTH the ball being grounded AND grounded over the line would be sufficient to overturn that decision. There was no such angle available. The best that we could say is that it was almost certainly grounded, but where exactly was impossible to definitively prove. If the ref had simply asked try or no try, the TMO would certainly have said try. The only conspiracy is the one where Scotland contrive to shoot themselves in the foot over and over and over again. They have so much talent, it just boggles my mind that they can't pull it all together and string some consistent performances together. They were clearly the better team out there today, but they just played with their food and allowed France to come back into it and steal it at the end. I am not Scottish and even I was tearing my hair out. I can only imagine how Scotland fans must feel with this team.
