Scotland's Hardest Summit: Knowing When To Bail on the Inn Pinn

An evening stroll up to what is technically Scotland's hardest Munro summit or at least the one that requires some climbing to get to the summit. An improving weather forecast gave us hope but did we make it..... The Inaccessible Pinnacle on the Cuillin Ridge on Skye is a basalt column of moderate difficulty. Last time I was here it was warm, sunny and dry with no wind... today was a little different!

Weather wasnt promising whole route up and we were fully prepped to retreat but window of calm and views just opened up on Sgurr Dearg and we seized the window successfully. I didnt get a chance to really enjoy the scramble. Too busy assisting the lass freaking out on the rope in front of me. We all cracked it though. Very memorable. Thanks for reminding me with all your banter. Fantastic

My fist trip to the Inn Pinn was in similar conditions - beautiful in the valley with clouds on the summits. Never having been on the Cuillin before, and armed with more confidence than ability we headed up and into the mist. Up and up; reached ridge and followed a path along until we saw the Inn Pinn looming ahead. Then climbed the front - up the "v diff" which was a wet soapy rock scary horror of a lead with pretty much zero protection until near the top. But, hey, only a v. diff. No wind, though. Got to top, seconded up my partner and we abbed off. Hurrah. Excellent fun. Then the proper fun started - trying to get back down in the clag. Retrace your steps - how hard can it be??? Had 2 goes and lost paths, ending up on steep scree. Then managed to tag on to the back of a guided group after pretty much shouting for help when we heard people passing in the mist. Dropping out under the roof of clouds not too long later it became apparent where we'd gone wrong, but it was a proper lesson in how to not be safe in an unfamiliar environment. In the mist. Amazing place though and have been back a few times since.

Really interesting video. I did the Inn Pinn in 2007 with my son .we are decent scramblers but fr this we needed some real climbing expertise so we hired the late great Martin Moran. Weather wise, our day was a carbon copy of yours....fine for about 1500’ but deteriorating as we arrived at the Inn Pinn to full clag, strong winds and about 15 degrees colder than at sea level. I was rather hoping that Martin would call it off but he decided to give it a go. I was in the middle of the rope. In the conditions, I was so terrified that I can remember nothing of the climb as I shivered my way up . This was followed by possibly the ugliest abseil the Inn Pinn has ever seen. Throughout the proceedings , Martin was fantastic. Just wish The weather had allowed us to see what we had achieved. Keep the video’s coming Murray.
