Scoring the Action in Kid Icarus: Uprising [Patron Request]

Музыка

In this Patron Request video I take a look at how Yuzo Koshiro scores a level in Kid Icarus: Uprising, as suggested by patron Lars Flyger. Check out his video on the La Mulana soundtrack here: • Overanalyzing La-Mulan... I've never played La Mulana, but I really enjoyed the video!

Amazing channel 8-bit! I remember when a certain teacher at Berklee College of Music in the Film Scoring department laughed and said, "No thank you!" when a student asked why the school didn't have any classes designated to video game scoring. Your channel alone can prove that teacher wrong.

I mean, let's be honest, KI:U is an outlier that's pretty much a film score so I don't think this video proves that it isn't redundant to have both a VG music course and a film music course. His others videos do though.

In 2012, I took an online certificate course through Berklee that involved 3 classes. The certificate was for Composition for Video games and Other Media. There was a music theory class, one for film orchestration, and the 3rd one had to do with video games specifically. We even did a project that involved some very basic coding in Origin.

Learning music theory / basically anything explained in this video should be quite a hard thing to learn. As someone who works with music, although I never have to get complicated about it, I still barely understand music theory. Not that I really need a lot of it, I'm basically doing the thing I shouldn't do... so... yeah. You know, looping unlooped songs...

God, I love this soundtrack. Kid Icarus Uprising is one of my favorite games, and it was awesome seeing an analysis of it's incredible soundtrack. Now, I'm just over here wishing there could be more in-depth analyses of some of the game's other flight themes, like the blatant Star Wars homage of Chapter 13: The Lunar Sanctum, or the brilliant introduction to the Aurum in Chapter 15: Mysterious Invaders.

  • @ChazzzyF

    @ChazzzyF

Richard Higinbotham Aurum Island is an incredible song as well. If you asked me to pick a top 5 songs in the game, I couldn't give you an order, but the 5 songs would be Aurum Island, Mysterious Invaders, Dark Pit (the flight version), Destroyed Skyworld and Lightning Battle. But even that leaves out a lot of my favorites, like Silence of the Moon, everything in Chapter 18, the Space Pirate Ship, the Chaos Vortex, the flight song from the Seafloor Palace (starts with a fantastic remix of the Overworld theme). It's just such a good soundtrack.

Awesome job! So glad you did this, Kid Icarus: Uprising has such an overlooked soundtrack, with so much to admire. You could probably make a whole series on each chapter alone and how it plays off the motifs established in previous games or in the game itself (not to say you should necessarily). A few things I noticed while watching: -measures 126-133 use a harmonic and rhythmic motif used frequently in "The Lunar Sanctum," of which is a part of the forces of nature section of the game, used as a unique bit of foreshadowing -the "1-trip-let-2-- a" rhythm is a rhythmic motif used quite often as a general theme for Pit, originally from the melody of the underworld theme in the original game (at least the way I look at it) -Maybe I'm looking to far into it, but a bunch of this songs chromaticism I see as a reference to one of Viridi's motifs (the one that starts this very chapter, in fact) The game is so effective in using themes and motifs that during the credits it does a sort of recap that could get you to remember the story through the music alone (although the pictures and voice acting does help when you're playing :p )

This video got me thinking: which pieces were written first, the flight or ground stages? I noticed a lot of recurring leitmotifs throughout the soundtrack, and now that I've seen the cinematic approach the composers have taken with the on-rails sections, I'm wondering if those themes were written first and then co-opted for use in the other parts of the game. For example, the melody from the beginning of the song you looked at in this video is used as a general theme for Viridi and her Forces of Nature (being found in other levels involving her as well as the menu music when she becomes your celestial guide). That leads me to question if this piece was made first to match the action in Chapter 12 and then used elsewhere, or if Koshiro chose to arrange Viridi's theme in a way that would fit the gameplay and dialogue of this stage.

Man, I love Uprising. It's such an underappreciated and underrated game. We need another Kid Icarus. But Nintendo will never let Sakurai stop working in Smash.

Fantastic analysis. I loved the soundtrack to this game even though I wouldn't describe it as singable like most looping tunes.

Huge fan of Uprising. One of my top 3DS games for sure. Without a doubt the soundtrack is a huge part of my love for this game.

The reset bomb arc was easily one of the most breathtaking moments I've ever experienced in a game, and MAN does the non-repeating score boost that experience to 11...

You sound like the game theory guy... ARE YOU!? MAYBE YOU SECRETLY HAVE TWO CHANNELS THAT YOU'RE MAINTAINING PHENOMENALLY WELL. Well, that's just a theory... A GAME THEORY. All jokes aside I very much appreciated this video. I loved the OST of Kid Icarus Uprising.

Okay, I think I've got my request for a future video of yours (once I join your patreon, of course). I'd love an analysis of Dancing Mad/One-Winged Angel, and how they adapt to the player's progress through the battle.

love the vids! But I wonder, will you ever make a videos on how to approach composing some game music from scratch, as opposed to doing analysis vids?

id love to see how to approach composing in general as well. just something to keep the channel fresh. some other things id like to see would be tutorials for composing and song analysis in general (outside of games), but i dont think itll fit the channel.

Analysis is really the best way to learn about composition. There isn't a secret formula for writing music. You can learn the technical stuff and get feedback on your work, but beyond that you learn the most from dissecting other peoples' work. These videos ARE composition lessons.

but what if you do not have memorized all the techniques like chordprogressions and their corresponding associations? Say you want to achieve X with your music, how do you go about doing it?

  • @rustydogg

fair point. i was essentially saying was that there should be more series rather than one, but i dont really know what that could be... i suppose analyses are a good start though.

Well you can learn a lot about how people achieve different goals and how different chord progressions work in this channel. This video, for instance, can teach you how the mode mixture of a major IV chord in a minor key sounds heroic and a whole bunch of other ways to use harmony to create different feelings. The Dark Souls video teaches you how to expand on an idea to make a song (which is one of the most important things to be able to do in composition), the Earthbound video has lots of helpful advice for writing melodies, etc. He's doing what most theory and composition classes in college do, except instead of using Bach and Beethoven, he's using Kondo and Uematsu.

If memory serves (which, knowing myself it probably doesn't), when you pause the game during a flying section, the music stops too. But in a ground section, it continues in the background faded
