Scooter Engine and Transmission Oil - Can you use regular oil? Is the trans fill hole the oil level?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Changing the engine and transmission oil on a 50cc scooter and answer the questions of whether you can use regular engine oil, and if if the transmission fill hole is the oil level or if you have to measure the gear oil before you put it in. Manufacture recommends 10W-30 engine oil and 85W-140 gear case oil for this scooter. Recommended engine oil change interval is every 1000km (~600 miles) though I have a tendency to push it out a bit longer. Gear oil should probably be changed every 5000 miles.

    Some people say the engine oil on a motorcycle or scooter should be checked with the dip stick screwed all the way in, and some say it should be checked with the dip stick resting on top without screwing it in. Which is the correct way?

    One of my friends recommended that I change the gy6 engine oil when I just bought the motorcycle and use conventional oil, not synthetic 10w-30 10w-40, for the first 500 miles to help the engine break in, an then use synthetic oil is this true? Thanks I bought with 0 miles That's what the odometer said, I don't know if you can reset the odometer, now has 9 miles it has an 800 miles warranty it does come with a manual they recommend 10w-30 but it is hard to find locally, and I don't know the quality of the oil right now, "after 5 months sitting on the store " but I do know that it was delivered to the dealer September 9, 2023 it , What do you recommend me to do?

    Hi Kim! There's not really a special 'procedure" for putting a scooter away during the winter (in fact I used to drive mine through the winter). Before letting it sit for a while though, I'd consider doing an oil change, and then running it for a little bit with fresh oil, the idea being to cover the internals with good fresh oil. Second and most importantly is to fill the fuel tank all the way up (preferably with no-ethanol gas) and add a bit of gas stabilizer (Sta-Bil). If you have a manual fuel shut off, make sure it's shut off, and it you're feeling really adventurous you can drain the carb bowl. Throw it on a battery float charger, and you'll be about as good as you can get! I hope this helps!

    i still wonder about something related to your video. i have an xmax 300 that states you can use 85w gl3 or 10w30 motor oil. i have searched for the answer for this question: gl3 is outdated and hard to find except for redline mt85. but won’t motor oil shear to quickly and also there aren’t any yellow metals or such in the bikes gearbox. wouldn’t synthetic 75/90 gl 4/5 work just fine without causing any damage? i’m happy to use motor oil but i ride many many miles of high speed travel each day. i sure would feel better if i could use 75/90 synthetic. currently i use stalube 80/90 gl4. it’s not synthetic and seems thicker in comparison to engine oil, i’m pretty sure it’s a good gear lube but could i use something better?

    Sta-lube is the only true gl4 I've found. I talked to Lucas Oil tech support about it and they couldn't recommend their gear oil for something calling for gl3.

    I’ve a 2001 two stroke vino and the service manual says to use 10w30, it does not give you other options. Do I stick to it or switch to gear oil? And if so what weight should I use? Thanks!

    Hi! sorry for the late reply. I would stick to what the manual says - especially if it's under warranty. If you are going to switch, a lighter gear oil like 75w90 would probably also work. I would think that with the 10w30 it would likely recommend changing the oil out more frequently, since it doesn't have the additives to resist breakdown under gear pressure as well. That said, the lighter oil might provide better lubrication at certain speeds depending on the gearbox setup.

    My take is that if you use a high quality branded 100% synthetic oil you can go THINNER… By doing so the oil will reach more engine parts and lubricate better (and likely give slightly increased power/fuel efficiency. For example am running 0W-20 in my 150cc class Honda engine and it seems very happy with thinner oil

    Which bolt? if it was the fill bolt then likely yes, if it's the drain bolt then there's oil in there, but a little less now lol. When in doubt, I'd give it a quick change.

    My scooter have a cvt transmission should i use cvt oil or normal gear oil? Help please

  • @TheAfterWorkGarage

    @TheAfterWorkGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    The CVT transmission in most scooters happens at the belt/pulley system before the final drive gears, and doesn't use oil. The oil I changed here was the gear oil for the final drive gears, and can be regular gear oil. (this scooter also has a CVT)

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi sorry for the late reply! I'd definitely recommend going with whatever the manufacture recommendation is, but I'd think 20W50 would be reasonable as long as you kept up with oil changes. The advantage of gear oil is that it has additives to resist breakdown under pressure between gear teeth. A scooter (especially a 50cc scooter) doesn't generate all that much of an extreme environment, so I'd think most oils would be ok, however the manufactured recommended oil is always going to be better.

    I wouldn't use atf as gear oil. It's much thinner, and may not stand up to the high pressures and shear forces of a final drive.

    Can you use car transmission fluid instead of gear oil!

  • @TheAfterWorkGarage

    @TheAfterWorkGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    I would try to use gear oil if you could. Transmission fluid is thinner and has additives in it that help it act as more of a hydraulic fluid, where as gear oil clings to gears better (it's not actively pumped around).
