Scooby-Doo! and the Monster of Cultural Appropriation | Monster of Mexico

Фильм және анимация

*READ the pinned comment before angrily commenting - the title is a joke in reference to the villains of the film, not toward the film itself. Imagine how tired I am from people not watching the video and commenting about how I'm stupid to be offended by the movie when it's a half hour video talking about how much I love the movie despite other people usually not caring for it.*
In this video, we take a long awaited look at one of my childhood favorite Scooby-Doo! movies and the goofy approach it has to the world of Mexican culture, as well as the history of the Scooby-Doo! direct-to-video films that led to it.

You guys stay messy in the comments so this is another one that needs a pinned I guess. 😭 The title is satirical and fun, like the video, referencing the villains and not have movie. I'm not crying about or accusing the movie of "cultural appropriation" or saying it's "problematic" or anything. I love this movie. This is a half hour video I made because I really care about this movie and want to spread the love. You don't have to call me names or stupid for trying to ruin it as a terrible American. We are on the same side. Relax and have some fun. And please stop fighting each other while we are here 😭

If one watches a comedic video with jokes and gets upset that there are jokes, the video was probably not going be funny for that particular viewer regardless of a fun title in the same tone as them.

Hi, Puertorican born and raised on the island, and I wanted to say that you did a great job explaining the lore and myth of the Chupacabra and how it originated in Puerto Rico. I remember it being a Puertorican pop-culture phenomenon with people both being genuinely scared and fascinated by the creature as well as mocking the silliness of it all. Local mayors even went as far as to stage major hunts for the Chupacabra, one of them being Chemo Soto, which was later nicknamed Chemo Jones (as a parody of Indiana Jones) because he was set on finding the creature and proving its existence. There were many songs written about it and it was parodied on Puertorican TV all the time. So I appreciate that you took the time to explain the true origins of the creature. Also funny how the movie has a creature that originated in Puerto Rico yet sets it in Mexico and has two actresses that are native Puertoricans voicing Mexicans... Guess this proves the old mantra of Latinos = Mexicans, am I right? LAWL . But seriously good job providing the context for this movie!

As a Mexican person myself, I do like that the gang went to Mexico. However, some parts could have been improved or touched upon. For instance, how did Fred, a teen/emerging adult get in touch with Alejo, a grown man with a family and family business? Secondly, where are the gang's parents in general? Do Fred's parents know that Fred has been speaking to a grown man over the Internet? The Chupacabra could have been replaced with something else from Mexican folklore.

I think it’s just that countries try and replicate another’s myths or history or whatever and just fall short. But honestly it’s fun to sometimes play along with their mistakes. My favorite example is how American westerns (cowboys and the Wildwest) originated as a movie genre in Italy. That explains why they portray frontier history so poorly. But westerns are fun movies that’s why they managed to do well in the country they were originally appropriated from. Or another favorite of mine is how many Japanese eat KFC on Christmas cause a commercial made them believe it’s an American tradition.

You know, they never really DID clarify whether or not those statues were animatronics or magical. If they were the former, I'd imagine Mr. Smiley lost a lot of cash making the enormous stone golem and flying dragon only for them to destroy themselves. And we didn't see any wires or metal inside of the golem as it crumbled, so HOW did that thing even move in such a realistic fashion? How does the stone dragon fly if it's made out of.. stone! I don't know if you read this, I really had my doubts about watching the video, I was afraid that it was just another gringo getting offense for the Mexicans. However you did a lot of research, I must admit there are a lot of things I didn't know about the chupacabra, mostly because I never get too interested or care too much, and I only got to see two news about it in real life. However, there are other things that I don't agree with, like calling Fred or the gang "appropriate to the culture" by wearing charro hats, or "sombreros" as you call it in the US, and guitars, we literally sell those things to foreigners for that they wear it among other traditional clothes, that's the point. And as someone who is learning another language, I liked the detail that Fred made a mistake where to put the ñ, when you learn a language it is normal to have mistakes like that, especially with letters that are foreign to your mother tongue. The only thing I could say was culture appropriation was looting the tombs, the design of the catacombs and the clothes, it doesn't bother me, it's just that they didn't dress like that at all, but it was funnier than anything. It really is one of my favorite movies I watched it all the time on CN, and it never bothered me that the chupacabra didn't look anything like in the legend, mostly because among the researchers no one could agree on his appearance, even if the more popular versions looked like aliens, I remember discussions about that, so I think it's not bad if they went for their own version of what the monster looks like. Overall very good video. Here in Mexico I always believed that the legend had appeared from the north of the country, not from Puerto Rico XD there were conspiracies that said it was a US project or weapon, since most cases happened between the border of Mexico and the US, at least those that I heard.

To be fair to the golden retriever, if we're talking about the movie I think we're talking about, she IS an extraterrestrial. We don't know her age, we don't know the laws of the planet (and whether the laws are applied everywhere on the planet) where she and the other one comes from. I don't know about other folks here, but I know I want to see them make another appearance.

The funny thing is, if they would have switched the design of their El Chupacabra and the Yowie from the legend of the vampire and reworked both scripts into an Australian Bigfoot and a Mexican or Puerto Rican vampire monster thing as the El Chupacabra would have been much more accurate.

I'd like to do them someday! I haven't watched any (except for Billiam if he talked about them, though I don't remember if so) but I've seen other people have done videos on one or all of them so I'd like to make sure I have something I really want to say on them before I get to them! The three movies I've done solos for I made sure to have a specific intent or vision for before I did them, which I try to do for everything, and I love those to varying degrees so I want the same for them.

So fun fact about the website the old man tells Fred to visit, I decided to look it up myself as a joke. And when I entered it into Google, I took me to a Warner Brothers website where it said the content was unavailable, leading me to believe they actually may have made it a real website at some point until the content became unavailable.

Honestly I really like scooby doo and am mexican myself. So honestly thought it was cool they were in mexico. But also this movie.... actually honestly idk what to say that doesn't sound dumb to my young adult thoughts now. But yea was a kid and I don't take to many old cartoons to seriously because it's mostly "oh that's cool" moments from when I was younger. Now I just have the better skill to critics them now because there's alot of thing's I can look back on. Unless I want to just be happy with what was amusing.

I think Nicole did a better job at voicing Velma again, because at least in my mind, Velma has always sounded like an older woman. Even in the original cartoons, they always got voice actors that sounded so mature. I love the OG voices though!

I'm Puerto Rican, my friend is Mexican and Nahautl, and this movie was a dumb, good time. It's been years since either of us saw it last so we recognized and appreciated the satire and good intentions but honestly it was hard not to receive psychic damage whenever something cringey happened, whether if it was the characters' or movie's fault. Like, it was still funny but we were in a little pain. Velma desecrating and full-on actually robbing ancient native Azteca graves absolutely took us out though, we had to pause for 20 minutes to recover. my friend called the plan's immediate failure karma much like aglets and Phineas and Ferb, I credit this movie for teaching me what a tilde is called

As a kid, I loved all the scooby doo movies. If I had to say tho, this one was my least favorite because as a kid I already knew what a chupacabra was and I was a bit disappointed that it looked different. I did hear from a friend that they should have instead called it the Sisimito or Sisimite. After watching this, I looked up the name and it literally described the monster from the movie and even says it's nickname was the Mexican Bigfoot. Go figure. If anyone has any info on the myth definitely let me know

The whole movie features classic HB sound effects and music cues throughout! On top of the classic cast. Part of why it succeeds as a throwback to the original so well after the franchise took a step back from that.

🫶🏻 If I ever find something to actually say about those worth making a video with, I'll definitely do them then. Covering those for the sake of doing them without having something new to bring when there are already so many great videos saying so much wouldn't serve much purpose, so I would only want to do it then. The video I've been writing next technically does fall into that era of content, however!

Nah what made me annoyed was when they literally just made it Bigfoot and called it El Chupacabra. Even Velma, who’s supposed to be the smart one, called it “Mexican Bigfoot”. Ngl that ticked me off as a kid and makes me more angry as an adult.

7:41 as I am from Maine every time my state is mentioned I must point it out But also very odd for a chupicabra (srry if I spelled it wrong) sighting to be in Maine I know cryptid people aren’t really on the realistic side but habitat difference wise to where their origins are it’s very odd (I mostly like when people turn cryptids into more of a speculative biology thing because that’s what I find interesting)

It's definitely strange that people thought they saw it there of all places. One of the most obvious places where it was probably something as easily explainable as one of the other wildlife. How it turned into people thinking they saw this in particular is the real mystery.
