i think what it meant was like, in a close range fight, that sword isnt useful when defending, just attacking only. But if its not a fight, it can disperse and be used as a shield. I guess thats what it means.

it might also be because assassin seven (and maybe former wielders of the sword, if there are?) would use it primarily to attack and kill, and not to defend other people. so it must’ve been shocking seeing an assassin choose to use a deadly sword to protect someone else, when he could have lunged in and killed the monk instantaneously i guess
