Scientists Say We Already Live in a 2D Universe

Ғылым және технология

You know that a long time ago people believed the Earth was flat, right? Now we’re well aware that it’s more or less a sphere, and it seems ridiculous to think otherwise when there are so many hard facts proving it. But what if those people of the past were actually… right? It turns out they could be, just not in the sense we thought about it.
Our brain is a highly complex thing, and science has not yet fully explained how it works. We know, however, that it exists in 3D, meaning that we perceive objects from three different perspectives: length, width, and height. But a physicist from the University of California in Davis, James Scargill, has shared a theory that 2D universes can exist and even support life...
TIMESTAMPS:
What are 2D universes 1:05
Arguments against this idea 2:27
We live in a huge hologram? 😵 4:29
What's the shape of our Universe? 5:18
Our brains can easily mess up with us 7:09
#universe #2D #brightside
SUMMARY:
- Well, the thing is, since our brain can only think of things in a three-dimensional way, it can’t hold the idea of a two-dimensional space being real.
- Initially, Dr. Scargill wanted to test the philosophical concept that a universe can only exist if there’s life to observe it.
- Dr. Scargill did some complex calculations and was surprised to find out that, hypothetically, life can exist in such universes.
- About his other general theory of relativity, Albert said that moving objects with mass create a curve in space-time, pulling other objects nearby towards them.
- And Dr. Scargill’s calculations show just that: there could be a gravitational field in 2D space, so the first argument is invalid - theoretically, at least.
- Dr. Scargill argues here that there are planar graphs that have properties like neural networks.
- Many mathematicians believe that our very own universe is two-dimensional itself. It’s called a holographic principle, and its main idea is that the universe is essentially 2D, and it looks 3D to us because its image is overlaid onto a cosmic horizon.
- Let’s go back in history and meet our ancestors, the ancient humans. You know cave paintings, right? If you saw them, then you realize that ancient artists knew nothing about perspective.
- The people of the past naturally didn’t want to adopt new and radical ideas about our world, and they preferred to see it as flat.
- Our brains can easily mess up with us. The thing is, whatever we see, hear, smell, touch, or taste is not really an actual object - it’s our subjective perception of it.
- So many humans, so many views of the world. And there are literally no two worlds that are completely identical. This is just crazy, but it kind of makes you believe we could all be living in a two-dimensional space, only seeing it as 3D.

I love this whole theory but it just doesn’t go by our own definition of 2D I feel like 3D is just a different version of 2D but both 2D and 3D universes hold the same shape. Whilst the universe is flat the atoms on it are set in weird ways that aren’t exactly 2D but are close. The universe isn’t 2D nor is it completely 3D, it’s a mix of both but we just call it 3D because it’s the easiest way we can understand it.

Sometimes, in my head, when I imagine this theory, I imagine it a little differently.. When I imagine that it's flat, for some reason, I imagine a flat plane folded and twisted in infinite directions, to create depth.. There are solids and non-solids, some of it you can move through, some of it you can't.. But anything can still theoretically be altered in order to open any number of dimensions anywhere on that plane. Does anyone understand what I'm picturing here?

Don't confuse 2D with flat though. It's hard for us to imagine true 2D, even graphene is 1atom thick in the third dimension and even an imaginary square we "view" from a viewpoint in a third dimension some distance away. If a thing is truly 2d it doesn't exist in the 3d dimension it's entirely invisible.

A tesseracts (4d) shadow is a cube. A cubes (3d) shadow is a square. A squares (2d) shadow is a point. And a point is a singularity. Starting from 4d to 3d, the higher dimension can “see” inside/around/through the other from all angles because each subsequent dimension is contained within the preceding. So… we are 3d beings living in a 3d world and therefore cannot/do not experience the “see” that a 4d would on our dimension.

Or let’s say blind people wouldn’t they be able to feel it in 2D? I’m sure they can tell difference in shapes by touching 3 dimensional objects. Our universe could be 2D but I think the objects in it are most likely 3D.

@@BRIGHTSIDEOFFICIAL Well ,i was just joking by saying 99% of things but, lets say there are few things which i dont understand and which are not because of the video but because of i having less knowledge in astronomy and physics ,,and ,thankyou so much for replaying to me,, The thing which i find most difficult to understand is, : how can our brain perceive 3d things which are actually 2d , and also if the world is flat and 2d ,how are we seeing things coming from above and below i mean if it is a 2d world and the universe is flat then everything should just come straight and nothing should come/move in the vertical axis we are seeing because already there are two dimensions ,the straight axis on which we are moving/seeing things , and the horizontal axis, and which is enough for a 2d universe and then there should not be anything moving in the vertical axis (if the world is 2d) ,BUT it is there we see things moving up and down coming inbetween and that means there is a 3rd dimension and the world is not 2d but 3d but you mentioned about our brain perceiving 3d things which are actually 2d and thats the thing i couldn't understand at all , i mean how ????thankyou

If the pencil in your example lacked one of the dimensions, it wouldn’t be flat like a drawing. The drawing is 3 dimensional - the paper and the graphite on the paper is 3 dimensional. Nothing can exist in only 2 dimensions, not even a “flat” drawing. Very misleading.

Gotta love these videos that gloss over theories and principles with no distinction or substance. Also, the drawing example only shows the complexity of portraying an illusion of 3D in 2D. I don’t think it really says anything about spatial cognition in early humans.

We create our own universe through our subconscious and conscious mind. Too deep topics make me question if the world is even real, are we on simulation or are the people around e real. It makes me feel lost at times if I am even real. Who else feel the same way? I feel anxious and lost at times when I feel like who are the people are me and if I'm just playing a role here?

On a recent Ted Talk video they said they pointed 60 telescopes to the sky, at the same time, to the same destination in order to view a black hole. Modern science says our Earth is rotating at 1 thousand miles per hour, while orbiting the Sun at 66,600 miles per hour, and hurtling through space at I'm not sure how many miles per hour. If this is true how were they able to take the photographs with the telescopes?

If our brain is 3-D how is it not 2-D also if the universe and Earth was flat how aren't we feeling it flat even so our brain is making us think it's 3-D and 2-D is not the absence of 3-D because that doesn't make sense but if it was everything would be 2-D because 3-D wouldn't be existed and that's a fact.

What if the three dimensions we perceive to make up our universe actually be, 1. Time, 2. Distance/ space, 3. Life/ consciousness. Based on that theory, maybe there might be a fourth dimension we ignored, gravity. Just a random, out of the box, idea.
