Scientists say they can cut HIV out of cells | BBC News
Scientists say they have successfully eliminated HIV from infected cells, using Nobel Prize-winning Crispr gene-editing technology.
Working like scissors, but at the molecular level, it cuts DNA so "bad" bits can be removed or inactivated.
The hope is to ultimately be able to rid the body entirely of the virus, although much more work is needed to check it would be safe and effective.
Existing HIV medicines can stop the virus from replicating but not eliminate it.

@@putradalopes9414 Scientists managed to eliminate HIV from cells by gene editing technology. It consists of delivering an enzyme into a cell that will cut specifically the virus. The experiment only took place in cells and some animals but it still wasn't used in humans or primates. There is hope that in the future this will get rid of the HIV virus for good. Nowadays, medicines can only inactivate and stop the virus from replicating but they don't eliminate it. There are billions of cells that carry the virus and it's not sure how many they have to eliminate to cure people from AIDS. That's the main problem right now, to understand the percentage they need to eliminate. They don't know if even only 1% of sick cells survive, will be enough to reactivate and cause AIDS again and to not eliminate the virus for good.

Rip the millions people lose their life from this horrible virus that 4 decades now trouble 😢 the people, and stole so many young life's too soon, stigmatized even more people and families of those that carried the HIV. When I was in 8th grade back in 1998, we had to go to a mass sex education class with hundreds of other 8th graders. They showed graphic images of what could potentially happen if you did not use condoms. I’m 40 now, and those images are still burned into my brain. I only had unprotected sex while in long term relationships. I’m so thankful for that education especially as a gay man.

CRISPR is being used to treat sickle cell which is amazing but if you look at the details it is not easy or simple. It's not a pill but a complex series of very invasive and difficult treatments. If we start developing multiple CRISPR treatments it would become much more accessible overtime. Also compared to PrEP this would be much more effective and a single treatment rather than a lifetime so the cost in America would probably be higher but most places would want the cheaper treatment for their citizens.

@@besmart2350 Covid was not "so harmless". Seven million people died from it in just a few years compared to forty million AIDS deaths over a period of forty years. And AIDS got plenty of attention, especially before any treatments existed. Thanks to modern anti-viral medications, only 630,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses worldwide in 2022 compared to 1.3 million in 2010 and 2 million people in 2004. Most of those deaths occurred in areas where treatment was hard to come by. Both diseases are still being studied.

@@DavidLS1 bro I felt sick from it for only 1 day, like a regular cold/flue and all my family members got well quickly, what are you talking about. Anti-viral medication comes with many side effects, ruins your kidneys. the virus never gets out of your system anyways and comes back as soon as you forget to take the medication. the overhyped virus was easily destroyed by the immune system of healthy individuals. the truly scary virus destroys your immune system and you can't fight other illnesses well including the overhyped virus no matter who you are and how strong your immune system is except some rare people with certain mutations. i took aciclovir anti viral tablet just as an experiment and felt dizzy. imagine taking such a serious medication for the rest of your life. in my opinion our society overreacted to the weak virus and underestimates and doesn't take seriously enough the real threats which are STD's which cause much more suffering worldwide. just read the comments of those infected by it here in this comment section, they can't take it anymore its a pure nightmare for them
