So I took out my copy of On the Origin of Species. I have a printing of the 6th edition from 1872. On the Imperfection of the Geological Record is actually the tenth chapter in that edition. If the original copy has it as the nineth, then that citation is still wrong in failing to specify the edition and actually citing the first edition in terms of the date given. It's not wrong purely on the merit of the chapter number.

I once saw a video where this came up, and the author said they responded with "Yes. So is gravity." Followed by dropping a piece of paper. It stuck in my mind for a much later date. At this much later date, I was having a chat with an acquaintance in the school car park as we waited for our kids to finish school (he was one of the few other Dads who did the school run - most people doing that were the Mums or Grannies). How things got onto evolution I'm unsure, but it may well have been him saying something about humans not being designed for x,y,z (because he is very deep in creationism), and me responding saying it was more that we didn't evolve that way. He told me that evolution was only a theory, so I pulled my keys out of my pocket and dropped them, then said "So's gravity." Had I come up with it on my own, I would have been very proud of myself. As it sstans, I could only be very amused and pleased that I remembered the video well enough to do it.

What they were trying to communicate was that we don’t know if these exact species were part of the line of descent, it is far more likely that they were more like aunts or uncles rather than the direct ancestor, but it is impossible to prove that they definitely were or were not the direct ancestor, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t helpful or don’t prove the evolution of birds from early dinosaurs, for exampl you can still get a lot of information from a person by studying their aunts or uncles even though they aren’t their parents.

Speaking as a professional geologist, I can say without a doubt that, Yes, the geological record is incomplete. That is due to the incredibly changing nature of geological deposits and the forces that act upon them to either change, remove or redeposit them. I can think of very few places where there exists a complete, or relatively complete, geological record. And even then, this record would only apply to the area in which it is located! But even after all of that, the amount of fossil evidence that exists despite the incompleteness of the geological record is truly astounding. Even if you just count the "real" fossils and not the trace fossils that exist in almost every strata of sedimentary rock, there is a staggering amount of evidence out there. These yutzes need to actual pull their noses out of their bibles and actually look at the world around them for a change.

@@tony-te7gd Not just entirely possible, people in programming have used similar systems before, even in binary! Like the tape in a Turing machine. The problem is the argument that dude made relies entirely on an order of operation and interpretation as strict and rigid as his world views seem to be. Consider a simple queue buffer that passes messages. Certain workers can pick up different sections of the original message that is buffered onto the queue completely out of order, then based on the segment the worker picked up, do work and perhaps set or unset (new) flags. Those flags may then control a different flow in future messages. The context in which the message is interpreted as well as the segments that potentially preceded or succeeded it are relevant. Just like in natural language! E.g.: "Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana". Is it easy to setup? No, but if you have millions of generations/iterations to try stuff out, you'll eventually stumble across a solution. Sorry I realised I'm ranting at this Seegert fellow by now. I tell them that people who don't actually know anything about evolution, but are sure that it's wrong, always bring up these points. They usually heard them from a pastor or an apologist who is also unaware that uninformed folks have repeating the same lame arguments ( that actually come from Darwin ) for over 150 years.

I want to emphasize that there's nothing wrong with calling for help from other people to understand something. For most people, this evolution stuff just isn't important. Interesting, perhaps (and hopefully), but it's not going to change their everyday life whatsoever. It's enough to know that, if you have a question, there's someone you can ask who understands it who can explain it to you. No one knows everything, and that's okay. I agree, it's remarkably shitty to try to shame someone for asking for help.

Especially if someone is trying to debunk gravity or something and asks a few questions I'm not 100% sure on (like when a flat earther asked why noon isn't the middle of the night six months from now if the earth rotates 360 degrees in a day, that's because I didn't know the difference between a sidereal day and the other day that my brain just blanked on. As someone who's been a programmer for over 30 years, I suspect maybe Jay wasn't ever a very good programmer. DNA is not like a user manual for building living things. DNA is a domain-specific language. It's entirely possible to design a language such that a program could have meaning forwards and backwards, but that doesn't mean any arbitrary set of symbols makes a valid program forwards and backwards.

The fossil hunters over the last several decades have been discovering new species right along. The remarkable thing about relatively recent finds is how frequently they plug right into gaps in already suspected lines of development, like the interesting series of fish-to-tetrapods around 350 million years ago, the feathered-to-flying theropod line, etc...& our own surprisingly diverse hominid family tree. It can be honestly said that there are fewer missing links today than there were when Dr. Leakey explored Olduvai Gorge.

After learning more about evolution in a senior biology class, and an Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology class I learned there was much more substantial evidence than I realized. My sister was on the same page and announced herself as atheist. When my parents were aware of our doubts, they scrambled to find apologetics, books and videos to quench our questions. Some were better than others but weren't satisfying. I'm so glad I stumbled across this channel. Our wealth and welfare state is a direct result of how the norwegian government set up their oil and gas policies in the 70's. So. Certain generations shall we say have a rather higher cognitive inertia when it comes to the fact that what they see as the golden goose that drew us out of poverty after WW2 is in fact causing potentially catastrophic harm, and needs to be phased out... 🤷‍♂️ Just like evolution deniers, they feel the science threatens their very identities. They just try to get something to work, not necessarily to work well, with low cpu cycles or low memory impact, that holds especially true with modern software short of a decent architect.
