Please be sure to watch the flight footage and my conclusions at the end before drawing conclusions on this plane. While I have continued concerns with certain design aspects of this airplane, the flight experience is of chief importance and speaks impressively well of this aircraft. In short, it's fun to fly.

Hi Joshua, I also built a Guru plane but mine can’t seem to take off and I don’t know the reason. My plane weighs about 8.3g. I am using the rubber motor Guru included with kit. I cut the rubber motor to 1.5g but it seems like there is not enough torque to propel the pane. Do you have suggestions to improve my flight?

Make sure it's balanced at the wing trailing edge, wing is securely held down to the fuselage, etc. The supplied rubber will take 1200-1300 turns if lubricated before each flight and wound very carefully. Stretch to 4x relaxed length, wind in 55% of your target turns without relaxing, then wind in the rest as you work your way in.

Do you think it's a design problem? Or maybe an assembly instruction problem?

I'd say there are issues regarding both production design and the manual. That said, the proof of a plane is in the flying. This one literally flew off the board, one of only two that I've reviewed this year. That speaks volumes I think.

I think we share a lot of criticisms on this one. I get that Guru is a nonprofit, but for goodness sake, do just a little research before putting out a product. If Sci-Oly is an educational thing, show kids what a proper airplane looks like and set a good example with building techniques and design philosophy. Factoring the rule errors in, it looks like laziness.

For what it's worth, it does fly remarkably well, and doesn't need much trimming. These are after all required to weigh at least 8g and this one requires less power to make it fly than expected. That said, no starting CG recommendation, not cool.

@@davidduganne5939to comply with the rules, the plane has to weigh 8g and you are limited to 1.5g rubber. This means that motors are short and fat, and prop selection is more critical than ever
