Science behind kickflip weight distribution - Shift weight before jumping!

Спорт

You can view 3D models from here:
whythetrick.io/how-to/kickfli...
Please visit my website and let’s study skateboarding tricks scientifically and objectively using 3D models and scientific theories.
In this video, we study the science behind weight distribution of kickflips.
Have you ever had this experience that you find your board land on the heel side as you are practicing flicking? In my case, my board always landed on the heel side but every kickflip tutorial seemed to have said that I needed to jump straight upward like ollies. What's really causing the difference? Can anyone explain it scientifically? Let's see if we can.
I just hope this video can help you figure out what could be causing your problem.
So please take a moment and try to study this in detail.
I'm trying to eliminate subjectivity from my explanation as much as possible by referring to scientific and physics theories. Please use my 3D models to solve your "why."

Traditionally, skateboarding how-to videos have always been subjective and the majority of explanations are based on speakers' experiences.
To avoid relying on my personal experiences, please fully utilize the 3D models.
All skaters have different questions.
So that you can analyze skateboarding tricks in detail and solve your "whys," those 3D models are made fully interactive.
The 3D models feature these functions below:
- change camera angle
- adjust play speed
- change transparency
- display gridlines, etc.
Aside from that, I try to explain concepts of skateboarding tricks based on facts, calculations, scientific and physics theories. I may make mistakes so please leave a comment if you find anything.

    This is the channel I was looking for. I can't do any trick unless Its explained to me like this. Hell, I couldn't even drive a stick shirt car until I learned the mechanics of when and why it has to shift. I need things explained in depth before it clicks in my brain. This channel will get bigger. People always ask questions that the person doing a tutorial can't explain. But you do. Keep it up and this channel will blow up for you. Skateboardimg is getting bigger and bigger these days. Ppl are hungry for this kind of knowledge to the point it frustrates them bc they can't find it on KZread. Good work.

    When I do my kickflip I jump straight up and my board flips just fine, doesn’t land heel side I think yours is doing that because of foot placement, your back foot is on the pocket toe side and it’s causing your board to slightly twist heel side. Try popping on the center of the tail and maybe it won’t happen as much!

  • @jeffli480
    @jeffli4802 жыл бұрын

    I think the board goes heelside more for you because of a few factors. You’re popping off the toeside of the nose, as well as opening your front shoulder. Both will affect the natural trajectory of your flick. Also, I think you can try thinking of the flick as pushing the edge of the nose under itself towards toeside to create the flip motion, rather than just sliding out off the side (sorry if this sounds confusing 😅). It seems help me even out the momentum of the flick so the board doesn’t go heelside quite as much.

    A clean kickflip doesn't "roll over" to the heel side. In _reality_ , the physics are different from what you say here, because the timing of the initial start of the flick and whether or not it starts simultaneously with the pop is extremely important here. If you flick 'late', more _after_ the pop was fully initiated, you will have a more 'stationary' flip rotation, in the air, instead of doing this "roll over" to the heel side. The laws of physics do not predict the flick to be a main force, always guiding the board heelside actually. In your own example comparing take off and landing positions 2:00 it is _extremely_ obvious there's some serious leaning back before you pop. It's so extreme it looks like you're making a small turn into leaning back and _then_ you pop. There's no way your body barely moves there. It actually moves a lot, in terms of weight distribution. There's a reason why the more clean kickflips almost look like the flick is 'going behind you'. It has to do with the skater keeping their chest hanging above the toeside of the skateboard. In those kickflips you can pretty much stay exactly at the spot you took off from when popping the tail.

  • @PHeMoX

    @PHeMoX

    By the way, this is similar to how a beginner pop shove it tends to involve a 'jump forward' to catch up with the board, when a pro doing a properly scooped pop shove it can keep it exactly underneath them. Same thing for tre flips. If you have to jump 3 feet to catch up with the board in a tre flip, you're not doing it right. It's still a tre flip, it still counts. But a proper one does not involve a massive shift in weight distribution and jumping in any other direction but up.

    Is it possible to change variables within the model? I have a theory about center of mass vs center of gravity within the squat stance, and how they relate to the kickflips beginning shoulder position. The theory stated/shown here is correct to an extent, but at this movements peak the energy transfers to the skateboard itself and invites unnecessary force that has to be overcome as gravity begins to pull the body down. Love the content, been kickflipping for 25 years and have always wondered the physics behind it. I can send you a few videos that show you what I mean, and which variables could be adjusted.

    This is a great for understanding as I can't land consistently. However Is it possible that your shoulders are rotated facing forward causing the board to shift more to the heels side than when a pro does it?

  • @whythetrick

    @whythetrick

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think it is possible. 1. Opening shoulders probably let my body weight shift to the heel side more. 2. With my body weight on the heel side, as I pop, I eventually would push the tail of my board toward the toe side. 3. Then, the tail becomes a sort of "pivot point," and the nose will correspondingly be swung to the heel side. Nonetheless, this does not mean you can't kickflip with your shoulders opened. It's not like I recommend it to you, but at least you don't have to be worried too much about it.

    Great channel! Quick question regarding both ollies and kick flips. When crouching down before the raise + pop, the hips/butt are rotated frontside (6:43), and the butt is "pointing backward", but when you land the hips/butt are not rotated frontside (6:47), and the butt is "pointing heelside". Why, when and how does this happen and is it necessary? :)

  • @whythetrick

    @whythetrick

    2 жыл бұрын

    This is by far the MOST excellent question. Quite an insight. I was planning to talk about this in the future but you are already there. OK, here're reasons why my butt rotates. - Simply put, it's a matter of action and reaction. - My front foot goes to the heel side as I flick. - By the time my front foot flicks, my entire body's in the air. - In order for my front foot to be able to go to that direction in the air, there needs to be an offsetting force. e.g. In obstacle race, they need to lower their upper bodies when they jump over hurdles. ACTION AND REACTION. By lowering their upper body, they can elevate their lower bodies. In kickflips, similar things happen. As you flick your front foot toward one direction, there needs to be a sort of reaction.

  • 2 жыл бұрын

    @@whythetrick Do you mean that your hips/butt need to be rotating from frontside to neutral to allow your front foot to "rotate"/kick/move from neutral to frontside? Does the same reasoning apply for the ollie, but then your front foot needs to move forward to level out the board, rather than move "frontside" to flip the board?

  • @whythetrick

    @whythetrick

    2 жыл бұрын

    >Do you mean that your hips/butt need to be rotating from frontside to neutral to allow your front foot to "rotate"/kick/move from neutral to frontside? Yes, I do mean it. >Does the same reasoning apply for the ollie, but then your front foot needs to move forward to level out the board, rather than move "frontside" to flip the board? This is also correct. When they do boned ollies, for example, they lower their front foot and their backfoot rises in reaction to the movement of their front foot.

    @@whythetrick another really important thing is the way you're leaning. if you learn to lean heelside as you flick it makes it easier.

    Your back foot is in the pocket. Most people have it in the center of the tail.

    Dude your board always goes heelside because your SHOULDERS are ridiculously open for some reason. Most people's kickflips tend to go backside if anything, which is toeside, because they don't open up, because you SHOULDNT open up on a kickflip

    Most advanced skaters do their kickflip straight without jumping back beacuse their flick dosent carry the board back like your dose

    Thank you for your insight! I was waiting for different perspectives like yours. My contents definitely have room for improvement and might contain inaccurate information. It is your voice that allows me to correct it. May I know exactly where I can find the kickflip you mentioned in your comment?

    This is the exact problem with my kickflips and heelflips, I’m trying to lean heel side, jump backwards, and lift my heels but it took me all day to land a clean kick flip, how do I jump back further and more? It feels like I’m jumping backwards but I’m not that much

    Leaning on the heel side helped fix the problem, and also lifting both my heels to get a clean land helped to land clean.
