More About "Data Management":
Richard Morgan is a data management worker who spends his days logging
endless amounts of data, transferring information between computers and off of cassettes. One day, while logging numbers as usual, he begins to have visions that motivate him to analyze his Stepford-like work environment. The discoveries he makes shatter his perception of his own
reality and force him to confront the true nature of the world he lives in.

@@TheAstroflight I've heard that before and still wonder if it's true. Many companies - governments included - still use old computers and systems for a variety of reasons, usually software compatibility and reliability. For example ATMs use 40 year old computer hardware, they still run on OS2 because that's all that's needed. I'm sure DARPA has some pretty cool tech, but I don't think it's as advanced as people say.

I haven’t turned them on since I was a kid in college in the 80s, but I’ve never been able to pitch em. Oh, and my C128 that I just had to have, about 20 years ago. Haven’t turned it on once. I need to just ebay or dumpster them.

@@F3Y3F3 And a lot of jobs were lost too unfortunately. Most people think of the housing crisis in 2008, but there were many smaller companies that were driven out once the phone replaced their particular industry. For example, the GPS industry, general purpose digital cameras, etc. That said, that was nothing compared to what's coming with task-oriented machine learning systems. As was described to me, "imagine the entire world's economy running like a Ford assembly line. Everywhere, a whip and whirl of automation - food prep and service, driver replacement without legal rest requirements, digital nurses, automated surgeries, error-free accounting, automated banking, self-writing code, even actors will be replaced . No job will be "safe" (except politicians of course). New jobs will be created from this, but nowhere near enough.

I work in IT, in two areas, teaching and development, lately I have been using AI as a complement, my analysis is: we are finally reaching that point where we ask the computer for the data, the results and to be able to work with them , the star trek universe, we can rise, the energy that we spent in obtaining certain data, or solutions to problems, we now use it to work with the solutions, we have given our intellect more freedom, in theory. These days the debate among colleagues is whether "we will be left without a job", this short film has made me reflect... at some point. Will I need a simulation that makes me believe that I am still working on what I like? What makes me believe that I'm still a practical person?

The tape drive was designed for the VIC2, butt they worked with other Commodore computers. I used to repair the computers to the component level. Some of the terminals look like Lear-Siegler ADM 3.

@@palpalmaro5713 I have cataracts, and they are very hard for me to read. The authorized Commodore shops simply swapped the circuit boards and sent them back to Commodore. They charged over $150 for this. I could repair most C64 computers for under $30. I also repaired the 1540 and 1541 disk drives.

Bit of a nitpick... the story makes a point about being pre-internet but the "data" on the screen was HTML which didn't exist then. Although it might've been fun to see COBOL instead, it would've made more sense to just use strings of numbers, seeing that they were supposed to be "logging data".

@@Texas1FlyBoy How did they plug The Commodore 1530 (C2N) Datasette, later also Datassette (a portmanteau of data and cassette), Commodore's dedicated magnetic tape data storage device into a TRS-80 Model 4? lol The TRS-80 Model III was my school's 1st computers in 1983. Seventeen of them. The teachers had two 5 1/4 drives and was networked to the 16 other computers so everything had to be loaded from and saved to the teacher's computer.
