Wow, that was amazing. After watching it, I felt as if I had watched a full-fledged film from which everything unimportant had been cut out. Although there are some minor problems with props in this short, it makes up for it with nice color grading, beautiful scenery, and decent acting. If this film had been released to the cinema, I would not wish for a dime that I would have paid to watch it. 😃

The overriding problem I had with this film is that it feels unfinished. Not because the final scene -- trusting the audience to imagine what comes next is actually a plus -- but because the supernatural angle isn't given nearly enough screen time. It's the most important plot device, but we have only a vague idea of what's happening. An angler fish (or giant piranha?) bites a woman and creates some super-human-fish-healing-hybrid? OK, fine. But how, and most importantly, why? Because the women were in distress? Or was it just random? And how does the apple fit in (aside from the obvious metaphor)? All that said, the acting was terrific, and the writing, despite the story's gaps, is pretty darn good. Director Catherine Bonny uses a light touch, staying out of the film's way with a minimalist approach. A less-confident director might have opted for flash over substance, but the hand here is steady and uncluttered, letting the actors do their thing. And while I loathe exposition, I understand the opening narration is almost a requirement in shorts, so, fair enough. One nit: why do writers have their characters say things like, "The year was 2131 when we traveled to the colony. ..."? No one talks like that. "We traveled to the colony in 2131" is more realistic, feels more genuine and sounds a lot less expo-like. You trust the audience to imagine what happens after the final scene. So trust them to understand that 2131 is a year, not the name of a galactic cruiser. Again, a nit, but still ... Overall, despite its flaws, "Colony" is certainly worth a watch. 2.9/5.

Basic problem is that it is very difficult special effects to make a believable monster ( the later Aliens sequels for example). Also, they should be planting in rows etc. Another issue is that it is not set up with the voyage to the new world. The audience looks at it, oh that's like the beach in Thailand. The acting is good. The female performance makes the emotions believable.

@@PeacefulRallyCar-pw3cs I find she makes a remarkaly credible monster. They should NOT be planting in rows. Really intelliegent people doesn't plant in rows. Rows are usefull to lessent the energy used to plant, heal and harvest. But nature doesn't plant in rows. Production is better quality, plants are happier planting in a way more sophisticated.

@@Jack-gn4gl Yep. I was a newspaper reporter and editor for 30 years and the old adage, "if it bleeds, it leads," is as true now as it ever was. Whenever I got the "nothing but bad news" complaint, I'd explain that bad news sells newspapers not because it's "bad," per se, but because it's relatively rare. Therefore different. Therefore interesting. Therefore newsworthy. A person helps their neighbor? Happens all the time. No news there. That same person kills that same neighbor. Happens very rarely. Front page above the fold. Movies are different, obviously, but I think the same general rule applies. Gotta have conflict -- and doom and gloom is a great way, albeit not the only way, to create it.

You are perhaps too busy looking to your screen to know the world is much more horrile than what is shown here. Do you know of any war? Are you shure that the conditions of these female prisoners are so awfull compared to the normal living of real people not far from your home? Less than a light second... Do you know the sea level previsions for 2050, and how many people must leave thier homes forever? It is not a coincidence that weapon sellers, are buying all newspapers and TV Chanels. Bad news sales weapons. And reporters are paid a percentage, of the weapons sold. If weapons aren't sold, the newspaper closes, and reporters are fired. Reporters are payed for the weapons sold as a result of all the bad news they choose to tell. They are not responsible for the crimes, as Hermes, but they have their part of the cake of slaughter.
