What a great short! the story i love and the actors are really good. The guy playing the android is spot on! Has that Brent "Data" Spiner presence - in a good way. Also the cinematography was really good. This was inspiring!

Not much to ask really love it very self explanatory from the get go, and love how we will never really know who pulled the trigger but I’m guessing the cop

Mr. Hill: Good choices in this film al the way around! The scene just before the last, taking place in the pitch darkness... was an excellant idea, leaving it to the viewer - Was the detective right, or wrong? And did "Benson" actually push him over the edge? This is a psychological drama, science-fiction style, and you handled it well. I've found that the short films presented here on dust, are often better than their padded-out, movie length counterparts. Science-fiction in the theaters, at least in the United States, has more and more become basically an oversized moving comic book these days, with the exception of smaller projects. Thank you for something intense, and different! What was you inspiration for this film, sir?

@@DubzCo Thanks! It's deliberately ambiguous. I have who I think did it and I think both the actors have different answers as to who pulls the trigger.
No filler dialogue. No bad acting. No wasted camera shots. No cheesy special effects. No poor editing. No dull moments. Know I want more from everyone involved in this short film. Consider yourselves to be on the receiving end of a standing ovation. Well done.
Dust can be hit and miss, especially the ones with very limited settings - this one was a hit. Brilliant

The guy playing the android obviously took a lot of inspiration from Brent Spiner's portrayal of Lt. Commander Data on ST:TNG. It was uncanny how much he reminded me of him. Very well done, from both actors. 👍

Best short I've seen on dust in ages. Great premise and really well written.
And that's how much of private information Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. retains about you with or without your knowledge and/or consent. They know your contacts, know where you've been, or going - in real-time, know your tastes, your darkest desires you _think_ nobody knows... so much to the point they could literally destroy you if it calls for that. Keep that in mind ;)
"The trouble with being punctual is that nodoby's there to appreciate it." Frankling P. Jones Congratulations Matt, I appreciate the performances, that robot it is one of the scariest I have ever seen, I appreciate the story, I appreciate the effects, I appreciate that way of selling you death and accuracy (or death with accuracy) by out of this world models with those lighting theeth, that familiar and paceful fake sense that they introduce you, but... what I appreciate most it is your invitation to the spectators to witness that bulbhead's punctuality. Congratulations to the detective too, to be on the scent of something isn't necessarily close to solving it, but at least it's not a bad habit to be on time. Never let yourself from being manipulated by machines or by those that build and program them.
That was superb! A most excellent depiction on how people use fear of technology/AI to their own advantage.
This is an example of why I love shorts like this, a full story told in 7 mins. So tight, every second is gripping.
Props to the actors. I was immersed right in.
Absolutely LOVED this story! Would like to see more of it! Nicely Done!
At first I thought "Another variation of good cop, bad robot." But no, we get this unexpected twist that really makes you think. Great work. Loved it.

That was great! The machines are coming for us, and nobody can stop them, because we are going to build them. My wife is a retired actuary, can't wait to show her this. " You will soon have your God, and you will make it with your own hands."
The Three Laws of Robotics if applicable, make the officer's death a suicide. Nicely done film!
The flaw with the Benson's story is that it knew there would be a power outage at the time of the, "suicide." While it might be able to predict a persons actions based on circumstantial evidence. To have the foreknowledge of a power outage means others would have known about the upcoming power outage as well, and a police department would either have a backup generator prepared to at least prevent the recording system from going down, or they would have appointed a second person to monitor the interview. In order for both the power and backup generator to have failed with out a backup officer in the room the power outage could not have been known about in advance. Thus when the Benson told the officer that there would be a power outage at 11:55 that would be used to orchestrate the Benson's framing, he has informed us that he intends to have his cloud system knock out the power at the given time. Even if this gave the officer the opportunity to attempt to frame the Benson, the recorded evidence describing the blackout, the officers predicted actions and the foreknowledge that the results would cause him to be seen as a "degenerate" either way would have easily been enough to alter the officers actions moments later when the power actually did go out. Thus the only one who had anything to loose was the Benson program, because if the officer didn't take the predicted action then it's whole purpose became nullified. So it knocked out the lights as it "predicted" and murdered the officer.
@rtpoe

Heck, there should have been a second officer present in the interrogation room anyway!
@billyoung9538
2 жыл бұрын
@@rtpoe while that would be ideal, there are many potentially acceptable reasons it might not happen, like being under staffed for some reason; however, I agree with you for one very important reason that is glossed over in the story. Conflict of interest. An officer is never supposed to be involved in a case where they have a personal interest in the outcome of the case, because it creates the very personal bias this story hinges around. Given the accusation of the officer, and the fact the company that made the Benson supposedly knew the time of the officers death, that information would have had to make it through the stations staff before he was allowed to take the Benson into the interrogation room in the first place. If the Benson's predictions are considered accurate at this point, then the time of death for a police officer while on duty would be required to be forwarded to the officers supervisor, as the foreknowledge would alter how a police department handled a given situation to prevent the death. Another foreknowledge plot flaw, because it involves foreknowledge alterable circumstances; however, for the sake of the story we must accept that for whatever reason OTHER people's foreknowledge didn't alter the situation we are initially presented with. Thus we can only deduce what happened based on what we're actually presented, because there could be reasons too complicated to go into in a reasonable short like this. ;)

And the position of the dead cops hands. If it was suicide, he'd still have his hands on the gun.

Matt, I am so glad to see that you're still an active filmmaker! Very well done -- bravo.
The Actuary came across like a "young" Data (TNG) and I want MORE!
makes a good plot for a series - ppl knowing their death date
Once in a while Dust post, something so brilliant that this was one of those gripping productions that were absolutely worth it! This production was so good it should have been a full-length movie. The acting was so convincing, that one would think it was a clip from a high-budget A-rated movie. A job well done to the cast and production team.
Both his hands flat on table, gun in center.. robot shot him!

His hands are too 'aligned' to have shot himself and too far from the gun. We saw him hold the gun and if itbwas him who shot himself, his hands would've fallen nearer his head. Yep. Robot shot him.
Now that was enjoyable. Kept me engaged the whole way. And Chase Fein was brilliant as Benson, convincing as the the AI Robot. 4.5 stars from me and congrats to all involved in the making and acting of the film.
