Brakes were bad on my Axum DP, but the petals were horrible. I thought I would give them a chance for my first ride. Didn't even make it 10 miles before they seized up. One was still working but way to tight. The other was completely seized. Couldn't move it even with pilers.....

Super dope! For the budget, it's one of the sickest bikes you can get for the money

I just picked up an Axum at the sale price as almost an impulse buy, and I'm really liking it so far. After an initial ride, I switched out the flat bars for some riser bars and added a chain-stay pad to quiet things a bit. The only other upgrade was switching a pair of power grips from another bike. I keep trying to like platform pedals, but I remain addicted to the power grips. It's still kind of a mystery to me why they're not more popular for mountain biking -- feet stable on the pedals (no slipping off and having the spikes slice your flesh), you can use the upstroke when climbing, and I've never had a problem getting a foot out instantly when needed. Ah, well, I guess I'm geezer on that topic. But on the Axum, the 11-40 range of the 1x8 seems wide enough, it shifts very smoothly (after a minor barrel adjustment) and I don't think chain drop is going to be too bad (although I'll have to get it out to the Poto to be sure). The fork seems no worse than the Suntour coil forks I've had before, and the brakes aren't bad (though hydraulics would be the next most likely upgrade). I've been surprised that with the tires inflated to the top of the range, it's actually a good CITY bike in permanently pothole infested Ann Arbor where I live -- those 29 x 2.6 tires really roll nicely over all the broken pavement. Lol.

New sub - love how positive you are in the video - and open to budget bike reviews. For me, that is the way to get new folks into the MTB sport - they often start with big box bikes. As long as it gets them out there - then that is great. Reviewing the budget bikes gives them a chance to get a decent one to start with... not to mention that the Axum is on clearance right now at Walmart (if you can find one) for only $228 - which is a steal.

I bought this and the Decathlon ST100 that's just $98. I don't need two bikes, I definitely don't need that one if I have this one too, but both are too cheap to pass up on.

DTE is *not* a trail to test cheap bikes on except maybe parts of Sugar or Kame as it's mostly smooth sidewalk flow trail. I mentioned PLRA or Poto due to roots and rocks.

I took mine out the the Poto a couple of days ago -- both rider and bike ended up unscathed. It would probably be better with some upgrades, but it can handle the Poto as is (even when ridden by a geezer).

Do you guys ever ride out at DTE? Novi and Stoney Creek are a bit far for me for a regular spot but I’m thinking I could easily get to DTE. keep up the great content!

Brakes for sure!!! Worst thing on the bike. Depending on how you ride will determine the fork. It's not to to bad! Clutch would be after brakes in my opinion! Ofcourse grips and pedals
