Great to have options. At the ~600 pricepoint I might personally take the Polygon Xtrada 5 - no dropper, 2x10 deore, tektro hydraulics. But for a beginner the ability to roll this off the rack - and roll it back in to return if they don't enjoy their first couple rides - is huge. A complete XC trail-worthy build for the price of a Marlin frameset is hard to look down on.

Sadly, I find people tend to enjoy the downhill part of biking a lot more than the climbing, and XC bikes just don’t feel as plush when getting to some crazy speeds on a descent. The problem is getting a nice trail bike at this price range.

@@MrThejunkman there really isn't one. Unless you take something like this and throw a beefy fork on it. Then you're trail ish at around 800 bucks. But starting with a bike in this price range, you're gonna chase weak points building it. Upgrade the fork? Tires buck you. New tires? Brakes don't stop them properly. Can confirm you can do some insane ish on a polygon xtrada 7 tho. The 120mm xcr air isn't bad. And it takes about 5 minutes to swap it out for a 140mm rs recon

@@molybdnum Except I’m pretty certain the XCM on there is a coil fork. With its sale price, it’s pretty nice -but I hate brands that pull that “sale” price trick. They know the bike is actually only worth $700 -not 1000. The MTB market is still nuts. They all need to bring prices down

The bike market isnt crazy like before. $550 is just too much for a bike when everything on the bike is noname except the drive train. Take the Canyon grand 5, $50 more and you get a 12 speed deore setup, mt200 hydros, schwalbe tires, suntour fork, other name brand parts. Only thing is no dropper

Very cool, it seems like the Axum is here to stay. However- LOTS of differences from my BLACK / GOLD SPARKLE AXUM!! I don't know if I could fit a 72V battery on that new Axum frame!! The chainstays and the toptube are soo low! Less room for a battery on that Comp X. I got the 228 sale on the black Axum, Man I love that bike. Never pulled the trigger buying anything faster in my life Lol. Got it going almost 46mph. Looking forward to seeing more of these new Axums. Thanks Kev!!

I thought the external cable routing was great on my Axum DP until I added a motor and battery to it. The little cable channels on the downtube get in the way of the battery mount. I managed to secure it but the bumps sort of deform the mount so the battery is a tight fit when sliding in.

This is continued improvement. It's like they're trying to at least keep up with the Ozark Trail. I'm not in the market for another budget MTB, but if I was this would certainly be a contender. I do really hate that Schwinn suspension fork. I hated it on the old Axum and I hated it on the Taff Comp. I would have like to see that same Suntour we see on the Ozark Trail and pretty much every entry level hardtail sold by bike shop brands. I'm perfectly happy with external cable routing and have always found it to be a bit of a gimmick (excepting dropper cables) and more trouble/unnecessary expense than it's worth.

Add an air fork, MT200 brakes and better pedals and you have a bike better than a similarly priced Trek Marlin. They don’t even have a tapered head tube.

It's just that they're quieter and gives a cleaner look for the bike. Also there's no risk of any cables rubbing against the paint, which can remove it pretty quickly.

Is this still using the cup and cone BB? Sure looks like it. The OG axum tires were Chao Yang too. And I don't see the reason to run the shifter cable internally, for like 2 feet. I must say, the price point is getting kinda high. I am in no rush to get this one. I think for a few hundreds more, I rather get a FS from other companies like polygon or giant...

Better fork, hydraulic brakes, and a better crank/BB and this is a great bike. Its about $100 for this dropper, so if you added that to the $400 bikes, you're in the same ballpark. That fork is atrocious. Would rather have an XCT30.

I routed internal hydraulic brake lines with nothing but some thread, a shop-vac, and some old brake cable w/ electrical tape. There's no reason it should require a trip to a bike shop.

@@KevCentral that's a good point. I did bleed the lines. Whether that was necessary is unknown. I'd never even installed hydraulic brakes before, but it was something I knew I was going to do, so I had a bleed kit and fluid on hand ready to go.
