This is the best comparison / review video I've seen for both the helmets. Kudos ! I have been a longtime fan of schuberth C3 Pro. Recently went to the dealer to buy a C4 pro carbon with a friend and after we had paid for 2 helmets, found out that the anti-roll fabric straps were detached from the shell due to a faulty part. Lucky for us that we found out before we walked out of the shop as almost all the helmets the dealer had in stock had the same fault. After we caught it, the dealer offered to pay back our money and also admitted to problems with the C4 line. Both me and my friend ended up buying custom-fitted Neotec2's and I'd say it fits much much better than Schuberth for my head. Schuberth lost a loyal customer due their fuck-up and cover-up. They don't tell you but C4 line has had much more problems than is admitted by the company or dealers.

Have had my Shoei Neotec II for 7 months now. Face shield stays put in any position I choose…wind does not push it down. Likes: very quiet (should have ear plugs anyway); ventilation; ease of access to interior; protection. Could be better: pinlock could wrap further around; “sunglass” could be darker or should have polarized option; a mistake to commit to a particular comms system built into helmet…technology changes too fast; some polystyrene air channels need “shaping” as you may experience some pressure points…doable, however. You are eating cost of Schuberth pads? Very admirable customer service. My hat, or helmet, is off to you.

Hi Chris i had just sent an email to your team regarding this very subject a couple of days ago & Walla. Thank you for another really helpful & informative video. At the moment i have the C4 & find i get to 60 to 70 minutes and get pain in back of my head so i am looking to change as soon as i can afford to. I am in agreement with you regarding the comms, for me phone calls and maybe on the very rare occasion another rider. I like the look of the C5 but for such a premium helmet i think to only have 2 shell sizes is a bit of a let down. I am a small in the C4. So i think my hard earned money will be spent on a Shoie as long as the fit is good. So thanks once again to the chap in a cap for the comparison. 5*.

You can add the new SRL Mesh system to Neotec 2 now, and that's even better than C5's system, because of the Harman Kardon speakers. That being said, I still prefer the C4 Pro Carbon over the Neotec 2 and I have them both. Somehow I drew the long straw and I had none of the problems some people complain about the C4, less those things strapped to the back of the helmet that broke in both my and my wife's C4. But the visor I consider superior on the C4 because of the lower field of view that is not present in both Neotec 2 or C5. The pinlock on C4 is not 120 but I never had a problem with it in summer or winter. I find the C4 quitter, better ventilated and I can open the visor with my both hands!!. And there is the issue of the Neotec 2 that concentrates the air in one spot on my forehead that makes it painful... Your review is AWESOME - thank you!

What a great in depth video on two of the top class makers of flip up helmets. I'm in the market for a new flip up helmet after christmas and really it's the fit for me and the Comms. I've never tried on either Shoei or Schuberth so that's the first thing for me to do..then it's the Comms. I don't need expensive mesh Comms so at the moment it's looking like Shoei Neotech 2 with the SRL Comms. It's all down to the fit though firstly. Thanks again for another excellent video review.

thanks for the clear video. After a bad buy on the Arai Tour X4 I wanted to go back to Schuberth. Now have a Touratech Modular (is from Schuberth) went to a motorcycle clothing store in the area and tried the Schuberth C5 and the Shoei neotech2. My preference was for the Schuberth, personally found it more beautiful e. also felt more solid/sturdy. But still go for the Shoei, it fit my head perfectly. And as you said, an oval head just doesn't fit in a round helmet. Now waiting for the helmet to be delivered by the supplier, the helmet is no longer available anywhere

I am always amazed by the built in comms systems. In the case of the C4, the speakers, microphone, antennas and wiring were built in, but the price to add the unit was similar to the price of a stand alone unit. The parts in the helmet should have reduced that price because I paid for them with the helmet. The mounting system on a stand alone unit, the mounting kit for a second helmet, would cost $80 - $100. You are buying two small boxes with no switches or moving parts. I guess they, Shoei and Schuberth, believe they can charge for convenience. Being a fan of the Packtalk with In-ear monitors, I need none of that. I have found that the speaker pockets don’t match up with my ears. The 85db noise level, while impressive, is still too loud to use without ear plugs. I have recently been working on SOP’s at work and they claim that 85db for less than 8 hours is safe. Even if that 85db was achieved for me riding my ST1300, the second I turn on the comms system, I go over that and it is doubtful that will be achieved in the turbulence behind the windscreen. My helmets are quietest on my naked bikes.

Great video!! It looks like a nice helmet. (C5) That sais, reviewers, such as yourself need to start denouncing the bullcrap comm units deals that Sena likes to make. I have a neotec 2 on the way, and I am NOT looking forward to the struggle of installing my Cardo system on it. If Sena wants to get more market shares from the competition, maybe, just maybe, they would be better off making better products, rather than trying to force helmet buyers into their brand through crappy deals. As for Shoei and Schuberth... come on!!! Your lids are fantastic!! Don't do this! Arai doesn't need to force one brand on comm systems to sell helmets! Neither do you!! STOP IT!!

Very comprehensive review, impressed with the details. Had my C5 for a full season and it’s the best helmet I have ever used, but one major bad point it the pinlock is hazy not clear, you can see this in the videos, I’ve swapped out for a new pinlock but that’s the same, I prefer to ride with out even in tug cool and wet weather. Ps I’ve successfully and neatly fitted cardo bold and edge comms systems. I don’t agree with Mesh system comments, you easy get a days riding with a group of 5 of 6 constant talking, this may differ if not cardo, Mesh is a no brainer for bike to bike comms

Where I live in the US, I doubt that I will ever have access to the alternate pads to determine whether they would make the C5 fit my head. The C4 fit my head better than the C3, but not well enough for me to actually wear it for more than 15 minutes. I ended up choosing an Arai Signet-X which is long oval and it fits well. I do miss the convenience of my Neotec 1, which was too tight front to back. I did wear the Neotec 1 for year and it fit better than anything else I had tried up to that point. Having recently tried on a Neotec 2, it might fit better than the Neotec 1. Unfortunately, I have no need for another helmet, especially at the prices charged. I am in no way saying that they aren’t worth the cost if they are quality, comfortable and safe, but I simply will choose to spend the money on something else as it is in finite supply in my house. Nice review although more experience with the C5 will be useful.

I finally got the chance to try on the US spec C5. It fits pretty well although it was a little wide. When the alternate pad sets become available, I would like to try it out. Otherwise, it is relatively quiet and comfortable.

I just bought the new G5 from a buddy of mine. He ordered it from a company in Spain and couldn’t return it. I’ve only owned a couple of relatively inexpensive helmets so, take this with a grain of salt. I found it to be incredibly comfortable. Wind buffering at 80 mph is non-existent. No need to use ear plugs any longer. One money saving feature I like is, I can comfortably fit my Apple ipods/ipod pro’s. No need to purchase expensive bluetooth products. Only negative so far, I wish the exterior sun visor slider bar was a little bigger. It’s hard to move the visor up and down with winter riding gloves on. Is it worth spending $700 on a helmet while riding a $3000 bike, definitely. It makes riding much more comfortable.

Good comment about the unique fit and experience of different riders on different bikes. I have had a chance to ride in the C5 for many months now. . For me its been a very good helmet. It's near silent with a fairing and very cheap earplugs on my R1200 gs. Sometimes I wonder if its quieter than being in my car. Also the ventilation and field of vision is really good. Can I just say that the integrated SC2 intercom is a major let down. The Cardo Packtalk was my first intercom so although the SC2 appears to perform as well as expected for an SC2 it is so poor in sound quality compared to the Cardo that I thought that something might have been wrong with it at first. I hope to have it replaced by the time of my European ride in September.

Now that we’ve been able to use the C5 for a while, some issues have surfaced. For example, that wireless buttons for the Sena unit might have saved Schuberth a wire or two, but the wireless connection is often unreliable and slow to connect to the brain. If you manage to turn it off manually, it sometimes does not automatically reconnect. The visor is another thing, although it has a better “crack position”, it just does not want to stay at any open position on a bike with a windscreen, it gets slammed shut as soon as you hit 40mph.

I've been a Shoei customer for over a decade but will probably be changing brands when my current GT-Air is replaced. The problem is that my preferred comm system - Cardo - will not fit on either the GT-Air II or the Neotech II (or the Schuberth C5). Since they are forcing me to make a choice between their helmet and Cardo, Cardo will win. It is, in my opinion, a better comm system than the Sena. Schuberth following this forced choice route rules their helmet out as a possible replacement for my Shoei. A number of my friends are making the same choice. hopefully Shoei will realize that not all riders like Sena comm units.

  • @Motolegends

There has been a shortage of some Shoei pads recently, post Brexit and the Lockdown, but only in a few sizes. We always carry several hundred sets in stock. They don’t cost a lot and when you fit a replacement set you get your money back. So your dealer is cutting corners. All Shoei dealers should keep all the pads in stock all the time. If you’re serious about custom fitting, it really isn’t a huge investment. He is having to order an extra small in to get hold of a 39mm cheekpad or a 13mm liner, but why? Any serious stockist should have at least one example on the shelf of every size a helmet comes in. I do have some sympathy. We have done the same in recent weeks to get the parts we needed, but we have never had to order a helmet in to get that part. But we do now have more than 30 helmets with removed inners that we have stolen for customers. We will put the missing parts back in due course. But I have to say that I feel your dealer is making excuses. The don’t seem to really be committed to custom fitting. The Schuberth system is more difficult, but dealers who are committed to customer service will swallow the cost. CP

Interesting, however having owned numerous Schuberth (includingS2, C3 Pro a C4 and currently a C4 Pro and an R2 between which I swap my coms unit), I was very disappointed with the C4 but I would say that the well documented short comings of the C4 were all addressed by the move to C4 Pro. In light of that I would not wish to be an early adopter and would wait for a C5 Pro. The Shoei will have to be replaced by a compliant ECE 22.06 model and I have read that in SHARP tests the current Neotec 2 chin bar only stays closed 70% of the time in crash tests. Neither brand performs well in those SHARP tests but at least the C4 Pro chin bar stayed intact

  • @Motolegends

You could be waiting a long time. The C4 Pro was introduced speedily to repair some of the issues with the original C4. But it was well over five years for the C3 Pro to replace the C3. Don’t take any notice of SHARP. I have written numerous articles about the standard. Nobody in the industry takes it seriously. It was predicated on a European Commission report called COS327, but the former BSI people ignored the recommendations and used cheaper, inferior equipment. In their first round of results they gave five stars to a cheap, £60 plastic helmet from Lazer. They gave an Arai helmet just three stars. From then on, nobody has really given SHARP much consideration. The chin test devised by SHARP has not been peer reviewed or independently tested. It has not been adopted by the new ECE 22-06 regulations, by Snell or DOT. The SHARP test is not to be given much weight. If you choose your helmets based solely on their recommendations you will probably be disappointed. The organisation is currently looking for funding to improve their test procedures in the light of 22-06, but it seems unlikely that they will be successful.

@@Motolegends Well that’s the DfT efforts to improve standards and help motorcyclists summarily dismissed and put well and truly in a box then. I can’t pretend that I was not disappointed to find my current choice of helmet not scoring well in the SHARP tests, but being “just” a customer I have no dog in the fight so to speak. With that in mind I couldn’t care less if a particular Arai didn’t score well, but I’m not going out to buy that cheap Laser either. I’m not in the target market demographic for either of those I think. However ignoring brand prestige and marketing for a moment, isn’t a good safety score for a budget helmet not good news for those who perhaps can’t afford a premium C5 or a Neotec etc?. I do enjoy your reviews on bike gear, always logical with common sense advice which is always welcome, so thank you for that.

Does MotoLegends order directly from the manufacturer or is it through a “supply house”? In my part of Canada, it’s the latter. As a result, should I need different sizing of cheek pads/headliner, I have to swallow the cost. Just ordered a SHOEI N2 and expect it in by late Jan 22. The thing that kills me about this helmet is the chin bar, it's so thick that you won't be able to see your gauges on a naked bike- Way different than the C4 which was a turd but at least you had a great field division. Also the big benefit of the Sena S50 is it recognizes Google & Siri assistants, not mesh. The internal sun visor is also way too high on the new model. It looks like it would be an inch above your nose in the lowest position which lets a whole bunch of air & bugs hit your eyes when you have the visor open in congested traffic on a hot day.

I'm confused. So does this mean that if I have a schuberth C5 with a sc2 coms. And a friend of mine as a different Bluetooth coms system. Will I still be able to talk with him? Or the sc2 only works with sc2. Like, if my pillion has a different helmet with a different coms, would it pair as well?

  • @Motolegends

    @Motolegends

    Жыл бұрын

The important thing is the brand of comms.. The SC2 is Sena so will pair easily with any other Sena. Will also pair easily with UCOM models from Interphone as those have a Sena chip. It is not easy to pair intercoms from different manufacturers. Some manufacturers say you can but is is never straightforward and normally requires ‘tricking’ the units into pairing. So our advice is go for same brand on comms. But doesn’t have to be same model.

Sorry, Jacob; you are absolutely right. In my last video on the C5 I did talk about this, but forget to do so here. My fault; not intentional. On a subconscious level, perhaps I wanted to give the helmet a chance, and not dwell on perceived weaknesses? I don’t know! In your case, I don’t think the look of the shell will appear overly large. It can happen if you have an ‘extra small’ head in the smaller shell size. Or a ‘large’ head in the larger shell size, but as an ‘extra large’ in the larger shell it won’t look untoward. I think you should try it on to see how it feels. Honestly, it can be a mistake to obsess over the aesthetics. The important thing is fit and comfort.

Only two; and in our view this is sub-optimal. Embarrassingly, I forgot to mention this fact in this review, although I did talk about it in my previous one. At times, however, too much emphasis can be put on the number of shells. There are helmets out there with four shell sizes that nobody would want to wear; yet a lot with two that anybody would. The acid test is fit; if a helmet fits, then I wouldn’t be too bothered about the number of shell sizes. Schuberths have never had more than two shell sizes; and on the C3 this was never really an issue. With the C4, the issue was not the number of shell sizes, but the fit; it just wasn’t very accommodating. CP

@@Motolegends Thank you, sir. I agree with everything stated, and generally I do not care about shell sizes..except that some bigger shells do not or cannot fit well in my top case. This is my default helmet storage location and a prized convenience. I'd like to share an odd thing I encountered with my prior C4. To my understanding, and for whatever reason, size L in the American market utilized the big shell, while the same size in Europe appears to utilize the small shell. So, even tho I had the same size helmet according to Schuberth, one would fit in my top case and the other would not. For this reason, although I'm in America, I only order helmets from Europe... presuming the safety regs maybe allow less foam and potentially a smaller shell if my size is borderline.

That gives you a point of reference. Things like noise should be fairly standard unless someone bought the wrong size helmet. And maybe that 1 video didn't help but when you have a repository of tens or hundreds of videos to watch you have a good enough database to give a good idea of what each helmet is like. Now back to the video.

Given that the full weight of your head and your body will normally be adding to the weight of the helmet in the event of an accident, the saving of 220g/300g. in its construction will usually make little difference in the event of an accident. The lightness can make a difference in terms of fatigue on the track, but on the road not so much. It also has to be borne in mind that carbon fibre doesn’t necessarily make for a more protective outer shell. Carbon shells are not necessarily stronger than composite ones; they are just lighter. Yes, if all your mates use Cardo, then you can’t easily talk to them with a Sena set up; you are going to need Cardo, as the two systems don’t easily communicate with one another. There will be no difference in battery life between a Sena and a Cardo; my only point was, and is, that Mesh consumes more battery power than Bluetooth. I have never had a problem talking all day ‘on tour’ with my Sena, and for most people the same will apply to Sena’s Mesh system. This issue is not so much about a day out; the battery longevity is more about how often those who commute every day will have to re-charge their units. CP.
