Modulars are actually consistently quieter on quality modular's such as the c5, because you can get a tighter closure under the chin and around the neck than you can on a full-face helmet. As for safety, it may be technically correct to say a single unit is stronger than a split design, but when was the last time that you heard of a neotec II, sportmodular, or schuberth helmet split in half in an accident? I suspect, never. It sells the assumption that e.g. An OEM car's wheels aren't strong enough by default, just because they're not a forged design. You forgot to mention that it has inbuilt roll-off cable protection (not something afforded by any full-face), and that the internal sun visors height is adjustable. Good review of the big mac though 😀

The nice thing about a modular is that rolling into a shop or gasolinero for a bite or pee, you can keep the lid on your head without having the cops called on you. An open face modular is weird enough, walking around with most of your face covered, parents hide their kids from you. It also make going through checkpoints on base or paying tolls easier.

This is great to hear as my first Schuberth was a C3, which I loved, but I never picked up a C4 because of so many complaints about it. The C3 was by far the most expensive helmet I had purchased at the time and it immediately showed me what that extra cash bought me. Regarding the limited shell sizes - I'm pretty sure that was one of the big complaints with the C4 so it's a bit disappointing that they have continued with that.

6:05 I worked at a motorcycle gear shop in Germany for a while and most customers who were interested in the C series by Schuberth appreciated the comfort that Schuberth provides. In addition to that, modular helmets are very practical when it comes to wearing glasses. It is a lot easier to put on glasses wearing a modular helmet than a full face helmet. I personally don't like modular helmets either - because of the weight and overall noisiness. But for riders who wear glasses or like to continue wearing their helmets during short breaks its a good option. :)

@@albertjurcisin8944 Ha! I know the reasons modular helmets exist but their popularity still baffles me. Modular helmets are typically louder, heavier, not as safe, and physically larger compared to a traditional full-face lid. But yes, you can save maybe 15 seconds of time if you wear glasses, so there's that. I've also heard a few cases of riders who feel claustrophobic in full-face helmets and therefore a modular helmet is an alternative option that gets them into full-face coverage while still being able to open the lid up when those claustrophobic feelings come along. So yes, there are a few benefits to modular helmets. But I'd still say for the average rider, these benefits are negligible. Keep it pinned! - Brandon

First off, I am a long term Schuberth user. I wish to fine tune your C4 critique. I would apply the backwards step analogy from a C3 to only the standard C4. The mid cycle C4 Pro/C4 Pro Carbon is fantastic. Providing you have a Schuberth shaped head. With C5, Schuberth is adopting a different head shape (less long-oval and more rounded). On another criticism of the modular helmet... I am a motorcycle safety instructor, and need to have quick discussions with students while riding. Flip up to talk, back down to ride. Only possible with a modular. Motor Cops use them for the same reason...

If you need to make quick stops for gas and taking a leak, it is muuuch more comfortable to flip the lid up than to take the helmet and anything you have under the helmet off, like a skullcap, glasses, earplugs, etc. Even with ultralight carbon fiber lids, it gets old taking it off and on if you're riding all day multiple days.

With the fairing on my bike I have even wondered if it's quieter than my car. The ventilation is great and I have never found the weight to be an issue so I agree with most of what you say. I found the the top vent can be difficult to operate though. You mention the integrated intercom. I bought into the idea. it's the major dissappointment of the helmet. I intend to revert back to my Cardo Packtalk asap. I plan a ride into Europe and definitely hope to have it swapped out for a Cardo before I go. The Sena sound is thin and tinny. The Cardo is rich and full bodied and noticeably so in normal speech such as a phone call and amazingly good in music playback thanks to the JBL speakers. The Sena is a bit like white noise in your ear and ruins the ride as far as I am concerned.

Ive rode half way around the earth and the option to flip up while gassing up, dodging traffic in Lima during summer or in traffic in Bangkok -- no full face can compare. Not fan of having to pay 50% of the RRP of the helmet again to use the speakers that are already part of it! On the modular helmet front, I think at the bottom end of the market they are heavy and noisy like you say, but at the top end with Schuberth and Shoei you get helmets that have a tighter sealing neck roll than a fixed face, so in theory can be quieter. They do weigh more than most brands but the C3 was definitely lighter than most full face Arai helmets, so nothing untoward. Meanwhile the Nolan helmet I got when I first started riding weighs in at 1900g with Comms...

We all threw the C4’s on the shelf and went back to the C3 Pro’s after pulling the Carda com’s out in installing the Sena that’s made for the C3 Pro. I’ll have to wait for some forum comments from some folks to decide whether to spend the money on the new C5. the difference in safety is minimal. If you impact so hard that the chin bar is compromised, you probably just died. Not so much eating but drinking is more of a concern. Being cool when its 95 degrees F , it helps.

I'm one of those oddball guys that prefers a dark external visor and clear inside visor. Reason why is I do most of my riding in the day and if and when it gets dark outside I ride with my external visor up and my clear inside visor down. Sadly, Shuberth doesn't make a clear inside visor for the C5 (yet) so I'll have to carry a pair of clear safety glasses with me just in case.

It does get a bit "violent" at times. I'm using the Quadlock phone mount paired with the anti-vibration mount so I don't ruin the camera on my iPhone (the vibrations can destroy it). I've used this mount on ADV bikes through a variety of terrains in the Mojave desert, which is almost as bad as the pot-hole-filled streets of Philadelphia, ha! This mount works incredibly well. I've used quite a few different brands over the years and Quadlock has been my favorite for quite a long time now - www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/quad-lock-motorcycle-handlebar-mount - Cheers! -Brandon

I have the non-Pro C4 in legacy red and it’s a great, comfortable and very quiet helmet. As an alternative I bought a Neotec - it’s good, easier to take the pads out and clean, but I find it much noisier. The helmet also feels much bigger than the Schuberth, so I’m guessing back then Schuberth had more helmet sizes. The sound isn’t a big deal as I mostly wear ear plugs. In the UK, gas station insist you remove your helmet when going in to pay, so the flexibility saves the hassle of taking your helmet off - just flip up the visor.

That's a good note, sir - thanks for sharing! I've experienced being asked to remove my helmet when entering a gas station too. But, sometimes it doesn't change anything here with opening the chin bar - some places still ask you to take the helmet off entirely. Seems to be a very "situational" circumstance. Keep it pinned! -Brandon

If you choose to add the SC2 system to the helmet, the sound quality is solid. We still recommend wearing ear plugs to remove the drone of wind noise, but that will also help you hear the music better. Pairing to the SC2 system is relatively easy though, which will have you playing music in a matter of seconds.

I can add another scenario when modular helmets are top notch -- on a stinking hot day -- say in Bangkok, Texas or Miami -- and your at a stop light -- you can flip up while waiting -- then quickly flip down when you start... Takes a nanosecond to do this... In mean time, you get some great airflow or at least something other than stale air inside a full lid. I just dont get the bias against fippies? Also, contrary to popular belief -- C5 actually quieter than many full face helmets at a tested 98 db. I do love goggles while on an ADV helmet for sure -- but there is no clear winner -- sadly pro's and con's to both. I wish Schubert opened the visor larger to add goggles.

are really full face helmets quieter than modulars? As I understood Schuberth modulars were the most quiet helmets on the market

  • @RevZilla

    @RevZilla

    2 жыл бұрын

Yes, traditionally Full Face helmets are able to control the sound levels easier since there are less gaps in the shell. It's not really an absolute for every single type of helmet comparison between full face and modulars, because that depends on brand to brand investments and model to model features. But overall, yes Full Face helmets are traditionally quieter than Modulars generally. Schuberth does claim certain dB level drops but there are some *'s in their claims about how it was tested and on what bike etc.

Go into the grocery store and go through the checkout line with a full face, try yelling at your riding buddy with a full face helmet on. How about when a cop tell you to pull over and you say get lost to him with your full face helmet on? With a modular you’ll get a much different reaction.

I feel like the argument is more between the cost of safety having a pivoting chin bar instead of a solid state one and the 10 seconds it takes to take a helmet off to go into your store. I don't understand the talking with your riding buddy argument at all though, I never had someone unable to hear me or just to ask to say something a second time. Not really something that makes me want to sacrifice protection for the times it happens either. Just my 2 cents though
