Schubert's intimate universe, so widely exploited by the Lieder, finds here a different, more collective expression. The interpretation of these works by this entire team of first-rate performers is simply ideal.

This recording was a remarkable event for bringing together such great singers in this unusual repertoire, to delight the hearts of all lovers of Schubert. Congratulations (as always) to the CMRR team for the exceptional remastering of this almost forgotten but groundbreaking EMI disc. Not many people realise that Maestro Sawallisch was also a sensitive and superb accompanist. It's hard to single out any of these grand performances, but Brigitte Fassbaender's mastery of Schubert's piece d'occasion Ständchen (at 22.03) is probably the best version ever recorded, given added lustre by the brilliant, remastered sound! What a tonic and antidote to the dismal start of 2021. Grateful thanks.
