Concert audience: all consumptive ??
What is outstanding here is the orchestra lead by the great and underrated conductor Leinsdorf. Richter - supertechnician that he was - seldom plays a wrong note but misses most of the subtleties of Brahms´ musical language. His interpretation is coarse and nowhere comparable to his friend Emil Gilels who (together with Claudio Arrau and Rubinstein) really deserves the gold medal for Brahms 2. concerto. (Radu Lupe, Leon Fleisher and Rudolf Serkin come close)
Actually, this is a good interpretation
Thank you for the great music today
A composer and an artist that are both great and irresistible and I love very much, a beautiful and much cherished recording. Thank you very much !
Cine este Clara Schumann?
The first orchestral recording of Jacqueline du Pré (from 1965) was also the premiere on record of Frederick Delius’ ethereal cello concerto. A memorable performance still regarded as the summit of the discography... Frederick Theodore Albert Delius (born January 29, 1862, in Bradford, England - died June 10, 1934, in Grez-sur-Loing, France) was a British post-romantic composer of German origin. As a child, he learned the violin and piano, but his father, Julius Delius, a German industrialist who ran a wool manufacturing business, did not intend for him to pursue a career in music. At thirteen, he discovered Wagner's music by attending a concert. At his request, his father sent him to Florida to Solano Grove on the banks of the St. Johns River to manage an orange plantation while studying composition. It was following this stay that he composed his first orchestral work, Florida Suite. Returning to Europe, he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory under Reinecke, and it was in this city that he met Edvard Grieg, who profoundly influenced his music. In 1888, thanks to Grieg's intervention with his father, he moved to Paris and lived in France for the rest of his life. From 1924, he suffered from syphilis, which paralyzed and blinded him. Unable to write his music, Eric Fenby, his secretary, transcribed his final compositions from dictation. He died in 1934 in Grez-sur-Loing in Seine-et-Marne. An admirer of Richard Wagner for music and Friedrich Nietzsche for philosophy, Delius was an original. Two of his works, A Mass of Life (a grand oratorio in German on poems by Nietzsche) and Requiem are characterized by a refined, ecstatic, even grandiloquent language. His opera A Village Romeo and Juliet expresses the same pessimism but allows for more gentleness. Delius also wrote symphonic poems and chamber music. His essentially chromatic style has been described as musical impressionism. Thomas Beecham was the champion of his music and greatly contributed to making it known from 1907 onwards. I read once that Furtwangler said that if you can't accompany, you can't conduct. I wonder whether this recording disuaded many others from recording this work?
Strauss did not compose a cycle but independent songs. Even the name "Four Last songs" was only given posthmously by Ernst Roth, who published them with no opus number in 1950. The order Strauss composed the songs was Im Abendrot, Früling, Beim Schlafengehen, September. Roth then published them as Früling, September, Bein Schlafengehen, Im Abendrot while the premiere with Wilhelm Furtwängler and Kirsten Flagstad was Beim Schlafengehen, September, Früling, Im Abendrot. This rendition follows the sequence Furtwängler and Flagstad premiered in London in 1950, but there is no authority on this because Strauss did not conceive a cycle, he just entrusted Flagstad to premiere the songs "with a first class orchestra and conductor". That being said, I personally like the order of Roth, which most recordings follow. Only a few follow the sequence of Furtwängler/Flagstad, this is one of them. Lisa della Casa sings wonderfully but Böhm rushes through the score and misses some of the poetry other conductors have explored (Masur, Karajan, Szell), precisely a key feature in these songs.
What an extraordinary achievement this is. The music is so diverse and full of pleasant surprises - and Ross plays every one with a xceptionalnskill and clarity and great imagination without doing stuff just to impress. I own this collection and it never fails to give me pleasure, no matter which disc I decide to play. Highly recommend!!
A very good remastering which reminds me of the single art of Sviatoslav Richter.
Amazing ensemble work, the trills at the end of the 1st movement are in perfectly clear unison.
Rischter, incomparável!
I truly hate youtube. Deleted my favorite recordings of this music for God knows why.

This master’s interpretation will never be surpassed
J’adore cette interprétation de Monique Haas ! 🥰🥰🤍🤍
1:08:28 … wonderful bass solo
God reaches down and touches a select few.....Or perhaps God touches all of us, but only a select few make a mark. Whichever the case may be, Wagner made his life count.....

What a masterpiece.
Wonderful and touching!
This is one of the best performances ever. Thank you Erich Gruenberg, LSO and Stokowski.
ah, a gravação do jovem glenn gould... cantando junto rs
This is a great collection of arias sung by Maria Callas. There are some true classics in this grouping of some of the best singing by glorious Maria Callas, the queen of all sopranos of all times, past, present and future. Seriously! Most of the numbers (arias) she is involved with in this great collection, are beyond being famous, are inmortal in their own rights thanks to having been sung by Callas. There will never be another Maria Callas, or someone comparably close to her, ever! We had her in person for a while, now she continues to live in her inmortal recordings and in our hearts. God bless her.
John Elliot Gardiner tried to emulate Furtwangler in his recordings of the Schumann Symphonies. Obviously, Gardiner is no Furtwangler.
I don't know how you define this as a reference recording. Your defnintion seems to diverge quite strongly from what a reference recording usually is. A referencere recording is, by critical consensus, usually a widely commercially available recording of a work, against which all recordings of the same work are judged. One of the most important aspects: Flawless execution, achieved in a studio recording. This here is not it. One minute in and already two major fuck ups from the orchestra.
Niemand kann so schön spielen vi Dinu Lipatti !!!!!!!!!

Caray con los venecianos.😊
He empezado a sentir simpatía por Italia.❤
