Schubert: Complete Symphonies (Full Album)

Bringing together all seven of Schubert’s completed symphonies, as well as the much-loved B minor ‘Unfinished’, this set charts the development of Schubert’s voice as a symphonist. His first six symphonies were composed between 1813 and 1818 for the orchestra at the religious school that he attended in Vienna. Although they could be considered to be apprentice works, and are clearly influenced by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and - in the case of the Sixth Symphony - Rossini, they are remarkable achievements for such a young composer, and the listener can hear some of the hallmarks of Schubert’s more forward-looking, romantic style, such as a bolder and richer harmonic language, beginning to emerge.
After a serious illness in 1822, from which he only partially recovered, Schubert composed his final symphonic masterpieces, the ‘Unfinished’ (1822) and the ‘Great’ (1825-6). From the haunting slow introduction and the extraordinary sense of pathos of the ‘Unfinished’ to the joyful and rhythmically vital ‘Great’ symphony, both works showcase Schubert the symphonist at the peak of his powers and are some of the most popular and enduring pieces in the orchestral canon.
Schubert’s complete symphonies are performed here by the legendary Staatskapelle Dresden under the inspired direction of celebrated conductor Herbert Blomstedt, praised by Gramophone for his "incomparably refined sensitivity and canny interpretative prowess".
Other information:
- Recordings made between 1978 and 1981 at the Lukaskirche in Dresden.
- “Probably the finest, most consistent Schubert cycles available” (David Hurwitz, Classicstoday.com, performance: 10).

Thank you so much! Blomstedt is an amazing conductor (and still going strong at near ninety!) and Schubert such a visionary composer. :) I bought the boxed set of Wilhelm Kempff playing all of Schubert's piano sonatas (including the many unfinished pnes) when I was fourteen and it became one of my most cherished record acquisitions - just like here, it lets you follow his journey as a composer from his teens to his final years (with the piano sonatas, within three months of his early death).

Most musicologists would agree that Beethoven was hands down the greatest composer of the Classical period. But man, this guy and Mozart sure gave him a run for his money! Schubert has a brilliance and originality about his melodies that few composers have ever matched. And the fact that he outdid both Mozart and Beethoven in the sheer volume of his compositions, despite living such a tragically short life (31 years), is an extraordinary marvel in itself.

Of all the composers, only Haydn and Mendelssohn surpass Schubert at the symphony. He should be promoted way more. Had composers chosen to follow his model rather than Beethoven's, musical history would have been much altered (and probably have taken a turn for the better). His "Great" symphony surpasses Beethoven's "Choral" one, and his first six classical symphonies are emblems of beauty that could have almost been taken strait from the late Haydn's legacy.

Peter Simon Certainly it’s not competitive sport, I’m not a sportsman. Certainly we’re different, that’s quite obvious, and we even are entitled to be so! But if somebody goes around telling Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is utterly boring (with or without his piano concertos!) to him, that man either doesn’t understand music at all (even if he plays the piano for one hundred years) or he belongs to the large company of people who say: I have made up my mind, so don’t trouble me with facts. As you can see, my attention is still quite all right, even if I have become a little bit older by the time going.

Jasper. when I had your age I was already many years listing to Wagner, Schonberg, Schubert, Bartok and so on...later there was a guy playing guitar...he was called Jimi Hendix and I loved his music rom the first record he made. I'm 70 and I still love classic music but also good rap music. There's good music...and less good but tit doesn't matter whether it is rap or opera or jazz... I've been working as stage manager for concerts with as well opera as rock...I always find it strange when someone says "I like this kind of music more than that kind" ...sometimes I love Indian music, sometimes African...sometimes it all depends on my mood or the mood I want to have.. When Schubert would have live today, he would have loved rap music for sure... all great composer did love all kind of good music, they were always interested in hearing new solutions. Some people starts with the wrong music....and then they think they do not like that kind of music....strange because each kind has a variety of great music..

  • @diegohidafl

    @diegohidafl

    7 жыл бұрын

Since Mr. Robson did not answer you, I think that you cannot pinpoint the differences, you just fell them. Of course there is the style, but I find more interesting noticing the difference within the work of each composer. For example Beethoven changed during his life for various reasons, like becoming deaf, and that changed his style. Just listen to all the sonatas for piano of Beethoven (32 sonatas) and you will notice the difference between the 1st and 32nd. There is a video of the complete work by Claudio Arrau, and it is just astonishing. In the 32nd you could even think that Beethoven started the swing or jazz. And in comparison with the very classic 1st, it is a huge difference!!

I should say between Mozart and Beetoven. Unfortunately he was surrounded by too many geniuses of music and was obscured. He had a musical destiny similar to the one of Antonio Salieri, his teacher, always under the shadow of Mozart.

Schubert wrote some of the greatest music (the Unfinished symphony, the Great No. 9, many chamber works, piano works, etc., etc. He does not belong with Salieri at all. Also, his lieder is about the greatest ever written.

The 7th symphony, if it ever really existed, has long since been lost. You will not find it on any "complete" set of Schubert symphonies, although there have been attempts to reconstruct it using other Schubert pieces, for example the 2-piano sonata in C. But it's all conjecture. Also, there have been attempts to complete Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony No. 8, for example by Brian Newbould & Mario Venzago.

You might also ask where is Mozart's 37th. It turns our to be by Michael Haydn, except the opening slow introduction, which is, indeed by Mozart. As for Schubert's 7th, he had been trying to compose an opera. In doing so, he put aside symphonic sketches. By the time he gave up on the opera his technical style had so changed that it no longer matched the symphonic sketches. So he abandoned both pieces.
