he says a very important thing here, which you don't hear many other people in writing say: you write because you have to, you write for yourself first and foremost, you'll write even if nobody is going to read it :)

As a newly established writer, I find his advice very useful and refreshing! My favorite saying of his is that "writing is a way of life, not a job or a profession", it made me cry how meaningful it felt! I would want to meet him one day, if he will live till then. I don't know why, but the audio of the interviewer and Mr. Frey are drastically different, she sounds as if she's in an online call, while his audio is recorded through the camera! So odd...still like the video though! Glad I stumbled upon it. :-)

Thank you - happy to hear you like the video! The audio problems were caused by a microphone malfunction. We had to record the interviewers voice via Mr. Frey's microphone and push it up later which results in the poor sound quality that you noticed. Sorry for that!

I read all of the comments below and some of them are quite unreasonable - the moment I read them, I knew they were written by someone who hasn't even written a word filled with such passion that writers like Mr. Frey have. One was really odd for me(I had to translate it because I didn't understand it) - "Before you tell someone how to write a damn good novel, you would have to write one yourself..." Like???? He HAS written novels before his first "How to Write a Damn Good" writing guide! I recently got the first one and Mr. Frey had at least written two novels before AND was a teacher of CREATIVE WRITING at UC Berkeley! I think that makes him more of a novelist that whomever commented that nonsense. Anyways, sorry for a bit of a rant. I just don't like how people who don't even know anything about a person and their work go and criticize without any personal experience or knowledge in that area to back up their critique with. Once again, thanks for the reply, have a nice day! 🙂

Hab mein zwischenzeugniss vom drehbuch kurs jetzt bekommen. durchschnittsnote 1 - 2. habe viele ideen für scripte und wünsche euch allen glück. mein erstes soll ,,ZUSAMMENSTÖSSE - Uns treibt nichts Auseinander,, und dann werde ich es in US - Englisch übersetzen lassen. gruss.

denkt nicht so negativ hier leute. Was wollt ihr sonst schreiben ? würde schwer werden weil man seinen verblassten verstand und körper manchmal pflegen sollte.

Na super. Ich versteh kein Wort Sie hätten für die Fremdsprachlegastheniker wenigst einen Untertitel basteln können.

Deutsche Untertitel sind bei dem Video seit jeher verfügbar - einfach einschalten! 🙂

Bevor er anderen sagt, wie man einen verdammt guten Roman schreibt, sollte er selbst erstmal einen schreiben....

Vielleicht sollte der Ami zuerst Deutsch lernen?
