    Great review! I got my SCHF9 a week ago and love it! I really like the weight and the ergo on the handle. I have large hands so it's hard to find knives that fit me, really love the grip. Nice idea of buying a decent sheath for it, I found a company that makes Kydex sheaths to fit the SCHF9 specifically, Cleveland Kydex Co. They sell theirs for $30.00 also. Just thought I would mention it. So for about the price of a BK7 - I'm getting a good overall 1095 camp knife and a kydex sheath that snap-fits my SCHF9. Not bad!

    great vid , packed a ton of info in . note : if had to use the bk2/esee6/f9 to heavy duty pry the f9 wins , to me a huge factor . becker imo messed up when they skeletonized tang and weakend it as a pry bar ! also , do you think theres something such as a waterproofing spray or maybe wax to apply to sheath to make the nylon material longer lasting / tougher ? schrade has a excellent item going here , ide love seeing this steel/grind/thickness in a bk7 combat version with bk like handle

    I know a guy who makes scales for the 9 and several other of the Schrade blades. New and thinner scales can 100% change the feel of this blade and pretty much any other blade on the market. Also, as of this post (end of 2021) Schrade has (I believe) discontinued all blades made by Griffin Designs, which is a damn shame cause they were the best in the line (one non addition to that list is the Schf51 [wish it was a saber and not a hollow grind though]) Outstanding vision GideonsTactical!

    Take a look at the schf 18. It's the reintroduction of a S&W design from 8 or 9 years ago. Really surprised me for the price. Thick spine with a flat grind, easy recurve and a sturdy point. Works well for the woods once sharpened to spec and would do nicely as a defense tool.

    I was under the impression a given type of steel is either 1) hard to sharpen and holds an edge for a long time OR 2) easy to sharpen but loses its edge quickly. Can't see how it would be hard to sharpen and lose its edge quickly unless it's so hard that it chips.

    Gideonstactical, they also make an SCHF9N that has 8Cr13MoV steel and I was wondering what the pros and cons are to that steel in comparison to 1095, so as to decide which knife to purchase.

    gideonstactical Thanks for the heads up. I was of the mindset that due to the 13% Chromium content, the blade would not only be more corrosion-resistant, but that it would also be stronger(www.spyderco.com/edge-u-cation/index.php?item=3).

    1:46 in, you mentioned it’s harder to sharpen than a Becker and does not hold an edge as long. 3:26 in you mentioned it’s not bad to sharpen to put an edge on so my question is it due to the difference in heat treat Becker being better than the 1095 SCHF9 steel or would it be because of the recurve when sharpening? Or the overall differences in the two company’s heat treat?

  • @gideonstactical

    @gideonstactical

    T&B Kuntry Strong I have found that the BK2 will hold its edge longer and resharpen easier. It is because of the heat treat.

    I concur it's a beast, although I am not so picky about sheaths since I see that as replaceable and the quality of the knife comes first. Not like the companies give us a choice anyway, so we have to deal with it. Again, the point has been made that if one can afford a "better" knife it's logical to buy quality, but a bargain blade allows buyers an affordable tool and possibly an extra one. Redundancy and backups are one of the survival priorities in planning for a crisis. As usual, very through review.

    SCHF9 works great. The SCHF37 has a longer blade, so you could baton wider logs with it, but what type of grind does the SCHF37 haveand how wide is it? The SCHF9 has a saber grind which is ideal for batoning. You also have to ask what other tasks you will be performing with it. For example the SCHF9 has a nice re-curve belly which makes it great for chopping whereas the SCHF37 is a straight blade.

    I can fit a small bic lighter and small SAK classic in the handle. If you're going to carry antibiotic (which is a very smart idea), get the micro bottles of Tabasco, make some chilli, empty the hot sauce into your chilli, and clean the bottle and add IODINE to it. You can use that for cleaning wounds, purifying water, or taken internally to lessen radiation exposure, etc. (The bic lighters last only for a few years in storage before corroding to unusable condition, fyi. So, i need to find a better substitute, I know.)

I agree about the 1095 over the chinese stainless and for the price point you just can't go wrong. Looks like I better buy one before Schrade phases this model out. I've seen a few of their new knives coming out. The ones they call bushcraft knives look like they have a hollow grind which doesn't fit the bill in my opinion. Hopefully I'm wrong and they have scandi or flat grinds. At least I think are better for carving and bushcraft tasks anyway.

    Kudos on mentioning that.... The "9" is 1095 High Carbon with a Sabre-grind... While the "9N" is 8Cr13MoV High Carbon Stainless with a Hollow-grind... Many reviews of this knife, mention the same thing... the palm-swells on the handle slabs are too big!... Perhaps Schrade could offer a "grip kit" in various sizes?... Also, if the grip slabs didn't interfere with the spine gimping on the handle! Just an idea!

    I like mine just fine, although I still plan on a BK-9. You certainly can't beat the price for a knife of it's capabilities. Schrade is making a major screw up with the new Chinese version, would never touch a knife for survival that isn't 1095 or O-1 steel.

  • @rainbowhiker

    I don't know if anyone has broken the Schf9N doing normal tasks. If they have, please let me know and reference the video of them doing so. Throwing, stabbing and prying are not normal tasks. PREPAREDMIND101 did a pretty extensive test doing stupid things no one would ever do to their own cared for knife and the f9N did not break or bend. To believe your claim you're going to need to film your claims and show that the steel is not good or heat treated properly. This knife is on my short list to buy, the f9 version only because of the saber grind. The f9N has a hollow grind witch I'd rather not have in this particular blade even though it may chop better. Still, good video and hope you have more on these blades in the future.

But Schrade and I parted ways in 2019 after the new owners wouldn't quit withholding my royalties and wouldn't stop trying to talk me into having my knives made in China instead of Taiwan. They repeatedly breached I have no further use for the company and have told them so, among other things. So the entire Griffin Design line has been discontinued.
