Hi Michelle I’m really sorry to hear about your horrific experiences before you went on meds. I have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. I was diagnosed with schizophrenia when I was in a psychiatric unit for four months in 2011, but it didn’t stick. My inner critic causes me to have social anxiety too. Whether it’s there or not is dependent on my mood. When I’m elevated, my inner critic turns into my inner number one fan. It gives me constant positive feedback and boosts my confidence - causing me to become more and more grandiose. When I’m depressed it constantly tells me I’m a lazy, useless pack of shit. I believe it and can’t motivate myself to do anything - including shower, clean my teeth or prepare food. I haven’t had a job for 13 years. When I’m at a public gathering with people I don’t know, my thoughts waiver between “Don’t speak to anyone because you’ll say something stupid” and “You’d better say something because they’ll think you’re dull, or rude”. It’s paralysing. I’m glad your meds are working for you, Michelle. My mood stabilisers and an anti-depressant keep me pretty even (too even sometimes) so my thoughts about my behaviour are mixed. My worst recurring thought that can come up at anytime is “I hate you, and I’m never coming back!” Both of my parents abandoned my brother and I when I was three and-a-half. Neither of them said those exact words, but they argued on my father’s doorstep about who was going to look after us. “I don’t want them!” “Well, I don’t want them either. They’re your kids!” I concluded that they hated me and were never coming back. My mother did come back 18 months later. Throughout the rest of my childhood she was constantly berating my behaviour, unless I was “good” - in which case the criticism let up temporarily or I got a slight bit of praise. I learned through therapy that my hostile inner critic is a “broken record” playing my mother’s criticisms over and over in my mind. Please know that I’m not making any assumptions about you, but I personally reckon that harmful childhood conditioning has a lot to answer for. Love Elizabeth ❤️

Thank you so much for all of your extremely informative videos. My son was just taken by police two days ago. They took him to the ER to wait for a bed in a psychiatric facility. He was recently diagnosed with Schizophrenia and the last month and a half has been an absolute nightmare. The voices he hears has him convinced that he has "super powers" and that his father and I are out to kill him. The female Sargent asked him "Do you have any feelings of wanting to cause harm to your parents" and he said "Absolutely. They've been lying to me my entire life" what these lies are I have no idea whatsoever and he won't say what they are. He also told the police "None of you understand what's going on right now with Trump and the upcoming apocalypse, but you'll soon find out." My husband was having surgery this past Tuesday and that's when my son started blowing up my phone with text messages that called me every nasty name you can think of, while telling me he's destroying everything in the house, which he actually did. He's over the age of 18 so me, even as his mother have no rights for a hospital to tell me if he's there, though I'm still trying. It's now been 48 hours and I don't know where he is or what's going on and I'm absolutely terrified for his future, not to mention I'm also terrified of where he's ended up because I know that there's really bad psychiatric units out there who don't hesitate just doping a patient up and leaving them them sit. I really hope that's not the type of place he's currently in. I really appreciate you taking the time to do these videos because right now they're helping me tremendously ❤

Mental health care varies widely depending on insurance, whether there are good doctors available. For the most part, people with serious mental health conditions are not getting the care they need and deserve. You are an example of someone diagnosed with a schizophrenia who has received good quality mental health care. I've learned more from you and other mental health care advocates than from local professionals. Seriously, where are they? It's totally grassroots. I think you and other advocates should talk freely about the medicines that work for you. Most of the health care practicioners I've met think that just getting someone stable is a success. I know schizophrenia is a spectrum condition and recovery can be different for each individual, but we are back ass backwards in mental health care.

Hey Michelle! I have a question: - do you typically have an internal monologue/hear an internal voice? - if so, how distinct was this voice from your normal internal voice? Asking because the things the voice said to you are definitely thoughts I intrusively have sometimes. When I’m feeling socially anxious, it can feel like a constant running audit of my behaviors and everything I say - like a constant “devil’s advocate.” They’re not in line with what I want or truly think, yet it doesn’t necessarily feel like somebody else separate from me. And then with work, it leans more towards the “wow, all the managers are in a meeting together? They’re talking about me/you. They know what a bad employee you are.” “Oops, I computer glitch! …they installed new software without your knowledge and are monitoring your every move.” I imagine it’s a spectrum and that intrusive voices are similar to intrusive thoughts. However, I’m struggling to figure out the difference!
