Weird and interesting thing just happened, I'm in the North of England and yesterday at 8am a SKY van man jumped out of his van and rang my doorbell, I've never had anything to do with Sky, I didn't open the door as I already have internet etc and my TV's are all boxed up and I don't even watch the BBC on iPlayer (it's trash). I could see him via the doorbell camera in real time and the video footage is stored. I could see a black 'car speed test style' gun in his hand and he had a tablet; I noticed that he was looking up at my top windows, he had the SKY logo on his sweater. Question is: Is Capita who are contracted to do the TV licensing using SKY engineers etc to conduct TV license spot checks or are SKY doing this under their own steam to grass people up for commission to the BBC ?

Never pay them again, I love Not Paying Them, Love how frustrated they must get when anything they say and do mean Nothing to me

They called on me, I asked them do they have a pilots licence and then lectured them about the trouble that they could get into by flying an aeroplane without a licence. I also asked them if they have a driving lience, and if their vehicle was insured for business usage. I then told them, in a manner of speaking to go away and not come back. I know I was just supposed to shut the door in their face, but I felt like having a laugh.

Check that you are not owed a refund , Direct Debit can be up to 6 months in advance , on the TV license website is an option to check if you owed , I got just short of £70 in less than a week after claim ,

The letter that really got my back up was the one that said "Pay us what you owe us", for not having a licence. Cheeky basts.

How does anyone owe them if they are following the law, if you are not watching BBC (including iPlayer) or any Live programs on Broadcast TV or Streaming services that are TV companies (Including the likes of Netflix and Amazon) including from overseas. Then you are not committing an offence so you don't owe them a penny. Their letters clearly make a false statement and are threatening and intimidating and cause some people distress so in my opinion based on my understanding of The Malicious Communications Act 1988 it's actually an offence for the public to send but seems ok for the BBC. Oh the hypocrisy of British law.

I wrote to TVL demanding a physical address or email address of the person signing the letters so I could serve them with papers for stalking, threatening behaviour etc. The reply I got was priceless. They basically said it was just a fake, "Finally, although names appear at the bottom of the letters, they have not personally sent it to you, as TV Licensing takes collective responsibility for the letters we send". I should begin by explaining that a TV Licence is a legal permission to watch or record any television programmes (on any channel, on any device) as they're being shown and to watch or download programmes from BBC iPlayer. This includes all free to air channels, such as BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, channels received via a subscription satellite or cable service, for example Sky or Virgin Media, channels received from outside the UK as they're broadcast and channels viewed online at the same time as they're being broadcast by other means. I should advise that TV Licensing write to all unlicensed addresses where the situation is not known. We have a right to undertake lawful and proportionate enquires under our duty to investigate conferred by the BBC Royal Charter and Part 4 of the Communications Act 2003. The letters we send to unlicensed properties will provide the occupier with the information they need to buy, renew or declare that a licence is not required. We have a duty to ensure that all addresses in the UK where TV is used are appropriately licensed. Our letters must be of necessity be balanced to recognise that there may be good reasons why a person does not have a licence, while being sufficiently strong to deter evaders. TV Licensing send thousands of letters each week and deal with over 26 million licences each year therefore unfortunately we would not be able to check every property before a letter is sent. The use of television receiving equipment for this purpose without a valid licence is an offence. For this reason, the enquiry letters sent carry a message regarding the potential consequences of unlicensed use. The aim of these letters is to inform the recipient that the address is unlicensed and advise of the consequences of any unlicensed use. If we do not receive a response, the message will become progressively stronger as we have found from experience that a stronger message can encourage a reply. Whilst recipients are not obligated to respond it is helpful if they do so as this enables us to minimise contact with people who genuinely do not require a licence. If we are notified that a licence is not required we can stop correspondence for a period of time. TV Licensing do not permanently stop writing to addresses as the occupier or circumstances may change over time. TV Licensing does not presume that anyone is committing an offence and the letters have no implication for those who don’t require a TV Licence. However, a robust message needs to be communicated to persons evading the payment of the licence fee. We’ll continue to make enquiries to addresses on our records where there’s no valid licence and where we’ve not been told that a licence isn’t needed. Without knowing the circumstances at the address we’d be unable to stop our enquiries. It is not our intention to harass or annoy, but to clarify the licensing requirements at that address at that time. Having said this, we feel we would be failing in our duty if the enquiry letter did not contain a message to those who might be using a television without a licence, of the consequences of continuing to do so. In regards to your comments about the wording of our letters, I should explain that we produce our letters with guidance and approval from the Licensing Authority (BBC) and its marketing agent. I appreciate that the letters refer to the possibility of a visit from a TV Licensing officer or possible action, though I should explain that this is a general explanation of what could happen if someone is found using a TV receiver without a TV Licence. We do however welcome feedback received from customers relating to the content of our letters. Finally, although names appear at the bottom of the letters, they have not personally sent it to you, as TV Licensing takes collective responsibility for the letters we send. I am retired and bored, so I do a "Return to Sender". The Post box is at the top of my street.

I have today finally cancelled my TV Licence. I have been watching your channel from at least October and bought a Fire Stick. I hardly ever watched broadcast TV before October, but did record a few programmes but was going to have to buy a new recorder, as it was packing up, but as you say you can watch almost all I did before on free steaming (not Iplayer) KZread even programmes I did watch on BBC I have found better alternatives. I moved out of the UK for work - I had Sky Q so had to have a license. The best feeling was cancelling my TV license and I won’t be getting one when I move back - I was paying all that money for Sky and I watched maybe *ONE* programme on the BBC!

You said the letter was sent in December, the red ink is obviously seasonally festive. 😂😂😂

Got my 14th letter of the year on 23rd December 2022. Identical to this, Visit scheduled. RECEIVED, my 1st letter, THE BIG RED SCARRY ONE, HA!! This morning' 10th January 2023. How is this amount of intimidation allowed? I SEND 1 LETTER TO ANYBODY WORDED AS THESE ARE AND I AM, APPARENTLY, BREAKING THE LAW.

I cancelled my TV licence 4 years ago via the TV licence website. I had a visit about 2 years ago from a man from TV licensing ..... I listened to the 'old toffee' knowing that his objective was to gain entry to my property to which he had NO chance! I decided to play along answering 'yes' & 'no' to the various questions (that he read to me from a proforma) He then said "All that remains for me to do is just check your tv" I simply replied that it wasn't convenient for him to do that at the moment but if he wanted to make an appointment to return at some date in the future I'd be happy to do that for him (smirk.) He went away chuntering words to the effect of 'I'll be back" I think he thought he was some sort of Arnie character lol 😂 Needless to say to date I've heard absolutely nothing else from them. I'd just add that another method of antagonising TV licencing is, if you recieve a letter from them (I'm assuming that the envelope is marked 'TV licensing') Don't open the letter. Instead write on the envelope 'Not at this address please return to sender' & post it back to them. Do this and then they have to pay the postage! Kerr-Ching ha ha

"All that remains for me to do is just check your tv" -- and what is he looking for ?? An aerial going into the back of the TV ?? If that's the case when the door bell rings all you need do is disconnect the aerial. Or give an excuse to make him wait a minute or so while you remove the aerial lead and coil it back. In any case having an aerial lead go in your TV in itself is not an offence. The 'offence' is actually having the TV switched on and watching broadcast programmes on it and how can he prove you've been doing that without being there at the time in person?? You could be watching catchup TV or youtube having simply forgotten to remove the aerial lead.

I agree, if you are a vulnerable person receiving that letter then it maybe enough to scare you. Those letters should be worded differently.

You could issue them with an invoice but I think it highly unlikely they would pay it. And what would you do to enforce it? Take them to the County Court? Not a chance. Isn't going to happen. So what's the point of 'charging' them if you know they are not going to pay it, and you are not going to try to enforce it through the courts? It's just a waste of your time with zero gain. Aka, POINTLESS.

My address was scheduled for a visit 4 years ago, 3 yrs ago and last year. They must have bad memories, don't they remember that I've been under investigation for years? Maybe we should caution them for driving without suitable car insurance.

The thing is when you apply for a licence they automatically take the payment as far back as they can sometimes the full year that was missed or more 😱

I got the 10 day calendar letter last month, so I'm expecting this letter, any day now.

Ive had the letter telling me Im gettingb a visit. thanks for your vidio it helps me to keep a positive mind about it all. they do tend to scare you and play on your mind these letters

Your own fear is your worse enemy. Nothing to be feared of. Use your heads and don't pay and don't speak to them and ignore them. The only way you loose to them is talking to them and letting them in your homes. Close the door and ignore there words of nonsense. Let them waste their time and money and laugh and enjoy life. 😉 😁 keep smiling and remember you don't have to do anything they tell you. Silence is golden.

I got an 'Investigation opened' letter this morning from the 'Enforcement Division'. The first words in the letter are 'This is an official warning'. Load of bollocks, every letter goes in the bin. I legally do not require a TV license and these letters should be illegal, they are very threatening and malicious communications.

They have escalated my case now approx 20 times an am waiting for 1 to turn up so I can give them back all these letters .

Should you legally have a licence? If you've not had a licence (not 'license) for 6 years, sounds like you don't need one, so what's the problem? Or are you breaking the law?

What a shame I'm hardly ever in and when I am in I don't answer the door unless I know someone is coming to the house. They can jog on!

I don't find too much issue with the letter other than the claim they can interview you under caution in accordance with criminal law. That is a flat out lie. They have zero powers of arrest other than those of a citizen's arrest which we all have, and to call those powers is a stretch. A citizen's arrest is incredibly restrictive and conditional. Only the police can arrest you and interview you under caution. In fact, I believe they may well be breaking the law themselves by impersonating law enforcement officers with that statement. I wonder whether we can get Mr. BlackBeltBarrister to see this and know for certain whether any laws are being broken.

They can , under authority of the communication act and PACE ,interview under caution , an arrest is not required to caution , Many have the power to interview under caution , local government , HMRC , Defra and more , You however have the most important power , the power to refuse , the following is from Licensing questions, A TV Licensing Enforcement Officer must verbally caution you that anything you say to them may be used in evidence against you in court. If you have not been cautioned, any evidence gathered from that visit may be inadmissible in court.

I love getting these letters now that winter is in full swing as it affords me a few moments of warmth as it burns.. Wish they were bigger or more frequently sent out then I could get warm more often.... What a bunch of muppets they all seem to be, I am looking forward to a visit some time soon, no wait!! I have been having these letters saying just this for over 10yrs and no one has called to see me.............

Dont forget you can only opt out for two years before it all starts over again. Lets be honest those letters are aimed at the old folk mainly and not people who watch youtube videos. It borders on elder abuse.

They are, but even older people are wising up and realising that the BBC is only interested in providing programming for youth (who don't watch their stuff anyway), and appealing to minority groups (many of whom have never paid for a TV licence). I have two homes, so I get 25 letters a year, all of which are ignored.

Here's another point about enforcement or investigation officers. Ask to see their ID card, it doesn't mention enforcement or investigation officers, just says visiting officer. Refuse to speak to them & insist on speaking with investigation officers only.

They are investigation officers. Don't get confused with what their badges say or not say. That's not important. It's a poor and disingenuous excuse not to speak to them. The fact is, you have the right not to speak to them anyway, you don't need to provide some fake excuse. However, they do have the right to get a search warrant and gain entry to your property against your wish.

Much of what TVL writes & does is based on deceit & imo needs to be called out. Most folks may prefer to just close their doors, whilst others choose to challenge & or record these goons, in order to expose their tactics & abuse. PS TVL don't have any rights to get a warrant to access any property, they only have the ability to apply for a warrant, providing that TVL can show evidence to a judge that watching tv illegally is likely taking place.

@@mikehipperson The morale of the story is, say nothing to them. They then have no grounds for a search warrant on nothing said. They are trying to catch you out by getting you to engage with them in hopes you say something that they can use as a reason the get a warrant. They can't get a warrant on a slammed door in their face.

@@deang5622 to get a search warrant signed they need to present evidence, not just hearsay. It's got to be more than an opinion. Of course they could lie but that would not be a good idea, as perjury could really come back and bite them in the arse.

I had to laugh, I was getting the usual red letter from the licence parasites but just before Xmas they thought they'd be clever by sending a gold envelope with no TV licensing on the front as I'd not responded to any of their letter in the past they obviously thought that I would think being a fancy gold envelope with no hint it was the license scroungers I'd open it believing it was a Xmas card but I saw straight through their little stunt an can only say... Thank you bbc for giving me a right good laugh around Xmas time an it was so kind an thoughtful of them to waste money on me hahaha

How much money have they wasted sending these pointless letters, I live in a village and they are supposedly sending an "enforcement officer" from 1.5 hours away. It's a joke and I love the letters turning up.

I don’t know how common things like “Ring” doorbells are in the UK? I’ve got one and it records video & sound, which can be used as evidence against them. They also come with a warning sticker, so they have a reasonable knowledge they are being recorded (and can therefore be used as evidence against them).

Not paid for a TV licence for 3 years never will every letter I receive goes straight in the bin I've had one visit the second word was off and shut the door nuff said

Hilarious take on it Jon, 10 /10 for this, your updates needed, I don't even read them, can alway tell their mail, it goes letter box, bin, letter box, bin not had a visit for months!!! Why not make it your New Year’s resolution to not pay the licence, the letters will probably come monthly along with the other junk stuff. Put it through the shredder and forget about it all, maybe make a cup of tea afterwards and carry on with your day. If by miracle the goons turn up, politely say “ no thank you” and close the door, they will have to walk away empty handed and a bit poorer. Don’t be afraid of them.

I'm not sure if I ever got one of those. Any letter in my letterbox with reference to tv tax goes straight in the recycler unopened.

Also, they are wanting to put the price of a licence up with the price of inflation, So that's £246. Lol yeah glad I'm licence free and have been for over 10 years. Never had a visit and just fill the no licence needed declaration online. No letters and no hassle.

I've never ever owned a TV, nor of course a licence - after 5 years at my 'new' home, these crass letters seems to have stopped...

Imagine the millions (if not billions) of paper, energy and resources wasted in sending out useless letters. Aren't we trying to be eco friendly and carbon neutral? Not to mention a waste of tax payers hard earned money when it could be contributed towards better things, things such as; NHS, free cost of higher learning, towards work and housing for the homeless and unemployed, self reliance on energy and food, etc. The list can go on and on. Our government is not thinking clearly of what truly is important.

I've had a look at the doorbells mate. Not sure if I can have one as I live in a flat and I don't want to upset the family that lives opposite. I've still got my phone if it comes to it, but I don't think I'll let them in to the stairwell anyway. ;) Keep it up mate. People need to know that they have nothing to fear from the goons.

Don't be silly. If it was illegal somebody would have taken the Licensing Agency/Capita to Court and won and that has not happened. Your saying it is illegal does not make it so.

If I say "thanks but no thanks" and shut the door they will automatically think "What's he trying to hide", and continue to pester me. I don't watch TV and haven't for some years. I watch DVDs and that's all. However, if I invite them in and show them that I do have a set, but it isn't connected to anything other than a DVD player, and that there is no aerial on the roof or inside, then they have the proof. That should be that and they will leave me alone. Unless anyone can tell me why being honest isn't the best policy?

Why bother ffs.

Virtually every time i turned on BBC’s radio four all i would usually hear is an American accent and some woman telling me how racist, transphobic and homophobic i am. Well i really don’t need them to tell me that. Can’t they find jobs in America ? Why out of all the millions of English people do we have to give all the jobs to people like the German generals granddaughter ? There’s no news except for the views of their fews and their relatives so why should i pay for that ? They don’t speak for me, nor to me, they only speak down to me. When every news person from the uk to Europe and the USA happens to just have that mittle European name i call it sectarian nepotism, and if Dumbleby and his bro and pa don’t like it so what, of course they won’t admit it. They hold employees’ bring your kids to work at the BBC for the rest of their lives day at the BBC and they wouldn’t employ me, i don’t need to apply. I don’t know of any businesses that are government owned or associated that practice such nepotism except for the New Liarbar party with their hereditary seats in the “house of commons”.

By the way, I decided not to do another no licence needed declaration and, when I start getting these letters again, I wonder if they'll be addressing me as the "legal occupier" instead of using my name.

2 months ago I had a letter in a long white envelope from them and yesterday I had one in a large brown one. They try all ways to make me respond lol

Why recycle just write 'Not Known At This Address' cross out the occupier and put back in the post box, if it does not have my name I am not interested. They can get my name off the Electrol register, but their investigation can't even do that. Or as it's free paper it could be used as toilet paper.

My latest letter says I have now been issued with a code against me, what does this even mean?

"If your property needs a TV Licence, you will still need to buy one." Surely, if you've been convicted, then it does need a licence, so why the IF?

The goons will have a problem knocking on my door, I haven’t got a knocker or a bell.

I read that the TV licence could go up with inflation to just over £200! Good luck with that one. I'm not effected but the folk who are still paying it and are thinking about stopping will definitely pack it in then!

My no licence needed expired recently. I had 3 letters addressed to me then the last two are now to the present occupier so they apparently have no idea who lives here. Apparently they are going to visit

Of course they know who lives there. They check the electoral roll register. What they are doing is removing your name in case you have moved on, and the letter addressed to "The Occupier' should be opened by anybody living at that address. If the letter is not responded to in anyway, then they can be confident that the person there is trying to evade paying the license fee. And they can then decide to escalate to a visit.

The description TV License contravenes the Trades Description Act as it is now no longer compulsory to have a TV License to watch TV. It needs renaming to what it's actually for, a "license to watch Live Broadcast TV and BBC iplayer."

I would think "Just a minute" (and no action) would be more annoying for them than "No thanks".

It’s about time every householder that does not want or pay for a tv licence to start taking all letters to their local police station and demand an investigation into threatening letters being sent to your address. Surely their will be at least one police officer and their superiors that will take this further. I know I’m going to start doing this as soon as I sell my house and move again. In the meantime I’m waiting very patiently for one of the local tv goons to come visit me so I can give them a right ear bashing, I ain’t scared of anyone especially some stupid salesman that dares come to my door demanded monies by menace and threat. I know everyone and yourself included say never to engage with them, but I know I do not need a licence and I will certainly be engaging with whatever salesman dares come to my door from tv licensing. Once I do move I’m going totally off grid and should one of their salesman appear at that address they may wish they never had.
