    This reminds me of when I rebuilt the oil pump on my Triumph 2000 CNC. As far as I could tell the pump had never had a ball installed in the foot valve. On the up stroke it sucked oil out of the tank then on the down stroke pushed it back into the tank. The machine spent most of it's life with no lubrication. The previous owner wasn't even aware it had an oil pump! I dropped in a ball in there so it now pumps but it's a bit late now. The machine has rather more bed wear that I'd like.

  • @RotarySMP

    @RotarySMP

    3 жыл бұрын

    Ouch. I think this pump probably still worked, but the lube oil level was below the pump inlet. At least the lathe has little to no wear. Seeing as the Z ball screw end bearings were solid from hardened coolant, this machine hasn't moved in a couple of decades probably.

    Place a sacrificial filter (a UV filter is a good choice) on the lens all the time, let it take the abuse. When it gets schmooed up, a couple of bucks gets you a new one.

    Peiro - thanks for taking care of all us with OCD 😉. RSMP - What an awesome set of generous gifts from your viewers. Liked the tip of using PVC pipe to support the oil tank in the sonic tank. You didn’t note it, but were you satisfied with the performance of the citric cleaner? Do you think it might have worked differently if you loaded the oil tank upside-down in the sonic tank. I’m wondering if the sonic action was somewhat isolated by the thick walls of the oil tank? How long did you run the sonic tank? 👍👍😎👍👍

  • @RotarySMP

    I probably had the citrix cleaner too dilute, but did a bit of extra powdered citrix after the first 20 minutes buzzing. I think in total I did 60 minutes of sonic. It took off most of the oil base gunk, but didn't come out perfect. I did it upside down.

    Thanks. I looked at a lot of reviews, and comparisons, and everything pointed to that Panasonic G80 (G81 or G85 depending on country) being the best price, performance and interface compromise. I got it used for about half price, and am really happy with it. Dont underestimate how important a logical interface is. When videoing a hundred clips a week, a poor interface (like the Olympus EM-10 I had before) really drives you nuts. The G80 also has a couple cool features, like you can easily set it up to move the 1080P crop around during a take, so you get that slider like effect on the opening shot this week.

    @@RotarySMP With caustic you might not need to put it in the ultrasonic, just a container and let it sit for a while. I have the same blasting cabinet (albeit in red). I find the silly little air filter gets clogged within a few minutes of use, and the lid is so flimsy it hardly seals at all. I made a frame out of square section tube that goes around the edge of the acrylic window with some over-centre latches to pull it down. The lip that the window seals onto required a lot of attention to get it flat, it was all over the place. It could really do with a proper vacuum extraction, but I removed the poxy air filter and replaced it with PVC waste pipe that goes straight up about a meter, then a U bend and over the end of the U bend I have a vacuum cleaner bag held on with an elastic band. The longish vertical section helps larger particles fall back into the cabinet, and the vacuum cleaner bag provides loads of airflow and makes disposal of the finer dust easier. I also find I have to keep shaking the cabinet to get the media in the sump to level out so the vacuum hose can pick it up, it tends to suck out a crater in the middle and stop working.

    I'm pretty sure bronze is ok in caustic, it's alum that is a problem. We used to hot tank 1000s of CI engine blocks in caustic, and I remember they had bronze bushes or restrictors. If you put something in caustic and it starts bubbling after a few min pull it out, because something is getting eaten. We also had carbon remover tanks for alum heads - I think it was methylene chloride but my memory is bad - and it would strip everything without damage, even plastic. I think chlorides aren't recommended for Ti. There is internal fuel tank paint that should be ok with oil.

    is it actually really nessesery to paint the inside of an practically oil filled container? even if it's done with two-K paint. my experience is that it will come of eventually still, and clog up the lines. even making it worse. i mean would it really rot when keeping up the oil level.

    I think castings which are supposed to hold fluids are normally painted on the inside to ensure it doesn't seep due to porosity. But am not sure about that. The upper half of the tank will never see oil, but you may weel be right that it is unnessary to paint it.

    I remember rebuilding some German gearboxes and all the castings were spray puttied and then two pack painted. The resulting finish was silky smooth, and easy to clean...

    @@RotarySMP maybe it's better to ignore what i just said. i dont want to ruin your project. you may well be right about CASTINGS. and paint the inside. because what Craig sounds reasonable too. be sure to use good 2k stuff as you already mentioned. For the inside of cooling fluid containers i dont even bougther to paint them ever again. but those are made of steel plate most of the time. all this flake paint, yuck.

    Too bad aero engineers have forgotten how to have a 100 gallon tank of oil in the wing root like they did with the radial-engine beasts back in the day!

    True. The GE90 oil consumption is considered high at about 1/2 quart or liter per hour. The big radials guzzlered gallons per hour of oil.
