What do u do if your gsd has low self esteem

Thank you so much for this series, Nate! I have an 11mo siberian husky with a lot of brains and drive to work. We started indoors with buckets and blocks and she investigated the holes all on her own on day one, went for treats inside on day 2. A week later she's searching on command and skipping past all the empty containers and heading straight for the odor! I also noticed she's far more scent aware now, using her nose constantly when on walks now. She's still not doing much with fetch and balls (seperate training still needed there) but a K9 officer suggested a different field training - place the odor in a different object (I used a paper towel roll) somewhere along an outdoor walk route and just see if she picks up the scent cone without being queued and does the behavior on her own. Day one with that and she NAILED IT! Big reward, pile of high reward treats just dropped on the ground for her for that! I plan to utilize this skill in our performance art shows, with magic tricks, and to help find my Frisbee golf discs lost in the woods. Thanks so much for sharing all of these techniques for free to all of us. Invaluable ❤️

Another great video nate! Can't wait to watch the search and rescue series. Quick question in the scent detection fetching episode you talked about how having a dog with high perseverance is helpful. Is there anything that you can look for or test to see if a pup has a naturally high perseverance?

Yes, put a toy in a place that your dog can see, but can't get to it. You want to see how long the dog will try to get the toy before the dog gives up. You can also do this with food. For the toy, I will usually put it under something that makes it impossible for the dog to get to it, such as a couch or a table that is upside down with the flat part of the table on the ball. A dog with high perseverance will not give up easily. :)

Thanks again. This indirectly answered a couple of questions I had. I think that the reason you used blocks first is because it is hard for them to move around. Haha. I learned this because I started with cardboard boxes and the first thing she did was bring them to me. She was confused 🤔 It was fun and we made it work.

Lol! That's a great point. Some of the lighter objects the dogs can move around and the cinder blocks prevent this from happening. You can also attach the buckets to a wood board base to help prevent it from moving as easily or falling over.

0:58 if by some weird quirk putting a treat inside does not work then I would suggest to teach your dog the "boop it" command. It would help your dog get used to sticking their nose in things. I have a video on how to teach that. Then you can just use your hand to stick her nose in the container though your hand. Then when your dog does that regularly then proceed to just pointing at the container and saying boop it. Then once you got your dog actually sticking your nose in the container when you just point at it then you can change the word from boop it to search. Or you can just start call the boop it , search from the start.

You’re saving us so much money and giving us fun activities to do with our dogs that make us both happy😂 I’m super excited to train my dog to track scent watched a lot of cops growing up so it’ll be cool to have a dog of my own do this it’s really gonna bring the kid in me out again haha. Oh also I do have a question so when you throw the ball and tell your dog search is that specifically for this exercise only? When I’m just playing with my dog do I still have to say it or just go about it normally??? And what are your thoughts on rough housing with the dogs? I’m trying to seriously train my new Mali and I don’t wanna screw things up it’s not gonna be perfect cause I’ve never really done any advanced training I’ve only done basic obedience it’s okay if it’s not perfect I just wanna do the best job possible I just know my East ddr German Shepherd I had years ago loved playing rough is that bad to do if I’m trying to really train it the best I can? Thanks, Spencer! I appreciate that, and I'm happy the videos are helping. Yes, throwing the ball and saying search is primarily for the field search training. When playing normal fetch, you can just throw the ball and have your dog retrieve it like normal. Roughhousing with dogs is completely fine! I do it with my dogs all the time. Just like a dog being on the furniture, it's okay as long as it's okay with you. As my friend Bethany says, "It's not a problem unless it's a problem." I've personally never had any issues with it, and it's a great way to bond with your dog. Cheers!

@@NateSchoemer Yessirrr much appreciated brother, I was just a little concerned with that my working line German Shepherd lived to gently bite me guess it didn’t help he was also the alpha male😂 And as a puppy my arms would be covered in red because he had those wicked sharp puppy teeth. Just wanted to make sure cause I think someone told me it’s bad for behavior or something to that extent but yeah I definitely enjoy doing that here and there. What kind of scent is the best to use for this training and also how strong does it need to be. Do you change the scent all the time?

Ohhh! This clarifies Lesson 2 so much! I was pretty confused about why we were suddenly playing fetch... So, since this is more about building a positive association with the odor, could I just put the scent on a tug toy (pretty much the only toy he's interested in), and then just play tug with him for a while? In regards to the last question, you make it sound pretty easy to introduce different odors in the future, which sounds good. We're using a geranium scent because it was the only essential oil I could find in our house (lol) but the smell of geranium, I assume, doesn't really have any practical real-life application. Granted, we're just doing this because it's fun, but are there any scents that have more of a practical application than flowers? ha! Anyways, thanks for the Q&A! That cleared a lot of things up!

Yes, you can place the odor on a tug toy, just be sure to wash the odor off when you are done playing or keep that toy in an airtight container between use. If you want to use a more practical odor, then you can order scent kits online. They have scent kits for hunting, bomb detection, pseudo drugs, and cadaver. 😁🙏🐶🐕

Hey Nate great video series! Just one question, as a hobbiest dog trainer, what scents would you recommend training my dogs with? I know their smell is incredible so I wouldn't want to overwhelm them with a very strong odour, but I also want something that is readily available at home and not harmful to the dog. Cheers

Thanks! I was using Lavender with Arih. According to my google research, lavender is a safe option for scent detection training. Just don't have your dog come in direct contact with the oil. Meaning, don't allow them to lick the oil. Have the scent in a small container with holes in it to release the odor.

Just for you to help and make your dog interested in tennis ball you do the decoy agitation with the sleeve and tugs by yourself... for me it’s fun but with the chain you used and it’s to short it’s not safe for them and limit their chance to play... easiest way to help them build interest is put the tennis ball inside the sock and do the play (tossing, tugging, trowing, bouncing) in a grassy areas with happy and short sessions.. and using only with your bare hands trowing it... and teaching the dog to search or be a detection dog, it’s not always the best idea to teach them first the obedience training then followed by the scent or detection training.. it limits their chance of learning and progression unless you have a very tough and quality pup or dog... just my personal opinion... thank you for sharing you knowledge and videos

Yes. overtime that would teach your dog to look for food when you say search.

If you use a specific scent e.g vanilla will the dog only search for that scent? How would you teach a dog to search for recent human scent, such as when police dogs search for people or items recently discarded?

Do you train your dogs with a specific odour that you use in work, like drugs, explosives etc. or it can be a simple thing like a vanilla flavor? Yes, you can use something like vanilla. I was using lavender, but you can also buy scent kits online for nose work training. If you use any oils, just use one drop and don't put it in a location that the dog can lick the actual oil. Use a container with a cotton ball for the odor. If you want to put the odor on a toy, then put on drop on the inside of a lid container and keep the toy in the container overnight. This way the toy will hold the odor, but the oil wont be directly on the toy. I hope this helps! Cheers!

One more question... Once I teach my dog multiple odors(Birch, anise, clove or whatever), will he be able to indicate on a chosen one of those or will he indicate for all of them without discrimination? Say i had tennis balls with each 3 odors sitting next to each other. How would i show him Birch and have him avoid anise and clove?

If you taught all odors, then more likely than not he'll indicate when he smells any of them. You can try to put each odor on their own command, but they may be difficult. Cheers!

Hi! Very good videos 😊 A different approach than I use, so very interesting. I just have one question. You mention learning multiple odors at once. I have heard people do this, but research shows that dogs can favor one oder and pretty much ignore the others. It also states that it is not entirely true that they can seperate five different odors. That for example ABC is not always A + B + C, but some times equals F. A completely different odor. What is your take on this?

Thanks for the comment. I've always taught one odor at a time. I would have to train a few dogs using the multiple odors at once technique to give proper feedback.

Heyy i havw a question that is bothering me that you are using the word " search" cue , did you use the word search instead of fetch?? ,because i learned mu og the cue fetch in french" cherche" and i use this cue for 2 things while playing and throuwing a ball and when im playing hide and seek with her when hiding something and than i say the word fetch and she start searching and even in the hunting field i use the same word and its working in these 3 situations, is it right ?? Because from.my own experience using the same word such "fetch" to retrieve the toy that i just throw and while playing hide and seek use the same word , is it wronf..

You can use whatever words that you like. Also, dogs are very situational, so that makes sense that you could use one command for three different behaviors. Either way is fine, it just comes down to personal preference and what works best for you and your dog. Cheers!

Do you ever progress to allowing the dog to find it without you showing the dog exactly what to do and where it is? I love how you introduce everything, but I never saw any functionality behind it. It seems you never get to the point where the dog is the one doing the work. What would your next step be as far as getting the dog to find and retrieve (assuming you've done formal retrieval work as well) without any direction from you (ideally off leash, hiding the scent where the dog can't see and without any distracting reward as far as food)?

Do you Only have Malinois? What are your reasons to choose a dog breed? What do you suggest one look for in a puppy to know it will have a stable and safe mind but at same time have high prey drive and can get sharp instantly but then relax when you ask him pr her to back out!? Can one understand this in seeing the puppies before choosing the right one!? and if so, at what weeks of the puppies lives will this become visible enough to know you make the right choice? thanks for a super great channel!

Thanks, Chris! I appreciate the kind words! I have a Malinois and a British fox red lab. However, I have trained hundreds of dogs of all different breeds in my 8 years of professional dog training. If you want a dog for a specific purpose, then google search breeds that you are interested in and see if that dog has the characteristics that you are looking for. Then when you speak with different breeders, tell them what your goals are and they will let you know if they have any dogs that will fit your needs. Just be sure they have done all the proper health test before they had the litter. hi Nate, for the dowel retrieval, on the other dowels that doesnt have your scent but are tied, wouldnt the stings be the thing that will hint the dog not to take those dowels instead of picking up on your scent on the correct dowel?

Yes, that's possible, but from my experience they usually don't pay attention to the rope. However, if they do, then you would need something they couldn't see. Other trainers have glued the unscented dowels down. I used the rope and it worked for me. Cheers! :)

Great videos! I would like to teach my border collies to sniff out illegal fishing nets which are often hidden near rivers. How can I introduce the scent? Place tennis balls in a container with pieces of different nets?

My dog runs to the ball, gets it but doesn't bring it to me?!
